Just watering your plants isn't enough. Definitely not for Roses! Rose plants need a lot of tender love and care. There are tons of tips on how to take care of your rose plants. Feeding the plants with the right nutrition is one of them. In this video, I tell you the tips on what to feed rose plants, when to feed rose and how to feed your rose plants.
Basal cane refers to new growth that emerges directly from the bud union (graft) or the plant's base. They are the thickest and most vigorous section of the rose, growing to the full height of the plant. There could be two, three, or even more than that.
The main canes are the structural, supporting, part of the climbing rose, and the laterals grow off of them.
Don't confuse basal canes with suckers. Suckers are growth from the rootstock (below the graft) that needs to be eliminated. Basal canes are often fat, while suckers are typically thin. Suckers are undesirable because they grow quickly and may dominate the desirable part of the plant, causing the grafted portion to die.
So keep an eye out for the good and bad in your plants. And I hope you locate some basal canes on your roses!

Dear Geekgardener! Today I spent a lot of time online trying to find a sensible advice to try to coax my pot roses AND two struggling climbers to make healthy new basal shoots ….finally I came across your advice……. I tried so often in the past to get results, to no avail. One last try I thought after listening to what you had to say, thinking that so often a very simple solution works…… by the way: I live in a small valley in the Western Cape, South Africa, and thank you 🙏🏼 😊❤ very much!!!! Hopefully within a few weeks I can give some positive feedback!!!
