I have the flow on both of mine set constant, but I move and change the angle of one every time I clean the glass. Seems to help with cleaning certain areas and also allowing cleanup crews to go to places they may not have wanted to the week before.

Great info guys! What I haven't heard about pumps in this video is the importance of cleaning as to the amount of flow it is able to generate. Cleaning ofter means more flow in your tank and more constant flow.

Great point! Pump maintenance is crucial!

You should have a long term test. I've used Gyres, MP40QD, Jebao, and more. By far my favorite over time are the RO Octo Pulse. They have great wide spread flow, and don't slow down as much over time compared to Vortechs and Gyres.

Great video! I definitely need to get more flow toward the bottom! Tired of seeing red sand as well! The singers on that favia around 6;09 are insane!

You make a great point about chasing wires. A simple solution is the same way I do spark plugs. Black zips for cable management, Red, Blue, Yellow etc for different ends. Simply put the zip around the wire at plug end, clip off. It makes a simple color coded ring. Then create yourself a key that is accessible in whatever maintenance schedule platform you use.

I used duct tape and a red marker to label my plugs. Its nice to know what's what. The heater gets the biggest tape. I have fried a few by forgetting to unplug it if I empty the chamber where it resides. 'Do you hear something sizzling'? 'Yep, forgot to unplug the heater'.

Your videos are so helpful and concise. The animations and editing make all the difference. My only suggestion for this video would be to show two or three tanks with different aquascapes and walk us through how you make a decision about flow based on different stocking scenarios. For instance, Im a newbie and have a 15 aio cube sitting in its box, should I supplement flow at all for a couple of clownfish and maybe a soft coral? Love your videos!

Velocity is going to be a bear to simplify, kind of like PAR. It's dependent on pump position and the other pumps around it or working against it.

For LPS, would you recommend Lagoon Mode or Tide Swell and why? How would mix in Nutrient Export mode into these programs?

Helo guys, first I want to say I like your video’s very much! So keep up the good work 😉. I would like to ask a question. I have a 6 foot tank, 2 feet deep and high. It’s Lps and soft dominated. Some sps. I have a black back in the tank. On the left side the overflow and output of the sump. I don’t like a powerhead on the right side of the tank. So just using the back and left side, how many pumps and what pumps would you use. Behind my scape is about 7 inch.

Now if they would make a Gryer that has a mechanical rotation so you can sweep side to side or top to bottom. Different pumps on at different rates and different times of day to give your tank varied flow, current, velocity.

Hey BRSTv - Fantastic video as always. Out of curiosity, for a long, but shallow tank (Waterbox Frag 165.6 so 1800mm by 600mm wide by 600mm high, what sort of placement/pumps would you recommend? It's a lagoon style, but ideally SPS top side, LPS/Softies closer to the bottom, alongside sand. I appreciate that with it being so shallow, those variable flow rates without disturbing the bottom, but still removing detrius is going to be difficult. My initial thought was placements of the evotechs (Size tbd) on either end, and then two gyres and potentially a pump lower down for lower current. What're your thoughts/recommendations? Be interested to hear your views! Thanks Ollie

With a shallower tank like this, utilizing gyres would be our go-to option for main flow. From there, I would observe the tank's flow and ID any spots that you may want to improve flow around. Once you've identified the specific spot you want to hit, picking the right powerhead based on the angle of flow will be a lot easier.

New hobbyists. I'm using a sine cross flow jebao scp 90 gyre for my 75 gallon tank. I choose this pump based on another video that said this pump eliminates dead spots. My neon duncan and pipe organ and being pounded by the current despite using the lowest setting on the pump. I moved the corals without success because the gyre does it's job well. I'd rather not replace the pump. Your advice is appreciated.

Couldn't agree more with everything you said with the exception of Maxspect Gyre brand. Chose to purchase from Local fish store due to timing. Set up 2 weeks after purchase. Turns out model I bought was being phased out. Spoke with Coralvue and they told me the best they could do is charge me another 120.00 for the newer model as the model I bought was just discontinued. Replaces all 8 pumps and controllers the next day with a different brand.

@@keithwicks9103 To start it was DOA, not failure after using it. No one including the store which had 40 of them in stock knew about the new control module being released. My expectation is that a new product will work when purchased. When I contacted Coralvue they initially offered to credit the store and have it replaced. Was told I would be contacted the next day. After waiting 2 weeks I contacted them. It was then that they offered to sell me a new control unit at retail

For a Zoa tank would you guys recommend short pulse mode on the mp-10?

“Many people face power outages once a year, or once every few years”. Bruh I live in the hood, my power would go out 15 times a year at least or more. I legit just moved and don’t gotta worry about that anymore so I bought a 60 breeder and set it up on Sunday

I have a 20 gallon waterbox cube tank with some anems and a couple clowns and was wondering the best combination of gph and flow angle/placement for this kind of setup? I was thinking wider is better but didn't want to disturb the sand or anems too much with the smaller tank size... Thanks!

Anemones typically do best with wide flow, so you're on the right track there. If you can get a controllable powerhead to vary the flow, that would be a good move too.

A single gyre pump should be able to do the trick for that tank size and type. Something around 2000 GPH like the ReefWave25, XF330, or IceCap 2K would all be great options. We usually set ours to the random flow mode.

gyre needs a ton of cleaning, always small snails who get stuck in it and thats starts to make a lot of noice. its the worse pump on maintenance if ever had pump itself is decent

I have found if I just drop it in citric acid for like 30 mins and run it it comes out very clean

@@reefingbliss2354 my problem is that simply mulm builds up on impellers drums, turns them into slimy soap bars and they simply dont "bite" into water anymore. I no longer do citric baths, just a quick scrub with an old toothbrush is good for then next 4 weeks.

yeah I clean mine every 3-4 weeks and dont even get me started on small snails...still nice pumps for the right job but just ordered a set of mp40s to go with it.

The wattage is the most important measure for pumps. A 20 watt maxijet aimed at the surface will provide much more flow than a 3.5 watt koralia but the koralia has a higher gph. The efficiency of the motors in these pumps have been just about maxed out for decades.

Balance is everything. Flow is always needed but must be tempered to the fish and coral needs. If the coral need it but your selected fish can't thrive, then you are doing them a disservice.

What do you guys think of the Nero 5 for an LPS and Softie tank? or would you suggest sticking with the Tunze 6095

The Nero 5 is a great option for LPS tanks as the angle of flow is somewhere in the middle of wide and narrow. Plus it has quite a few different built-in flow modes to choose from that can help provide varied flow patterns.

Return pump shouldn't be used for flow. It's a tool to filter water so who cares how far it reach into the tank. Water into the overflow box and through the filter is what keeps the tank clean. The flow pumps (MP, Gyre, Tunze) are what should be used to keep sediment and detritus in suspension to be filtered and moving water for coral and fish.

I actually have stopped watching your channel for a while as I was finding the information to repetitive. First BRS video of seen in a while that really pushed the envelope of knowledge. First video I know of that really gets in depth with various in tank pumps.

This entire tropic Marin issue really killed my entire tank. It’s a year old and I have been pulling my hair out this entire time trying to fix it. It’s caused so much stress and a ton of wasted money. I bought the salt from you guys. Any plans on what your going to do for people who bought tropic Marin from your site ?

@@BRStv is there anything your doing for customers that were affected and do not want to stay with the brand ? I have a ton of this salt left and I don’t think I trust it anymore. We put a lot of money into our tanks we need salt we can trust. A lot of money was lost in all of these tanks.

Is dead spots different then cyano? It looks like cyano when the sand gets red! I definetly need 2 wavemakers up high because if I lower it will directly blast corals on the sides close to side wall, If I put to low then it moves the sand but I do get red sand! and if I add one down low that gives me to much flow in a 36 gallon!

For the battery backup topic, do we really need to have battery for a pump? I just have rechargeable air pump with an air stone for when power goes out. I thought if gas exchange is going to be the problem then an air stone would be enough like for freshwater tanks

I think the idea with the backup is that it automatically switches on. So if the power went out an hour after you left for work, you wouldn't come home to an unhappy situation.

The big point is that you need some sort of way to keep oxygen in the aquarium during a power outage. Breaking the surface tension with a pump is a really effective way to do it, but in most cases, a battery powered air pump will suffice. Of course, not every system is created equal and some systems will benefit more from a full on battery backup setup vs others. For example, a small nano tank will likely be fine with an air stone, while a larger system would benefit more from a pump on a battery backup.

What Would you recomend for a tank 60x50x50 cm ? Sps tank 10mm glass so no vortech mp10 could I use two mp40 and dial Them in for the tank ?

Two MP40's would certainly work, but you'd be dialing them back quite a bit and not using them to their full potential. Going with a pair of smaller pumps like two of the Nero 5 might be a better option for you. www.bulkreefsupply.com/nero-5-powerhead-3000-gph-aqua-illumination.html

We've definitely found Gyre pumps to be a "right tool for the right job" for unique flow needs. It's certainly not the right tool for everyone or every tank, but man are they great when you need that laminar sheet of flow over corals or along the sides of the tank!

I don't mind dead spots. Reason being the detritus collects there which makes it easy to siphon out.

You probably don't want to put an MP60 on a 10 gallon system, but as long as it's not grossly oversized, you shouldn't have issues.

And what is best for mixed tank what most of us have?

Using a combination of wide and narrow flow powerheads is best for most mixed reef setups. Of course, the aquascape style does come into play as well. A lot of times, a gyre powerhead up at the surface combined with some wide flow is a great choice.

We usually just refer to that as a "standing wave" flow pattern. Most often, this is easiest to get going by using Tunze Wavebox.

What pump changes its angle? Simple solution.

Our Jedao cross flow blows so many micro bubbles we cannot use it. Evan at very bottom of tank.

Seriously, get a battery backup and make sure you can circulate for 48 hours. That gives you enough time to figure out an alternative power source.

Not at all, it's about picking the right tool for the job the first time so that you don't have to buy twice 🙂

I think placement is a big factor and price too. Not really a fan of the vortechs. Actually use AI and Jebao seems to be picking up ground too

Newbie hear how many mp10’s for a Red Sea Reefer 170 for a lps tank and best placement for the pump or pumps. Meaning side of tank or back and how far down. Sorry for all the questions.

For an LPS system, one is probably going to suffice when you also take the return pump flow into account.

GPH is irrelevant? let me see a tank with "low form factor" replace all wavemakers from one of your 4ft+ sps tanks with one of the 2 low form factor wavemakers. lets see how that tank does in 3-6 months

dont bother with any expensive pumps anymore or any pump with no directional adjustment, after Hydor went out of buisness and everyone of my 60-80$ pumps all cracked and leaked electricity i decided never again.. they went under due to this issue, every koralia or whatever pump ive seen cracks, mine, local fish stores, friends.. etc.. no thanks. Now i just buy those cheapo chinese pumps on amazon.. 20$ for 3200gph, with two adjustable heads.. I dont like pumps that have no adjustable directional heads.. seems stupid to have flow aiming in one spot of your tank.. I like adjusting the angles for corals like bubble corals or other corals dont that dont like high flow, and pointing them up at the surface or at sps or what not.. Now i have 3 20$ 3200 gph chinese duel head pumps with magnets.. and never had an issue for a year now.. I dont get why people spend hundreds of those fancy pumps that just stick on the glass and blow water in one direction.. pretty stupid imo

Check out the Tunze pumps if you ever need powerheads in the future. They're more expensive than the off brand pumps, but are ultra reliable, aimable, and come in controllable/ non-controllable versions.

I love you guys but you do try to push too much products sometimes telling people that they should have a back up battery sure its nice but not even close to necessary not all of us have 1000's to throw around you know lol, we have a backup genny and even then one year lots of snow and power out for a week ran out of propane for the genny and I was spending the last 3 days boiling pots of water mixing it with cool water to bring it to reef temp and pouring it into the tank from height to mix oxygen into the water column like every 3 hours because it was only 35 degrees in the house so I had to keep the temp up in our tank for 3 whole days man oh man was I exhausted and sure a battery would have been nice but not even required for successful reefing just saying
