UPDATE 2 - While I've been sick, I can't help but mess around with these things... :) I've been trying various GTA V settings out, including my first use of ShadowPlay recording, which I don't like because it affects the performance, but it isn't as bad as I thought it might be... Before I get to the GTX 1060 cards... here is my game computer from home: Intel i5-6500 16GB RAM EVGA GTX 970 FTW H170 1080p - ShadowPlay is taking about 5% of the overall performance, sometimes as little as 3%, but I'm calling it 5% as I've seen that from time to time. 4K - ShadowPlay is taking 10% of the performance and this is fairly steady. 1080p - Very High - FXAA - Recording Off - Avg 91 - Min 66 - Max 132 1080p - Very High - FXAA - Recording On - Avg 86 - Min 57 - Max 120 4K - High - No FXAA - Recording Off - Avg 61 - Min 43 - Max 78 4K - High - No FXAA - Recording On - Avg 55 - Min 38 - Max 71 I've run these multiple times and tested other settings to see how repeatable they are... Now I'm going to stick the 1060 cards in and compare... Not sure when I'll upload the videos, I want to do a voice over and I'm still sick, but there are some results from the 970 FTW card (running at EVGA's shipped FTW speed)

YES! Check out Newegg.com's BF deals which are going on right now. I've seen 1060s for less than $199!! And here's the question I have for Tech Deals. If there's a $20 difference between the 3GB and 6GB version, would you then go for the 6GB version? I think I would. Because, here's my next question, As I put add-ons onto my Bethesda games, will I have to worry about that 3GB cap? For me, I just quite justify $400 for a graphics card. I've had a hard time justifying $300. So, that leaves me to buy graphics cards that are already 2 years old.

I chose the GTX 1060 3gb mainly because it plays all the games I WANT to play. By the time most games require more than 3gb of vram to play on high there will already be a new gpu at the $200 range such as gtx 1160 or rx 580.

In my country the 6gb is 100 euros more expensive... it's just bs. Since I only play in 1080p I bought the 3gb one, I think I had no choice. If the difference was really only 30 euros or something as some people say I would go straight to the 6gb but that's not the case. I feel kinda worried though about future games since they are asking more and more vram because of the textures. But even if they ask more I think I could still play them by just going down a little bit in the textures quality since that's the main thing that requires more vram in the gpu. Anyways, I don't really know why NVidia had the "amazing" idea to launch this 3gb gpus would it be too much for them to keep the 4gb standard as they had in some previous cards... idk, but I think that this was the correct solution for me I wouldn't certainly pay 100 more euros for more fuckin 3gb to play at 1080p 60hz with just a little boost on the texture resolutions I just think that's dumb and too much money.

Surprised that there's no comment saying there IS one game (which should be known too) that needs 6GB of VRAM for Ultra detail; Shadow of Mordor. Even so, benchmarks shows that it tends to use only up to 4, the 6 may be for 'security'. Other than that, 6GB of VRAM can be a big future proof, so it just MAY be worth getting, although not for another 50, Nvidia is just too damn greedy nowadays.

Hey, first wanted to say this is a great channel, you're practically spot on with your reviews and analytics. Definite subscribe. That being said, I'd like to ask - were those GTX 1060 3gb/6gb 1440p and 4k GTA5 tests done on a system with 8 or 16 gb's of RAM? If on 16, is there any chance you can repeat them on a 8gb DDR3 system? (the 1440p Ultra test at least). I have a strong suspicion this is where 1060 3gb will show it's difference with 6gb, as game will be already utilizing full 8 gigs of RAM for own needs, not leaving anything spare for textures. Not asking for a whole new video of that, but would be good to know - as NONE of those reviewers who do benchmarks do it on a 8gb ddr3 system, while ALOT of people have that setup, and not 16-32 gb's of DDR4 (myself incl).. Which, in effect, may end up them being fooled about today performance of 1060 3gb vs 6gb verison based on system specs, and these 2 cards are what people with such system specs will be going for. The ones with 16-32gb ddr4 will go for 1070 or 1080 probably. Checking for stuff like textures not loading in time on 1060 3gb vs 6gb despite the similiar FPS (if it'll be the case) would be appreciated too.

I've just started in PC gaming with a PC that my friend gave me when he bought a new one. Its about 5 years old, i5 with VTX Radeon HD 7970 x-edition graphics card, 16gb of RAM. The 7970 is having some weird shader issues in GTA V (there's a video on my channel) that I just can't fix. This video has helped me decide that the 3gb EVGA 1060 SC is the card for me. Thank you! I really appreciate how you explain things so clearly without too much jargon. I also really appreciate your lack of jump cuts that seem to plague most KZread review videos!

My first serious graphics card was a Radeon 7870, and it had 2GB of VRAM. Everyone at the time said 2GB is plenty. It wasn't even a year later that the 2GB of VRAM started limiting what games I could play and at what settings. The price difference isn't that big now ($200 vs $180), so I'll go with the 6GB for futureproofing reasons.

Just got mine for 300eu after taxes, never getting a low vram card ever again. Last card I had was the 960 2gb and had to lower some settings due to lack of vram, I hated that feeling cause it was seriously holding the card back. The 3gb model here is no improvement either, anyone thats thinking of getting one or the other, dont think, get the 6gb or youll definitely regret it because this card is pretty beast but I can already see that 3gb limit as a problem, most AAA games at ultra will require 4gb minimum, so whats the point in having a card that can withstand ultra easily but gets choked by the lack of vram. These days cards should be standard 6gb minimum, hell I would have gotten an 8gb model of there was.

I just bought the 3 gig card. The reason is because of budget and the fact that they were out of the 6 gig cards and I did not want to wait. I am not a gamer. I never play games. I bought the card for NLE video editing. So far, it meets my needs as much as I expect it would at this price range. An important thing that really stood out for me is how little power it uses when my computer is idle. Also, how the small amount of heat from it. The fan is at zero RPM as I type this and takes a while to start up when I render a video. It uses only 10 watts more than with just the Intel graphics when the machine is idle. My old 580 used an extra 100 watts while sitting idle. That is 100 watts being wasted and it did a number on my light bill. It also caused my machine to use more than 300 watts when rendering. The new card is infinitely more efficient than the old 580 was. Finally, I can use my computer with a powerful video card and not run up my light bill. Economical to buy and economical to use. I never came close to using all of the memory on the old 580 so 3 gig on this card is an extra bonus in case I ever need it and I doubt if I will ever need it. Finally, Vegas Pro 15 is starting to use these cards again and should do a whole lot more in the near future. www.thestoprock.com

I love the channel, but I have to disagree on not being able to tell the difference between 54 fps and 60 fps. On my 60 Hz screen I can notice a pretty big difference from anything 55 fps and below versus 60 fps. Maybe it's because I play with vsync on and always try to tailor settings to get a consistent 60 fps. Now 57 fps is close enough to 60 fps that I usually can't tell the difference unless I have a frame counter onscreen, but 54 fps I feel like I can catch most of the time. So many times I feel like I'm getting a frame drop and then I press the button I have setup for showing stats and the frame counter says 55 or 53 or something in that range.

It's normal - the best framerate is constant framerate. I'm ready to argue that 30 fps lock is better than fluctuating between 30 and 60 fps - our brain just can't adapt to the constant changes in fps that quickly. I remember the days when I played GTA San Andreas with frame limiter in the menu which caped to 25 fps (which was preferable because of the huge fluctuations in the framerate in different areas) and it still felt silky smooth because my brain got used to it :)

  • @JohnPlissken

    7 жыл бұрын

Nope. But I have a 4gb R9 290x, in the settings menu it tells you how much VRAM it is using. I can max my card out if I turn MSAA 8x, shadows, reflections, etc on the max settings. And it starts to take a performance hit before it uses all of my vram. So based on that, if you want to play max settings 1080p, that is EVERYTHING maxed, without risking frame rates dropping, you will probably want 6gb or more. Given that might not be as much of an issue with those new cards though, the faster cores will probably take some of the load off the vram. But even if that is the case, I would still not be recommending anyone buy a 3gb card and expect to be able to play everything maxed. And GTA V is not the most demanding game out there. It is demanding, but plenty of other games require more, especially if you get into early access where they are less well optimized.

    1. MSAA 8x is silly, a total performance destroyer, but fair enough... 2. The VRAM in the settings window is just a guess, not an actual number 3. There is "max settings", then there is "silly settings" :) Hyper in Mirror's Edge Catalyst or Nightmare in Doom are two examples of "silly settings"

Hey, max is max. I mean, yeah I usually will say i'm running it at max, but i'm technically not. You really can't tell the difference aside from the frame rate, but those settings do still exist. But more important I think is, when you are advising someone on a GPU upgrade, you should probably take into account that they will want the best performance possible not only in today's games, but also games that are coming out several years from now. At least that's how I roll. I don't have an R9 290x because I'm a dumbass who decided it would be a good idea to buy a 5 year old GPU that still costs $500+. I have an R9 290x because I bought it 5 years ago, and don't see any point in flushing money down the toilet every year for the newer model.

And some people say the 3GB (for 1080p) sucks lol, they need to watch this video. Also, you all have to know that while game developers/publishers try everything to make the game's system requirements as low as possible to get more customers as TechDeals saying here, the graphics card companies on the other hand of course want to sell more of their roducts as well to make money and to be better than the "enemy" (Nvidia > AMD, AMD > Nvidia). And i am sure that without consoles and all of this business thing and when everyone would be rich to buy the best PC hardware, we would have games with much bigger worlds, more realism, photrealism graphics and the ability in Grand Theft Auto to enter ALL buildings and having more than 100.000 different vehicles, because the technology can, but the companies won't do that. And now they even produce and sell cards with 11GB!!! Who or what the hell needs 11GB VRAM? None, but this is just a marketing tactic to make people believe "11GB VRAM is 1000 times faster and better" and the winner is not the customer, it is the company for getting $$$. Great video, thanks for that! I'm of course getting the 3GB GTX 1060!

Oligampla This is sad but true. Majority of consumers are not geek like us. 9/10 out of people I've met in real life believe in something like GTX 1050ti 4GB is better than GTX 980 4GB just because 10 series> 7 series and RX 480 8GB is twice faster than RX 480 4GB. LOL They just look for the card with latest series and highest amount of VRAM. The graphics card companies know this really well and taking advantage of it.

I know very late comment on this video, but I really enjoyed it. I watch other channels like JayzTwoCents and GamersNexus and your video was much more informative. You really break down the price to performance aspect instead of just going after pure performance regardless of price. In this type of price range the main thing is price to performance I think for pretty much everyone. I really appreciate your video and helping me put my self at ease for getting the 1060 3GB. The other channels I watch all made it seem like a huge mistake, even though I only paid $160 for the 3GB version. I will definitely have to start checking back more regularly!

The issue with the 3GB version, aside from the 5% perf difference is that games that don't require a lot of VRAM tend to not push the card anyway, and those that bottleneck the GPU will also generally require more VRAM. And here lies the issue - the issue is that VRAM (or any RAM) works well only if you have more than you need. A game that is hitting that VRAM capacity ceiling is going to degrade in performance. The 6GB will always have enough VRAM even for games that eat more than 3GB of VRAM, there's a number of games that, when settings are set to the highest, will hit VRAM around 3.5GB to 4.5GB. This goes up further if the user plays at 1440p. I state that the 3GB version is a waste of money and time - if you buy a GPU for games that don't use more than 3GB of VRAM you're better off buying a cheaper 1050Ti with 4GB or an RX480/470. (i'll watch the remaining 20m of video now) EDIT1: You mentioned "at 1080p" resolution - it doesn't matter much because Supersampling and Virtual Resolution exist.

As matter of fact after seeing new cards like gtx 1660 and newly launched rx 5500 xt , I am motivated only to buy them at a psychological level and not at performance perspective, As my 1060 3g still performs relatively well on my 1080p display. Great video, a real eyeopener. I was looking for a best buy offer of the 1060 chipset and you convinced me to buy the 3GB version instead of the 6GB. I actually checked your remarks about the 10% speed loss and it is correct in the benchmarks! But, I play on an 1440p monitor and what I saw was the drop in performance when on the highest level of detail. I will just put the settings a little bit lower or set in on 1080p. I can't sell it to myself to spend 100 euro more for 3 extra GB's memory or spend even 300 euro's more for a 1070 version.
