Games lately have been using vram unnecessarily just in case. Example is black ops 4. Sure it's "using" 2.8/3gb or 5.9/6gb or whatever, but in reality it's probably only using about 3gb. It has data in that vram just in case, but isn't actively using it. A lot of newer games are doing this, so the reported VRAM usage is becomingly increasingly irrelevant. I think it was gamers nexus or digital foundry that did a great video on this a few months ago.

It's not so much they are "using" the V ram, but their programming allots a lot of V ram, to the task at hand. That is partly why the footage showed about double use between the 1060 3 and 6 GB. It's mainly the allotment by the programming, more than actual use. The evidence of that, was shown in the one game where both GPU's used the same amount. It's the programming, not the game specifically

textures get stored in vram and unused stuff becomes cache. having spare vram allows for less data calls from disk/ram (less io/ram usage) and less stuff flowing through the pcie link. assuming i'm right this mechanism should be obvious when loweing pcie link speed to say 4x.

What really stood out to me was the amount of system being used in Tomb Raider. The 3 gig model used about 2 gig less VRam while using about 2 gigs more system ram to compensate, at times going above 9 gigs. That leads me to believe some games on a 3 gig card would suffer even more on a system with only 8 gigs of system ram. Would be nice to see Tomb Raider being re-run with 8 gigs system ram to answer that question as a lot of people getting the 3 gig card are doing so for budgetary reasons. So do you get more system ram or a graphics card with more vram? Which combination would be best in this situation?

There are people who don’t have patience & have to get some thing now. They buy the cheap card now & 6 months later regret it when a new game tanks the performance. I have experienced this myself. If you’re a serious gamer & care about the experience you will invest into a better setup. And it’s worth waiting a little longer for.

@@mikeramos91 Why wouldn't it? For VAST majority of people playing on PC's cards like gtx 1060 6gb/RX 580 are basically top of the line they can get or even want to get. No reason to go for stuff like gtx1080 or more if you are just gaming on 1080p. August 18, 2016 Is the release date of 1060 3gb, that is 2.5 years ago(hardly 6 months). Even watching this video you can see that the card is still alive and well, despite uneducated babbling of people like yourself. You lack perspective, so i'm gonna give you one. When GTX 770 had 2 and 4gb version, everyone was babbling how 4gb version is more future proof. When GTX 960 had 2 and 4gb version, everyone was babbling how 4gb version is more future proof. When GTX 1060 had 3 and 6gb version, everyone was babbling how 6gb version is more future proof. so... 770 became too weak over time to allow for ultra settings gameplay in AAA titles to actually utilize 4gb of its vram, same with gtx 960. So in both cases, getting higher VRAM versions served no purpose whatsoever. Where is that future proofing? By the time 4gb vram buffer became relevant, cards were too weak. We are 2.5 years past the release of 1060 3gb and besides literally few titles on the market, card is delivering great 1080p performance(in fact it delivers great performance in general, just those few titles are vram hogs hence why it loses couple of frames here and there). But also as time passes by, its computing power in relation to new releases is getting weaker. Which in turn means that due to lack of computing power one has to lower graphical settings anyway, which... causes VRAM requirements to drop. The settings one turns off first (like AA) when he lacks FPS are also the VRAM hogs. On top of that you have to consider this -> ultra settings are pointless. You can run game on ultra and then on very high and you won't notice a difference unless you look for it. The main area you will notice the difference, is the framerate. 2.5-3 or even 4 years of use out of mid range gpu is about as much as one could ask for. Not to mention, not every gamer plays every AAA title that gets released. And that "serious gamer" bs you mentioned, you can shove where sun does not shine. You are simply repeating bunch of retards on forums how one thing is superior than the other to feel better about yourself and your choice. Don't talk about how one made a bad decision when buying a GPU if you can't even use your brain to get the perspective first. If the card fits the needs of someone, then it was a good purchase and buying something more powerfull would have been a waste of money.

  • @jaklawrence4301

Most of the time, games will show themselves as using more VRAM on a card that has more VRAM because the game is coded to pre-load. If you have a larger frame buffer, it'll pre-load more stuff. As long as the GPU is fast enough to render and store textures at a good enough rate, having less space for pre-loading usually won't make that much difference. The problem comes when you up the resolution, and you no longer have the VRAM to pre-load far enough ahead for a smooth experience.

I bought a 1060 3gb for my first PC build during the Summer of May 2017 and watched your original 2016 edition of the 1060 3gb vs 6gb. You simply convinced me to buy the 3gb card since it was negligible to buy a more expensive 1060 6GB for I believe you said at the time was a 6% performance difference. For the uninitiated at the time, that video was informative enough to provide performance metrics and concision, that does not confuse those who are new to buying PC parts/novices looking to build a PC for the first time. As of now, I am on a 1070 and my 1060 3gb is in one of my friend’s first PC builds. The 1060 3gb is still a kick ass card for 1080p gaming in 2019 for those who are not obsessed with getting high frame rates.

Game producers that make games like Strange Brigade should really be applauded for making efficient games that run well on the vast majority of cards while still providing a modern graphic game. It seems like many game makers just use the more powerful cards coming out as an excuse to write sloppier code that the newer cards will bulldoze through. This mitigates a great deal of the improvements of the new cards and also means older cards that could run the games with no problems cannot. Anyway thanks for the video and comparisons as always!

I know the reasons for the 16GB of high speed ram, of course - trying to not let the performance of the cards be affected by the rest of the system. But I believe, that in this case, it's just making the cards more reliant on the system ram, and someone with 8GB of ram or maybe even 16GB of slower ram (could be a ddr3 system, for example) the performance penalty for using system ram would be bigger. In my country, Brazil, most people looking for a gpu on this performance level probably have an 8GB ddr3 system, and those are the people that would buy a 3GB 1060 instead of the 6GB.

The 3gb card which is choking the VRAM is using more system ram than the 6gb card. While the 3gb card is using almost 10gb of system ram, the 6gb card is using less than its half. Is system ram affecting while VRAM is used more than it can handle? what if the system ram is limited to 8gb, are the performance is still the same? it might be nice to know for the person that has a tight budget and only can use/bought 8gb system ram, so they know which card should they get.

I was about to write the same. The test setting despite being fair is highly unrealistic. One would assume that a PC that has the 1060 3GB variant is unlikely sporting 16 GB of actual system RAM. I even know quite a lot of people that still only have 8 GB of RAM with better graphics cards. A more realistic picture would be to count the combined total of VRAM and RAM as a metric. In that case I would assume that the 1060 6 GB would perform about the same with only 8 GB of system RAM than the 3 GB with 16 GB. The 3 GB version in this scenario wold have access to 5 GB more RAM but this difference would kind of be remedied by the 6 GB's better overall performance I guess. But as a rule of thumb the smaller you VRAM the more RAM you need and more importantly the faster your system RAM has to be.

Very glad to have done that as the 1060 3 gb is more than enough for 1080p gaming Ultra to very high graphics settings even for the AAA and most other game titles. Will be waiting for the next version of Nvidia RTX 2060 or the Radeon VII future version. Hope they come within the next year quickly.

I bought a EVGA GTX 1060 3gb, a week before Christmas. I do not regret that decision, i bought it new off of EVGA's ebay site (EVGA_official), it was 199.00 and i had a 15.00 off ebay code, so paid only 184.00 for mine. I could have waited for the prices now, but i feel i got the best price at the time (new prices were 199.00 average at the time). I don't play modern AAA games, so do not need a max effort GPU like the 6gb 1060 or 2060. Thank you for this vid, nice to know the 3gb is still fine. Edit: i could have bought a 6gb 1060 used, for about the same price or cheaper. So why did i go with a new 3gb? I already said the first reason, please see above. The second reason was simply it's brand new, no possible problems with buying a possible mining GPU. Also i have a full EVGA warranty if anything goes wrong

I had been working hard to help support my household and been saving up for new computer for two years. Then, in 2013 I bought a new prebuild PC for about 660 euros. i5-3570, 8GB of DDR3 1600Hz RAM and 2GB GTX660 OC card. When I later got a 1080p monitor I saw how slow and limiting my GPU was. I overclocked it, tweaked the graphics and did other stuff. Later in 2015 I enrolled to university and needed money for survival in the other city. So whenever I came back home, I did play with my PC up until last summer, even though experience was not that good (I mean sub 30FPS not good). Then, after 2 years of craving to get 6GB GTX1060 I finally managed to find a new job and time. I bought that card and even my old ass PC was able to handle stuff so well. RE2, Kingdom Come run amazingly. Now I can put some money aside and build prev gen PC before moving to an apartment, which will eat more money. I will put my 1060 6G with R5 2600x and 16GB RAM for 1080p or 1600x1050 gaming. It will be last gen PC, but considering how much money I'll need later and how long my last PC lasted, I will be able to enjoy some titles anyway. Medium to high details, 40 FPS is enough. And CPUs aren't aging as quickly as GPUs. So I think I'll skip R 3000 generation before change. Gonna need an new GPU after a year and a half though. My point is, if you have financial problems and can have some money aside now, build a system now as later you might miss the opportunity since life gets in a way. But be more careful with GPU buys: get 1060 6G only if it's 150€, go with 2060 optimally if your system is already a nice base or wait for 1660. Or AMD equivalent.

BootherJr not on every market those are available. Rx 580 is a no brainer in most countries. It’s new, it comes with free games. 980ti is obviously faster (I used to have one) but it is used and almost 4 years old at this point, not everyone want to buy a used card. Sure, if it’s refurbished and comes with a limited warranty for the same price as the rx 580 then hell yeah, go ahead, buy it, it’s at least 35% faster in most games. But again, refurbished cards are not a thing in many countries (at a reasonable price) and used 980ti’s are STILL more expensive (300ish dollars) in many countries than 580’s. Trust me, I made a research.

Learnt something new from this video. Games use more VRAM when it's available, but adjusts itself and uses less when it's not, as shown in Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I honestly never knew and didn't really consider that would be the case, but I guess it does make sense for AAA games, with such a large budget backing it, to be using game engines that have this implemented to get more copies sold. In response to what games I would like to see tested, I've mentioned this in your last video, but any modern and popular game really. The recent Resident Evil 2 Remake and Kingdom Hearts III, the soon to be released Anthem and Devil May Cry 5. Metro Exodus that was just released would be a good addition too and even less demanding games like Apex Legends are good for comparison purposes. I know benchmarking is very time consuming and a lot of hard work, you've also explained this to me, but maybe alternating between them to give more variety while keeping the benchmarks fresh and new. Like this video is Resident Evil 2 Remake with Metro Exodus, the next can be Devil May Cry 5 with Kingdom Hearts III, the one after is Metro Exodus and Kingdom Hearts III, etc. I just think keeping up with AAA games being benchmarked is good, because AAA games are a fad, they'll attract views that are interested in those games, unfortunately they come and go really quick, and more so for single player games. Like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the hype has quieted down already. Resident Evil 2 Remake and Kingdom Hearts III will follow suit very soon. So maybe reduce some older games being benchmarked would help reduce the amount of time needed to make these videos? Again, these are simply suggestions, as I know it's difficult and when the games don't have built-in benchmarks, it's even harder. Furthermore, game preference is important too. Personally, if I don't like a game, having to sit through it would be an absolute pain and I'd resent it, so I understand not all games are to your liking and therefore you have less incentive to benchmark them. P.s. Before someone suggests I'm only picking out games I'm interested in and want to disregard games I'm not interested in, no. I'm not someone who plays a lot of new games, most of the ones I've mentioned above I don't play or not interested in, but I know they've gotten a lot of attention, and if I want to play a new game, as long as it's good enough, I don't care about benchmarks, I'll turn details down to play. The suggestions are simply for the interest of the video to attract audience. I like these videos, I've learnt from these videos, so I want them to do well.

Vram usage does hinder framerates but that isn't represented that well with averages. Intense sceans that can require more vram will studder. As the card is memory starved it will show as choppy playback with frequent uplifts and stalls.

It doesn't much difference for gtx 1060 if you have 2400 RAM or 3200 - 8gb is enough, and the amount is what first matter - eveb 16 gb ddr3 1600 is better than 8gb ddr4 3200, so 12-16 gb is top for gtx 1060 3 gb. And there is more powerfull gpu with 3gb with high textures - 780 at example, because of memory bandwith - 1060 is 192 bit - 780 is 384 bit. Even with more render units gtx 1060 3gb barely reach his vram, before the chip reach 100% - I had one and tested it.

@techdeals I agree that people are too quick to jump when it comes to vram allocation and usage. We dont know exactly how much is being used to actually render those sceans. 3 GB could be sufficient in titles that allocate 4 or more on cards with larger buffers. My main issue is that the framerate averages may be similar to where they should be give the given computational power on the cards, but nothing ruins a game more than frequent microstudder and uneven frametimings. Sceans that require more than 3GB of buffer may have a slight dip in averages but may be unplayable with studering. I would love to see the 1% and .1% lows on these tests. I think viewers need to know that.

I wish we could have seen some actual gameplay footage with frametimes. Is it possible that the in-game benchmarks don't actually show this lack of Vram as live gameplay would? Also would be useful to really see if compression or texture pop-in is noticable. I saw in one of AdoredTv's videos I think, a 2080 at 4k very high struggle in Shadow of the Tomb Raider in actual gameplay (edit: where the 1080ti and Radeon 7 didn't, with 11 and 16 gbs of vram). And in Far Cry 5 , also 4k, very high settings, the 2080 had some serious spikes in the frametime graph, compared to the Radeon 7. Also, for many games higher resolution textures are dependant on vram and don't affect performance so being able to set textures to ultra, or high resolution texture packs for games, this would be a case were more vram is useful. Honestly, at this point personally I wouldn't buy a 3 or 4 gb vram card and I am surprised to see Nvidia perhaps readying a 3 gb 1660.

Also what a lot of people don't understand is that there is difference between VRAM game will allocate and VRAM games will actively use. Some games will take all the VRAM they can get or could get at the time they were released, but use only fraction of that, unless you really max out textures, antialiasing and some other VRAM heavy settings, or crank up rendering resolution and stuff. 6GB will take this bit better, be it at expense of FPS, due to processing power of GPU. Also there might be bit more VRAM intensive section where 3GB could drop bit more. It will just highly depend on whether game actually tries to actively use more VRAM than card can provide and has to start swapping things from RAM. Some swapping is fine, they optimize for that, but more you have to do, more it will effect the performance. And of course then there is whole thing with philosophy of developers about graphics, which is now more shifted towards making good experience accessible. In Crysis times, you were missing out if you didn't play on ultra, but nowdays, medium looks good, granted high still looks noticeably better, but above medium, it has diminishing returns, especially when it comes to ultra, high vs ultra, you will mostly need screenshots to spot the difference. And yeah, that is only done by developers, as mentioned in the video, to make sure their game is enjoyable on popular hardware, not just high end. Though "How much VRAM do you need?" question would be much better answered by 4GB vs 8GB RX580, since those are pretty much same card, except for VRAM, unlike 1060s. I still think 1060 6GB should really be 1060Ti. Though back in the day when it came out, a lot of people were saying 1060 3GB should really be 1050Ti, but that was because 1060 3GB came out before actual 1050Ti. But that is whole another rant for another day.

970s typically value at $100 or less, if you know how to bargain hunt. Sure, it’s not a Pascal card, but the 970 still holds up today and Maxwell is known for pretty good overclocking headroom.

I'd like to add something as this is crucial in the whole "3GB is still capable". When the graphic card is running out of VRAM, most of the extra allocation goes to the system RAM and you can observe this in the video when the system RAM usage for 3GB card is significantly higher. I myself use a 1060 3GB and I absolutely love it. But truth to be told, there's a caveat in using the 3GB card for games with high VRAM use: You definitely need more RAM to accommodate the allocation off the VRAM, and faster RAM would be very beneficial. If per chance anyone going for a 3GB 1060, or even 4GB RX card on that matter, consider the cost of upgrading the RAM if you're running on slower RAM like DDR3 (like me) or just having enough at the moment vs the cost of the higher VRAM variant.

Pay attention to your ram usage. Every time you exceed 3 gb vram on the 1060 3gb your used ram surges. The memory is still used but not on the card anymore. You are correct about how developers are learning to make smart games. Most of the time developers will load up the vram with a bunch of data that is rarely used, this is a way of squeezing extra performance (Windows is doing the same). When the data is needed it will be already in memory and fast to access. What the modern games do when the card does not have enough memory for all the data is keep in the vram the information that will be accessed often and push to the system ram the data that will not be accessed very frequently. You used a very fast ram on your tests, that made the difference in performance negligible. At the end I tend to agree with you, I have a RX 580 4gb and if by a miracle my game uses more than 4 gb I just let it take part of my ram. I don't see any difference in performance and if there is any it is marginal. Now there are exceptions, that will be the case when the game uses the ram as an extension of the vram and does not prioritise what data goes where. That is the reason why a few games had a big difference in performance.

Nice video but there is big flaw in testing. Your use 16 gb ram, while most 1060 users only have 8 gb of ram. Your testing shows interesting ram usage for 1060 3 gb which is always 50% higher than 1060 6 gb. Huge ram usage disparity might lead to terrifying connclusion that 1060 3 gb might not even work in medium settings.

There's also quite a difference in how Vram affects things depending on the rest of the subsystem, if you are rocking a modern multicore with plenty of cache, a fast Nvme drive and 16gb of 3200mhz DDR4, perceived stutter is way, way less than if you are still rocking 1600mhz ddr3 on an older i5 with an optical drive

This video makes me feel alot better about my decision to buy my RX 480 4gb back 2 years ago. I bought it over the gtx 1060 3gb because more vram for the same money at that time, plus the performance isn't cut down like the 1060 is. My monitor is only a 60hz over 5 years old 27 inch so until I update that I don't see the need for a faster GPU.

@Tech Deals One thing i missed in this video was the mention of the actual system RAM usage. Yes, the 3GB card had less VRAM usage in the same games and it seemed plenty enough for 1080p. But the system RAM usage in the same scenarios seems to have always been 1.5 to 2GB higher than that of the system with the 6GB card. So the GPU simply had the system RAM buffer more textures that it could then load. Now i would love to see a comparison of the 3GB and 6GB Model with an 8GB system. The 1060 (and 580) is still an entry/mid range level card so i wouldn't be surprised if there are quite a bit out there working only with 8GB system RAM. Would be interesting to see if that would made a difference.

The system with 3GB 1060 seems to use more system memory in every game (shown in video) then the system with the 6GB 1060. Biggest difference in Tomb Raider with 9.1 GB vs 6.7 GB. What would happen if the system(s) only had 8 GB system memory?

what i got out of this video, see if my analogy makes any sense: amt of vram is size of bucket, game dev decides how much of bucket to use. kind and speed of vram is how quickly bucket is filled. game detail is viscosity of liquid. processing units is amount of straws in the bucket and speed is the amount of suction they are doing. oh and newer cards equals bigger diameter straws. resolution is the cup size and framerate is how many of those cups that can be filled. Am I missing anything?

  • @philipcooper8297
    @philipcooper82975 жыл бұрын

VRAM is all about the game engine. Some use the VRAM as a buffer, storing the extra textures and geometry ahead of the time (before you get to them in the game, reducing the LOD/pop in). Theoretically a 3GB card has to work harder, than the 6GB card, which may store everything that it might use again in a short period of time. Sure you want more VRAM, if you can, but that does not mean a 3GB/4GB card, if the GPU is fast enough, would make 1080p/60Hz gaming impossible.

Yep, I noticed that as well. Way more system RAM usage in that game with the 3GB card. I've got a 6GB 1060 in my laptop at the moment but I've been seriously contemplating upgrading to the 1070 since games are going to start ramping up as the next-gen consoles emerge in the coming years (and I have no intention of buying a new system as I'm sticking with Windows 7, so I'm hoping my 7700k can still handle it), but unfortunately it will cost me $400~$800 to get one which is kind of insane. It's unfortunate that they never did standardize MXM for mobile GPUs to make the cards more universal with the different platforms/manufacturers (I can only use the version of the 1070/1060 designed for my particular system even though there are other mobile MXM 1060's and 1070's out there for other systems). I'm sure that someday they will since technically speaking it's all just PCIe anyway, but they'll first need to standardize some aspects of cooling and power capabilities to get there.

tbh when building/buying a gaming PC you should always go with 16gb. That's been kind of the standard for some time now. I think the first extreme example of performance difference was with Just Cause 3. That was a stuttery mess on systems with 8gb RAM while similar systems but with 16gb RAM didn't encounter those issues.

You were talking about the RX580 8GB having the same shader count as the 4GB. I always looked at the RX580 cards (4GB or 8GB) are in the same class as the GTX 1060 6GB, and the RX570 (4GB or 8GB) are in the same class as the GTX 1060 3GB. Obviously you have a choice of VRam sizes in each of those, but the RX570 is about the same decrease as the GTX 1060 3GB. Unless you buy the RX580 2048, which should be called the RX570 OC, but that's another story. Nvidia loves that a lot of people think the GTX 1050 class is the same as the RX570 class, but the 570 is much faster. Even then the 1050 ti.

I would've loved for this comparison to use more modern games, like the new RE2 Remake or The Division 2. Games that need a bit more horsepower. Of course GTA V is going to run fine :) As consoles share 8GB both for CPU and GPU, most games will be optimized for that amount.
