GTW460ASJWW washing one mop head, GE top load washer

Dennis Miracle wanted me to wash a mop head in this washer and went through the trouble of shipping to me. I understand his concerns after filming with this video. Some machines can handle an unbalanced load better than others. I would try to avoid loading machine knowing that it will be unbalanced. Thanks again to Mr. Miracle for sending the mop head.

I've had this machine for 14 months now. Prior to it we had a new Maytag Bravos (plate style agitator) which was two years old. The Maytag replaced a 23 year old Kenmore. The Maytag was fine except it took about an hour and a quarter for one load, thus we bought this GE. Now, the GE is by no means our old Kenmore, but as far as newer washers go, we have been very happy with it and it does several loads a week. The first thing I did was bought the part on the lid that goes into the lid lock hole. That way, I can put the spare part in and it will operate with the lid up. One thing that I have learned is that the water level will vary depending on the cycle. For example, When set on Super water level, it will fill to the fullest on heavy white cycle, fills to just over top holes. Other cycles Super water level will fill tub to 2 holes to three holes down. Also, on any cycle besides white heavy, I will pour a gallon of water on the load before starting and any cycle will go to the top holes on Super water level. I've only done this a couple of times so it's not like a lot of work. Most times I just set the cycle and go. The only issue I have had with the machine is that it does overbalance easy. But I do just as another poster suggested and put in an extra towel or something to balance it. Speaking of balance... I have often wondered why the modern washers don't have an overbalance signal? Washers of old (My old Kenmore) would cut off if it got overbalanced and an overbalance light would flash. Some models also had a buzzer that would sound. Honestly, I haven't seen any of the modern washers that are worth squat with the possible exception of Speed Queen, but as for what is available, I have been very happy with this GE. It does clean the clothes very well and in a reasonable amount of time. When we decided to replace the Maytag, we were considering Speed Queen but a big ruckus started about their 2018 models which were far inferior to anything prior to it because of some changes they made and the reviews were awful, so we bypassed SQ. I've been told Speed Queen fixed some of the bad 2018 changes but I haven't followed up.

Not to mention that Speed Queen prices have gone over $1200. I paid about $750 in 2013. Not paying $1200 in January 2021. My Speed Queen died this week - 7 years of service. Today's washers are nothing like the workhorses of the 1970s.

I have a Maytag washer that I bought 3 1/2 years ago. I HATE it. I have talked to Lowes, sent emails to Maytag corporate along with pictures of clothing that will NOT come clean, tried soaking in the machine (that's laughable....even on what they call "SOAK" some of the clothing comes out with dry streaks), using gallons of SprayNWash, spending so MUCH time on laundry!! Laundry used to be one of my easiest household tasks. Just put in the detergent and wash the clothes. I would give anything to have my first washing machine (which was a Maytag!) I had it for 20 + years and it washed an average of 2-3 loads a day with 3 boys playing sports. If only I could have looked into the future and seen what was coming. I would have had it repaired and completely refurbished and used it another 20 years!

I had a GE washer for over 11.5 years. It NEVER got out of balance. It was by far the best washer I ever owned. I purchased a new GE 4.5 cu ft washer in June of 2021. The. Agitator fell off during a load of clothes. It definitely has balance issues. It also vibrates greatly when it starts to spin. Not the best washer. Not sure they make many good washers like they used to.

My GE that is 5 years old sounds like a freight train on the spin cycle. Also occasionally it won’t do a real spin. When it spins properly my clothes are super wrinkled that I have to iron them. Ugh. I’m looking for a new one and I’m a little scared of buying a GE. So thanks for the video. Very informative.

I wished there was a way I could see it go through a full cycle and never expected to find something like this. Thank you for taking the time to video this. The Speed Queen TR SERIES have like a partial neutral drain. 4 or 5 inches of water go down first, then a spin to the left, pause, and then spins clockwise the first spin having a 45 second spray rinse before reaching full spin speed. If a second rinse option selected you'll also get another spray rinses before filling up for another tub rinse.

I give this video 4.5 stars out of 5. I liked it very much the only thing missing was to show the noise level during wash with the lid closed at 1 foot range, 5 feet, 10 etc.Based on this video I am considering this GE model, I love the fact that you are a user select the water level the old fashion way as before vs this new crap today LOAD SENSE, it start agitating to determine the load size and it the mean time is moves clothes around with minimum water, as an engineer where is LOGIC here in people who came up with stupid feature.

How come on this model the agitator only spins in one direction every other rotation? How come it doesn’t agitate in both directions everytime like the slightly cheaper model that doesn’t have the extra options and auto soak? Not sure if it’s better this way or the other way, to me it seems like a pretty obvious answer that it’s better for it to agitate both ways.

This machine did handle it better than I expected, and like you I was a bit scared when the tub was like lifting up to the top cabinet! Not sure if its a feature on this machine or not but I'm surprised it didn't try to do some kind of auto balance correction, like a partial refill and agitate like some models do. Maybe its the whirlpool that does that I'm not sure.

We purchased this Maytag MVW7230Hw washer from Pochel’s in Tacoma, Washington. It was delivered and set up by the delivery person. We tried to do a load of laundry and the washer wouldn’t agitate. I took a video to show that the agitator pretty much just vibrated, and didn’t even disturb the small amount of suds that formed when the machine partially filled with water. I took the video to Pochels the next morning. They said they would gladly deliver another machine for only $100. I told them I wasn’t willing to pay an additional $100 to get a machine that worked when I had already paid over $1,000 for one that obviously didn’t work. The agitator doesn’t always work, the fill doesn’t always work, the agitator tries to dry clean the clothes with no water in the tub and the clothes on top don’t get clean.

@@tmr8193 My Speed Queen lasted 7 years. It took a lot of laundry loads. It ran like a champ! But I guess it had had enough with so many 12 hour washing days. It rusted out completely, motor oil draining, and water leaking out onto the floor. Never used fabric softener. Just detergent. Did clean it with Affresh. I don't know what happened. I guess it was just TOO MUCH laundry. Plus it was a 3.2 cu ft capacity. I guess too small for a family of 6.

Water pressure impacts the water level for this particular washer. I have cut water pressure on this washer and noticed this machine will start to wash with hardly any water in the the tub. Most electronic washers will through an error code if you have low water pressure. This machine has a pressure switch but is probably used for safety (over flow reasons).

Is it possible to just run a rinse and spin cycle with this machine and the 330 as well. I like to hand wash some items and then give them a quick spin if I'm in a hurry. Also what is the difference between the "deep fill" button and the "deep rinse" button on the two different models. Are they the same, but with different names and if I don't push it will I just get a spray rinse instead of the tub filling? Thanks again for all these awesome videos. I can't believe they exist. Thanks for getting back so quickly. Take your time. You're a busy guy running your own business and helping a bunch of youtubers on the side. I actually watched your water level test on the 330 after posting my question. We only have 5 PSI because we are on gravity feed. The manual I found online says the machine needs a minimum of 20 PSI. (The manual helped me understand the deep fill and deep rinse buttons too and another commentor mentioned using only the spin cycle so I guess the machine does that.) Hopefully, we can figure out how to run a pump to the new GE machine machine, but I might have to stick with my old Kenmore. I have a new question now too. The clutch broke a few weeks ago on the Kenmore. We replaced it, but it still isn't completely up to speed in the spin cycle. I am wondering if the basket drive was over stressed too. It runs well enough, but will I blow out the transmission running it with a worn basket drive or worn drive block. Thanks. I really appreciate your time. You deserve some kind of humanitarian award for helping explain this stuff to people before they invest $ on these expensive machines.

This machine will start washing even if there is not enough water in the tub due to low water pressure. Old school machines will start washing when the water level pressure switch was satisfied even it it took 24 hours to fill the tub. The new machines will give an error code if the the machine takes too long to fill. This machine does something I have never seen before. Instead of giving an error code, it starts to wash after a designated time. So I would not buy one if you have low water pressure. Deep rinse is used for rinses with a full tank of water, usually about 3/4 of a tank. Rinse with fabric softener is code for deep rinse on most machines, mostly used for those wanting to rinse their clothes properly. If you do not select deep rinse or rinse with fabric softener then the machine will do a spray rinse to simulate a full rinse. I am not sure what the difference is between the water level set for high and deep fill. I would use deep fill to be on the safe side. On your Kenmore, the basket drive may need to be replaced.

I'm not sure on this model, but other GE units water flowing in the tub will impact the final water level. Make sure you have adequate flow by comparing to the video and try the warm water setting to allow max flow rate. But, you should be able to argue the point because it is so new. You may want to experiment with different cycles and make sure the deep feel is selected.

I read some where that the person called GE and they told them to unplug it then plug back in and that should do it and they said that was unacceptable and returned the machine. I do not own one so I don't know but been watching tons of video's trying to decide on a washer.

I've owned this machine for about six months and have decided to get rid of it for this very reason. It is POOR at handling unbalanced loads. It vibrates out of place and I periodically have to reposition the washer. It is just LOUD too. I wanted to go with the new SQ because of previous ownership experience but after reading and watching reviews of it I've opted for the Maytag Commercial style top loader. I haven't yet received it. I hope it was a good purchase decision!

Bridget Love, be sure you have a heavy duty cycle or bulky items selected with load size set to max with the deep fill option selected. Also use the rinse for fabric softener option. If water is coming in too slow, then it may start washing without the necessary water. Do you have the same model?

Yeah. I would not recommend a washer that doesn’t detect an out of balance load. In this case, a smart washer, such as LG, would be better in this unbalanced situation. I get notified when mine is unbalanced, however that happened only once.
