    Does this imply the villains range should be strengthened on the river, since he has less ev than his opponents (given these constraints within the river situations)?

  • @mynameiskarl

    @mynameiskarl

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's a valid question, but I don't think this is implied. It's just part of the game. Some flop, turn & rivers are just worse for you and can leave you kind of capped. But that does not mean you need to slowplay the street before that to be uncapped. You try to maximize your overall EV. Putting money in on the earlier street (instead of slowplaying to not leave you with a capped range) will as a rule of thumb be the best play. Let's say you're in the BB vs a BTN open. On a AK3 flop, you'll be (kind of ) capped, as you don't have AA/KK/AK in the BB. An attentive BTN can take advantage of this and start betting big & polarized. But it's still in your own best interest to 3bet AK/KK/AA preflop. You want to build a pot with those hands. As a general rule, you just want to make sure your strongest hands get to play a bigger pot. When you check or call some of them, instead of bet or raising them, it's harder to build the same big pot you would get by fast playing. And a true GTO villain (or max exploiting villain) uses huge sizes to really punish capped ranges. Real villains will too often stick to 'regular' (= less than pot) bet sizes. So we need to worry even less about having a capped range. In one of my modules on Upswing Poker, I talk about the BTN pfr vs BB flat in an SRP spot. I talk about the check back range of BTN a bit and mention how it's protected by run out coverage (doing well on various turns and rivers) instead of checking back super strong hands on the flop. But for more info on that, i'm afraid you'll have to subscribe to the Upswing Lab. I do hope this answer clarified things a bit.

    @@mynameiskarl Thanks Fried. In you first lesson of overbetting "Building blocks" on the slide of starting with "Hero has 6 value combos & 6 bluffs" and you calculate the EV for different overbet size. If hero choose to use pot sized bet, he can have 6 value and 3 bluffs and I assume he will give up the rest 3 bluffs. Against the pot sized bet, the villain has to defend 50% of his bluff catcher. So the EV of this post size bet = 50%*(100+100)*6/9 (Villain call our nets EV) + 50%*(-100)*3/9 (Villain call our air EV) + 50% * 100 (Villain fold) = 100 I am not sure how to understand we win 75% and our EV is 75 here. Maybe I am missing something here?

  • @mynameiskarl

    @mynameiskarl

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@alexcui3500 What you calculated is the EV when you bet. When you bet, you win the full pot (on average), so EV when bet = 100. But in the example with 6 value combos & 6 bluffs, you only bet 9 combos of your 12. 3 times you check & give up with EV = 0. So overall EV for the spot = 9/12 * 100 + 3/12 * 0 = 75. Simply put: you bet 75% of the time (9/12). When you bet you win the full pot (100$). EV when you bet = $100. EV for the spot = $75 I hope that answers the question. ----------- In the future: Questions about the upswing course should go in the upswing fb group. Karl, if pot odds dictate hes calling 1/3 of the time, and MDF requires him to call 1/2 of the time to stop exploitation from bluffs, at what frequency will villain call? Im really confused on this point

  • @mynameiskarl

    @mynameiskarl

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey! Sounds weird, but pot odds on the call don't have any influence on the calling % of the bluff catching player in this toy game. It's only about MDF. From an exploitative angle: If the polarized player bluffs more than 1/3, when giving the bluff catching player 2-1 odds, the bluff catching player can call 100%. If he bluffs less, the bluff catching player can fold 100%. So at equilibrium, the bettor bluffs 1/3 times to make the bluff catching player indifferent with his whole range of bluff catchers. The pot odds don't influence the % of calls, they only influence the amount of bluffs the bettor bets. The bettor wants to bluff with such a frequency that the bluff catching player is indifferent between a bluff catch and a fold. The calling frequency is determined by the caller wanting to make the bettor indifferent between a bluff and a check back with his bluffs. The bettor gets 1-1 odds with a pot sized bet, which leads the caller to call 1/2 of the time.

    Not all bluff catchers are created equally. The nuts/air vs bluff catchers example is a strictly theoretical example. In real poker, you will have bluff catchers that block some part of villain's value bets (or unblock some bluffs). Because of this effect, they can be higher EV bluff catchers than other hands. Say villain bets KQ, AK, AA, KK for value on some river of a K high board. Your lower KX loses to all villain's value, but the K blocker makes it a better bluff catcher than others. so to play GTO in poker we need to know the aprox ranges of the villian? let's say that pio solver or pokersnowie sugguest to call 33% and fold 66%, so GTO strategy is done by assuming the villian percentage of bluffs and nuts, but if the opponent realized that and bet only with the nuts our past GTO strategy to fold 66% should be 100% so we are being can being exploited if villian knows our strategy?

    I have a quick question, I understand the point of this example - by balancing your betting range you maximize EV for your betting range. But that does include the 2 times you check back and give up. These two times you will net 0 EV each. Shouldn’t we trying to maximize the EV of our entire range and not just the betting range? By balancing - Only betting the 6/8 hands you win the pot (100$) 6/8 times most often. Where when you bet the whole 8/8 hands you net less EV on the betting range (75$), but you win 75$ 8/8 vs 100$ 6/8 which both equal 600$ each respectively. So basically I’m asking what the difference is? Any response/feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • @mynameiskarl

    @mynameiskarl

    5 жыл бұрын

    Betting balanced 6/8 or betting unbalanced (bluffing too much) 8/8 only nets the same EV if villain calls "GTO". But by betting 8/8, you open yourself up for being exploited. - Villain doesn't adjust => you get $600 - Villain can adjust by calling 100% and your EV drops to 4x +200 - 4x100 = $400 (You can of course readjust to exploit villain's exploit. GTO is the equilibrium solution. You can deviate if you have a good enough read on villain's leaks / deviations form GTO to extract more EV than at equilibrium) The point of GTO is to capture your fair share of the pot, maximize the minimum amount of chips you win, no matter what villain's response is. By betting GTO in the example, you always get your $600. Villain can't do anything about it. Does this answer your question?

    I've watched a lot of videos trying to explain this same theory; nice job on that, you did better than the majority of what I've seen. This example is great, but how do I utilize it to my own game. The first time I read about the GTO play and tried to apply it to my play I was very lost. A lot of factors occur during a session and I rarely get to the same spot. For example I may only get to two or 3 half stack sized pots by the river in a cash game. The way I get there could be different each time (position changes, I would treat AA different than A3 (which is also the nuts here)). I'm confused on how to utilize this math in a realistic session of poker. Often times I don't play against the same people.

  • @mynameiskarl

    @mynameiskarl

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Your question is very valid & GTO is a pretty deep topic and I'll likely explore it more in future videos. One way lessons from this toy game can be (naively?) used in real spots, is with the concept of MDF or minimum defense frequency (also known as "1 - alpha" referring to the book "Mathematics of Poker"). In the toy game example, villain faced a pot sized bet. To make hero indifferent for bluffing or not, villain calls 50% of the time. This would be his "MDF". If villain calls less often, hero makes profit on his bluffs and will just always bluff. You can use the same thought process to find calling frequencies for different bet sizes. If hero bets 1/2 pot on the river, he gets 2 to 1 on his bluff => needs to work 1/3rd of the time to break even. Villain's MDF now increases to 66% (or 2/3) instead of 50%. So when you face a river bet vs a BALANCED RANGE: you can think about which hands you end up with in that spot, what your range looks like there... and then try to defend with the top x % to meet MDF. __________________________________________________________________ I wrote "naively?" in the beginning, as this MDF concept is only 100% correct in the toy game, and just more of a guideline for real hands. Misapplication of MDF (and misunderstanding of GTO) starts happening when a player tries to defend MDF in every single part of the game tree. In the toy game, bluffs have 0% equity. In real hands and on earlier streets, bluffs will have some equity. GTO isn't about MDF, GTO is about the indifference principle. In the toy game, villain defends GTO by defending MDF. I also put BALANCED RANGE in caps, as this is very important. You will be able to identify spots where your opponent is just drastically under bluffing. River spots where all the draws came in for example. If your opponent needs to put in extra work to show up with enough bluffs on a certain runout (for example bluff with hands that have a pair, hands that have showdown value), he's likely not bluffing enough, doesn't have a balanced range, and you can do better than calling a "GTO" calling range. GTO isn't about defending an equal amount on every flop, turn and river either. Some flops or better for you, some are worse. Some turn & river combo's are better for you, some are worse. You try to defend enough ON AVERAGE.

    Im confused about one thing: At 8:20 you say that Hero would win 100 on average if he would bet his entire range, but he has to check 2 combos of 72 to be balanced. But even if he bets all his combos it's still only 75$ or what am I missing? 4 x AA = 150 x 4 = 600 + 4 x 72 = 4 x 0. 600+0 / 8 = 75

  • @mynameiskarl

    @mynameiskarl

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey, what I'm trying to say there is: WHEN hero gets to bet a perfectly polarized, balanced range, he wins the full pot on average. But to stay balanced, hero can only bet 6 out of 8 times. So 6 times hero wins the full pot on average : (4 x 150 + 2 x 0)/6 = 100 And 2 times hero checks back and loses. So the overall hero EV = 600/8 = 75 The EV when hero bets = 600/6 = 100
