@@robbie4339 That was historically only for movies, until 2012 / 2013 games that were considered equivalent to an R18+ movie were refused classification (making them unsellable in retail stores and thus essentially banned). I'm not exactly sure why this was, perhaps because games we're considered a kid's thing so the idea of an R18+ game was in-turn considered inappropriate / unnecessary or that a games were "worse" than movies due to the player interaction and direct choice in the displayed violent, criminal sexual, etc. actions

​@@NationalPepper I was not born in Australia but i have lived here 24 years now and i think It's actually pretty relevant because the whole basis of this video is directly analyzing censorship in Australia and If you're talking about GTA IV while trying to state facts and providing information based on your research then stating that Australia does not currently have an R18 rating when it currently does. I would think that would be pretty relevant to providing an accurate correct analysis on censorship which is the whole point to this video. Also GTA IV was the not the reason for the implementation of R18 here it added fuel to the fire sure but so did plenty of other games not just GTA IV The fact that they submitted a censored version for the game only to then submit the uncut version later on and that passing the classification only goes to show the game was not all that shocking and Rockstars original censored first submission of the game was simply down to their ( Rockstars ) own concern that the game not be delayed in Australia for whatever reason. Officials were already lobbying for the introduction of the R18 years and years before GTA IV even existed. GTA IV just simply added fuel to the fire to update the previous outdated legislation ( which was from 1992 and 1995 ) but did not cause the direct change. As that only happened 4 years later. Meaning the calls for the review into the R18 legislation had been accumulating years before GTA IV and was still accumulating years after until finally reaching a point in June 2012 after dozens and dozens of others games and lobbying to open a review into the legislation of R18 for games. This finally was approved with the first R18 here being Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge. The reason for the introduction of the R18 here in Australia was simply that they finally opened a review into the rating classification legislation with open public submissions which 98 per cent were in favor of the introduction of such a R18 category. Not GTA IV directly that was simply one of the many games that added fuel to the fire. @@ruslankirichenko8588 The main idea of this video was to show these changes in GTA IV and not to talk much about their backstory and overall situation in AU. The backstory was added just to point at R*'s stupid decision in the past. In other words, I am talking here about 2008-2009 or a one year period. 0:55 "An absence of 18+ rating", was said as it was written in "The Age", but without "by the way". 5:04 Was said in the past tense to point that it was the main reason why R* decided to make these cuts. You can see the same idea in the background. I usually leave some clues or sources in the background while narrator talks about something important. So yeah, since I talked about 1 year period, I decided not to talk about R+18 rating at all. Mainly, as I thought, it wasn't so relevant and it didn't affect GTA IV at all. I just didn't know how to link it with the video, so I didn't really investigate it. Maybe someone didn't get it or maybe I did it wrong..... maybe I should have avoided direct quotation from the source. Dunno.

i bought my gta 4 copy in a pawn shop here in australia for $15 and the only thing that’s censored is the “lady’s of the night” camera angle but blood stained clothes and pools of blood after a headshot are still in the game itself

The nightmare for developers is far from over. There are still a whole bunch of things that can and will get your game totally banned in Australia even with the R18+ rating. Plus there are retailers who wont sell R18+ games and platforms (consoles and digital storefronts) that wont allow R18+ games on there.

@@altimagedesign8323 A short time after release of the retail version, R* released a patch for both PS3 and X360 to basically "Uncut" the game again. As the game only needed to be cut initially to pass classification. The classification board in Australia doesn't count DLC or patches as content that needs to be rated so it slipped straight through and everyone connected to the net suddenly had the uncut version of the game.

The fucked up thing is - even though we have an 18+ rating in Australia, games still get banned/refused for sale The whole reason Australian gamers fought for an 18+ was to avoid banned games, and we still got them Hotline Miami 2 was one that got banned which I was super keen for, but there have been several others since 2013 when the rating was introduced

One thing I noticed on mine; the Ushanka Hat, I'm pretty sure it's called the Winter Hat in game that you can buy at the Russian shop, doesn't have the USSR pin on the front but everything else is the same as the American version.

I remember it was a big talking point here in Australia as to whether it was going to be censored or not, one of the bigger talking points was the fixed camera with prostitutes. But this was fixed in the PC version of the game which I believe was uncensored. I'm glad we now have a R18+ rating here in Australia now. Thanks for the video Vadim and as always brilliant narration Swegta. Edit: A bit off topic but if you want to know more about where censorship in Australia. Saints Row 4 was refused classification even after the R18+ rating was introduced for using an alien anal probe that was edited out of the Australian version. I hope this gives you some of an idea of how bad the ACB (Australian Classification Board) can be at times :)

Australia has an R18+ rating now thanks to the release of GTA V! It needed to comply with an R18+ rating to be sold in Australia, it was also temporarily banned from some stores, before being recensored and re released.

Australia does have an AO rating (R18+), however company’s try not too get this rating as it is not sold in most shops and requires the presentation of photo ID for purchase

After checking some things out, so what happened was Australia received their own product code with PS3 (BLES-00258) which later got a patch for it and also the standard European game (BLES-00229) was released as well - if I got the end right. Do not have internet to patch BLES-00258, still receive censors - naturally - if that's the case kek. Would be nice if some specifics would be given out as "how to recognize", such as those product codes since Australians usually receive their own packaging with stuff like some regions in Europe do which do still have the same internal ID. This stuff would really help those who want to avoid these things by making it a bit easier.

Even with those "minor" changes im really glad ive only played the uncensored version.

I have Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition for my PS3 and i still play it.

the Australian classification board (ACB) has become more benevolent in recent years, they implemented the R18+ rating for video games in 2013 and therefore subsequent R* releases such as GTA V were never censored for Australia (RDR2 only received an MA15+ for some reason, despite being way more gruesome than GTA V from what I've seen), and even unbanned Manhunt (though Manhunt 2 is still banned)

hahaha i bought a copy in 2008, had none of these issues, lost the copy and then bought another in 2013 and still had no issues. in between that i played on friends' copies and had no problems whatsoever. judging from other comments and experience over the years it seems this censorship is extremely rare or even non existent. it was an interesting video though so thanks for trying

The ACB does include an R18+ rating now. It was introduced in 2013, GTA V received the rating.

In america they try not to get an Ao (adults only) rating meanwhile in Europe and any country with PEGI you can't buy it if you are under 18. And then Australia comes in without a 17+/18+ rating until 2012.

We do have an R18+ rating now & have had it for a while. But at the time of GTA IV's release we did not.

Not sure if it was different between consoles but my entire time playing GTA IV from 2008 - 2014 I had the pools of blood and the blood stains on characters and these were never patched out.

All my PC versions are the uncensored version thankfully going back all the way to the old London days

Oddly enough i live in Australia and own the uncut version which was bought in my hometown and has none of the cuts mentioned in the video.

As an australian i can say that some of this is true the blood pool does in fact still exist in australia as well as the footprints and as for the camrea fixing behind the car to turn you away from the "action" well im not 100% about that because i havent done that yet

MA15+ games in Australia are R16 in NZ. Slight annoyance I discovered after moving between the countries at 15yrs.
