Interesting and informative vid. I have a 2016 GT 350. I purchased the car used with a little more than two thousand miles on it. I now have close to 23K miles and my oil consumption is moderate. I use this vehicle as a daily driver. I run Mobile 5-50W. I check my oil level regularly based on comments similar to what you state in your video. However, I must be lucky because I have never added a quart of new oil every 500 miles since owning the car. Maybe every few thousand at best. This car has not been tracked so maybe that makes a big difference. My chassis was number 13 off the line so I had to get an early version of the Gen 1 Voodoo motor. Thanks again for your excellent feedback.

Good info. How about the oil filter differences? Sometime during the 2017 model year they went to a paper cartridge filter instead of a standard type oil filter. Also for '17 and earlier models with oil coolers, there was a recall for the oil cooler lines. Do you see much oil in the left side catch can? I get oil only in my right side can, but not much probably because of the low miles. One more thing, the gears in the stock oil pump are supposedly prone to cracking/failure. FORD PERFORMANCE has billet gears, but it isn't an easy job.

I got a 2016 avalanche grey 350 and another big problem with the gen1s was, the oil filter would come loose on its own. It would back its self our of the threads and yes this happen to me. @@NanuGarage wow I’d say that’s kind of a lot, one quart and a half every 500? For what I’ve seen it is a hit or miss type of deal with these engines, personally I don’t know anyone with any oil consumptions, have a friend who has a 2017 pro charged 2017 GT350 Gen 1 at a 900hp no issues with his engine yet, (stock engine) actually he has a KZread channel it’s called prochargedbeast if I recall right. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oI5omLOxiKTak6Q.html

Very informative thank you… be careful tho … my 2017 ran great pulls hard no issue I only noticed very faint black smoke clouds at high rpms and I only have 10,900 miles on it currently and I was consuming 2-3 quarts every 1000 miles car has never been tracked just street driven all original tires from 2017 and oil changed by Ford every 1,500 miles ..so meaning car hasn’t been beat on and Ford bore scoped my block by pulling the plugs and found cylinder wall scratching and 4 out of 8 cylinders failed compression due to ring failure and scratching of the cylinder walls …it’s currently getting a gen 2 motor … again car ran completely fine …. After I bought it off the showroom floor and put 2000 miles on it roughly in the year of 2018 I finally heard the famous tick sound aka piston slap at the first 10 mins of warm up and Ford said that sound was normal at the time but obviously it was not … gen one motor is over priced junk … your car may sound and perform normal but there is a issue … again I was 2-3 quarts a 1000 miles daily driving … anything over a half of quart in 500 miles daily driving take it in and have them bore scope your cylinders

As long as you have powertrain warranty you are fine. If you consume more than 1 quart per 500 miles ford will have you run a oil consumption test and and when they see how much your engine consumes you will be eligible for a Gen 2 motor.

Unfortunately not. 2019-2020 has the gen 2 motors. Some 2017's and all 18-20's however have the new oil filter design. They changed it from the metal canister filter to a plastic one that won't vibrate off or be damaged during removal.

The reason for oil consumption has everything to do with smog laws. Sending oil back into the crankcase via the pcv causes oil in the motor to get very frothy. Frothy oil sticks to low tension rings. Next time around, you have even frothier oil sticking to already stuck rings. This is what causes the the consumption to get worse over time. The fix is a catch can. Stop letting the oil get fed back into the crank case. Ford knows this, and that's why they sell catch cans that fit perfectly on our cars. The reason they don't come installed, SMOG LAWS! So yes, clean the carbon from your rings, install catch cans, and pay attention to your oil levels. Hopefully you haven't already been tricked into thinking gen.2 is a better thing for your car. Matching numbers are what matters.

God damn will this gen 1 gen 2 shit ever stop. Even gen 2 has a failure rate. Stop the bs. The reason and only reason of a gen 2 is because the gt500 predator came along. If the gt500 never came along we wouldn’t see a new block, revised heads etc. many many many more people have gen 1 with zero issues. There are way more gen 1 motors out there than gen 2. And yes even gen 2 motors have blown up and have oil issues.

Rings in the 2015 to 2017 were looser. In 2018 Ford changed the rings to be tighter and burn less oil. In 2019 and 20 got the gen 2 block but people forget that in 2018 they got the tighter rings which burns less oil. Its not a Gen 1 to Gen 2 thing that fixed it. It was 2018.

  • @poopscooper5038

The Gen 2 block was only used because of the Gt 500. It was saved on production costs why it was done. Made no sense to have two blocks...it wasnt NOT a reliability issue. To many regurgitated "experts" spewing their knowledge they don't have. Ford doesn't even acknowledge a Gen 1 or Gen 2 difference
