My GT350's Engine BLEW UP with 8,400 Miles **Here's What Happened Next...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My 2017 Shelby GT350 has a blown engine with only 8,400 miles. I had just finished a ton of prep on my GT350 to prepare for my first big day out at the track. After completing the final step, on my way home with my buddy Scott the engine decided to let go from what I'm hearing is likely a spun bearing. This is becoming a more apparent/common issue with this cars and I would be scared to own one of these cars out of warranty.

My 2017 GT350R motor blew last November with 8200 miles, and Ford replaced the engine. I'm keeping it, but then I don't think I can find a comparable track toy that fits my budget. Hoping for the best re: the new engine. I have not pursued an extended warranty, but will be interested in your experience if you go that route. Good luck with your new motor and thanks for your content!

Glad to see Ford did the right thing by you Jeff. All comes down to weighing the pleasure from owning an incredible performer against the concern for another failure combined with the likelihood your asset is depreciating way faster than the GT350’s we’re supposed to. I was crushed when I let go of my perfect ‘16 Track Pack 350. I was getting closer to end of warranty period and witnessing the reality that it wasn’t an easy sell - clearly the perception of the car due to longevity concerns has taken a toll on the values. I bailed on what was supposed to be my never gonna sell it dream car. Sucks because it truly was the most unique and fun car I’ve ever driven. Maybe the ‘19 motor is better ... personally I wouldn’t bet on that. Good luck with your decision.

ZL1 1LE is still the most badass of the pony cars. I have yet to see the GT500 beat it on a road course (maybe it will on a longer track). I am a chevy guy, so this next comment might seem biased, but I am not trying to be. I don't think GM cars are perfect, they have issues and make mistakes. But most of the GM stuff is either small little things, or many people might have a big issue but not everyone. Ford on the other hand may have less small issues, but when Ford has issues, they are apocalyptic. Like, if you have the car that has the issues, you WILL have it happen to you. Case in point, 6.0 diesel, powershift dual clutch trans, Focus RS, 5.4 3V issues etc. I do like the new mustang, GT350 is a cool car, but there has been way to many videos like this one and it would scare me away. Also Ford has been pretty bad about trying to get out of their responsibility when making a mistake.

Long comment ahead Aug 1st I purchased a used 2017 350 with 20k miles and had the engine blow the next day because the dealership didn’t tighten the oil filter properly. Had to lawyer up to get a new engine. Got the car back at the end of October and had it for 3 weeks when the 2nd motor blew up on me after only 1300 miles. Had it towed to Ford for them to fly out a tech to check out the motor and he confirmed that it was indeed a part failure... on a brand NEW crate motor with 1300 miles. I just picked up my car today and am now on my 3rd motor. My plan? To keep the vehicle until the new Mach 1 drops for the 2021 model year then I’m trading her in with a quickness. Sounds like you got the Gen 2 motor in yours, Jeff and thats freaking awesome! I’m beyond jealous. For you I’d say hang onto it and see how it plays out for you in terms of reliability but I can definitely understand you losing confidence in the car. I’m in the same boat! The car is occasionally driven, never tracked, and had scouring on the #5 and #7 cylinder walls, along with low compression. He was burning apx. 4 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. After the necessary diagnosis and back and forth with the dealer, who actually made the process as painless as possible, his engine was replaced. He's now going through the 500-1000 mile break-in period.

I think the 2019 engine should be better based on the changes Ford made. If I recall the block has been recast with a better cooling jacket (better passages for the heads as well), stronger exhaust valves springs, new head gaskets, I-beam connecting rods to strengthen the bottom end. I don't believe Ford has confirmed any of this but this info was gathered from a couple of the aftermarket tuners. Most of this came from the GT500 engine program. A large flat plane crank motor like this is a little unusual, most are smaller displacements because of the increased vibration you get with a flat plane crank. I don't think I would have any issue buying a 2019, but I would definitely not buy anything older. As for an extended warranty I would push for it, doesn't hurt to ask.

Here's my take on this, I was a Service Manager at a Dealership and you can be happy for the new engine or pissed that it blew up and now it's not a numbers matching car. If you are a collector of car's then you could be pissed. However Ford isn't obligated to do anything above replacing the failed part, and even tho you got a new engine Ford is only obligated to warrant the new engine for the original warranty period. So if you did get Ford to extend the warranty period then you are ahead, if you bought the car for a collectors collection then you could fight Ford to buy the car back but, if they did do that and not fight you you would be lucky. It takes a lot of time and luck for that to happen. Ican only speak for myself" I would be happy with the new motor, and be happier that I can enjoy my GT-350.

I plan on getting an extended warranty on my 2017. I think it is luck of the draw with these. Only 3% have had issues apparently but the ones that do get a lot of attention. So it seems to the public these engines have issues when in fact it’s about the same % as the other mustangs and other manufacturers. I eat about 1 qt of oil every 1000 mikes and pushing 9k on the odometer now. Which in this engine I find acceptable for the type of driving I do. At the track attack event we asked them. How many motors they have replaced, only one and 2 clutches (which I was surprised only 2 lol) the cars never had license plates on them and live at the track. The car I drove had 11k miles on it of pure track abuse. I drove that car harder than I have ever driven mine haha. The instructors literally told us to drive them as hard as we could and to try and break them. After that day I had more confidence in my 350 to hold up.

None matching numbers definitely hurts the resale value long term but it all depends on what are your long term plans with the car. I would sell and get all the money out of it now. Being it’s only 8k mileage car. Beautiful car either way. Good luck. 👍

I LOVE these GT350s... test drove one before I got my Type R (but it didn't really count as a test drive, the sales person didn't even let me wind the car out and I didn't even get to take any corners so I couldn't really experience it). Was looking at used GT350s but now I am afraid. It is a shame because this is the coolest American car to come out since the Dodge VIper ACR, I like the GT350s even more than the new C8s... it is just a master class in performance, fast loud and savage. I'm sad that these motors are having issues, I still think these are incredible cars, I just don't know the root cause of the engine failures. One thing I would look into is a maybe a dry sump oiling system, but that will surely void a warranty. I am very surprised that Ford did not include a dry sump in this car, a car that revs this high and can pull such high G's should have one by default.

In 2009 i bought a new GT-500.It had four tsb's on the clutch and mine went out. They used ceramic/metallic material which wouldn't hold up,no matter how you drove it.My dealer was excellent on the repair and didn't cost me anything for the repair. Some dealers were jerks about it and wouldn't repair it for free and that was a $3000.00 fix.Next years model they went back to organic material,it didn't grab well but lasted longer. Then there was the hood corrosion issues(aluminum),that Ford knew about, for over ten years.Mine did it twice.Once in warranty the other one out of warranty.I had to fight with Ford because they didn't want to cover it.The best i could get was I pay a third,Dealer pay a third and Ford paid a third(dealer shouldn't have to pay anything). The body man at the dealership was honest(i've known him for years) said we can repair it but it won't stay that way.At that point i would do anything to get rid of the car and wound up trading it for a used 2008 Corvette that had 6600 miles on it,in mint condition and i still have it today and not looking back. I might add that when my Dad passed away,he left me a 2009 Ford Taurus which has had a few issues but has been a much better car than the GT-500 was.

Great vlog, 2017 stang with a 2019 stang engine? If you decide to keep it you would need two things. 1st. trust on new motor needs to be earned so go have fun and pull one strong pull/ track run while under warranty. 2nd, make sure if you get a extended warranty from Ford, ( in writing) make sure that if engine fails again- they will cover the 2019 engine and not replace it with a 2017 engine. If you decide to let go of stang to avoid a headache and loss, sell for top dollar as a 2019 engine was installed.✌

Nice post. Sorry your engine grenaded. I see some posts regarding not wanting to own a car you're afraid to mod. There's no need to mod these cars, IMO. 526HP is darn good and these cars have terrific balance on the track. I hit speeds of 150MPH at VIR. I have zero complaints. Did Ford check the OPG by chance to see if they were cracked ? I have a theory and am having a difficult time proving it. Good luck with your new engine.

Right at the beginning you stated they looked to see if it was tuned. Tuning voids the engine warranty! I just had a dealer try to sell me an 18 they claimed was certified pre owned. Opened the hood and saw the JLT intake. Tuner was in the trunk. Salesman tried to tell me the car would have a warranty even after I called Ford corporate and was told the car was NOT certified and COULD NOT be certified. On the other side, Ford is a business and they're not going to pay big $$$ for one of these engines if they don't have to
