GSU Men's Choir sings "The Awakening" - Joseph M. Martin

Музыка

Georgia State Men's Chorus
Patrick K. Freer, conductor
Daniel Solberg, piano
THE AWAKENING, composed in 1995, is one of those pieces that became instantly famous. Its long vocal lines, text painting and stepwise voice leading assist singers in negotiating the physical aspects of vocal production... and it's great fun to sing!

I don't understand why we even bother anymore. There's no hope of ever surpassing the glorious perfection that is "The Awakening". Art has reached its limit. You can all go home now.

Can we all appreciate their diction when they sing "awake, awake" when they actually complete the word and you hear the k... this is definitely one of my favorite pieces of choral music .

This song reminds me of my choir director and brings me to tears every single time i hear it because the memory of him is so prominent. He made me the man I am today.

Joseph Martin composed this piece in honor of his choir teacher who was murdered the day before a concert. Martin was to be the accompanying as a high schooler. This piece most definitely goes out to finding and holding on to music throughout hardship.

I had the honor of performing this piece in 2007 at high school All State -- under the baton of the author Joseph Martin. A fantastic, very emotional experience, I can tell you that. Without a doubt the most favored memory of my choral career.

I love the blend. From my experience, most choruses have trouble with the mix between first and second tenors, but you guys rocked it.

This song is just absolutely wonderful.. I am currently in a high school a cappella and last april we went to carnegie hall to perform..sadly we didnt do this piece but we did sang a song called jen te le moulin and i think we did good..in my opinion i think the tenor part was a bit off but overall the song is great.

My high school choir is doing this now for UIL. Love the awaKE endings. If there is one criticism I can make it would be the choir choir is staccato when doing their consonants. Also that ending was borderline “Broadway style” (I’m not sure if everyone calls it that, but that’s what my choir director calls when you take a breath before the very last note of the song and leave a GAINT break between the second to last and last notes)

Thank you to CuteZeta1920, and the reason we didn't do the SILENT was because someone would always chuckle and ruin it so he decided to just take it all together.

Im so glad I seen this comment.....i couldnt be the only one to hear that there is no differentiating in parts.....also no difference in the volume of the piece. Dont get me wrong....it sounds beautiful but of what is expected of a high schools mens chorus. Not a bad thing...just it is what it is. Good rich tone tho!

They need more dramatic dynamics. They sound like they are trapped in a box dynamic wise. They need to over emphasize their dynamics to get the full emotional effect of the music. Their consonants and vowel shape is brilliant. Need more bass entrance, a little less tenor overall. Otherwise, a decent mens chorus.

Wow im impressed. If I can say just a few things to improve on. Your overall sound as a choir is very good, however your attacks and releases were, at times, not entirely together. Also when I sing, (especially this song) i get very emotional and i think showing a little emotion when singing is important. Your diction was very impressive so keep that up. Overall a very great performance. Thank you for sharing!!
