I was part of a choral group that performed this song a bit over 20 years ago and it is still, by far, my favorite piece that I have ever performed.

I sang this in high school we LOVE it. And we love to sing "awake, awAKEEE" to each other when we get distracted. I'm singing it again as an adult and still hits just like it did before

I first heard/sang this song in the early 2000's. It remains my favorite song to this day - not just to sing, not even to "hear", but to experience. I've heard a lot of incredibly talented performances over the decades but this song still stands above them all. Thank you for this piece and all the range of emotions that you brought out in it.

My women’s choir is singing this piece virtually this spring and it’s so perfect to give us hope to sing together again. I get choked up every time I sing it. What a moving story, thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your work. This song brought tears to my eyes. It resonated with me so much so that measures 98 and 99 are tattooed on my arm with the lyrics. I learned this song in 10th grade. I am 37 and a teacher and this song still holds profound significance in my life. God bless you, sir.

You knew me by a different name Back Then. I heard this and sight read it at Music in the Mountains. I remember being OK with it until Part 3. "Let music never die in me" choked me up and the joy of the charge, "Let music live!" has remained an inspiration through the years. I've directed this inspired work many times since, whether for our own chorus or for festivals. I'm told that I smile a lot while directing, but never so much as when that beautiful melody and harmony take over at the end. The voices coming directly at me, the words inspiring us all. Thank you, Joe.

Over 20 years ago, I heard the TX state TTBB choir perform this. It was the first song that broke through the unfeeling numb walls of my trauma filled heart. It made me feel again. Feeling the reverberation through the room, I had to sit due to the overwhelming landslide of emotions. I sat and wept. At that point. I had not shed tears in over 5 years. I had not felt enough emotion in years to be able to smile, let alone weep tears of joy. Then, and still, when I hear this sung, tears stream down my face for how beautiful this music is. Thank you for sharing your song! It changed my life!

I never took choir in high school or college. I never learned this piece until I was a part of an adult choir. It’s wonderful to hear what he had to say, what inspired him, and the joy he felt knowing that his work was being used as a teaching piece and to further music education. Personally, I recently used this song to minister to a friend who has experience many years of things in her life that have kept her in despair. This song has the capacity to share God’s promise and hope that death has already been defeated and that with God, life springs from death.

The TTBB version sang as a young man was my FAVORITE choral piece, the combined high school male choirs of my school district CCISD (corpus christi texas) performed this for our school board to get them to not cut the music programs back in 1998/1999

@Jason Tramm I am always amazed that districts will spend 90% of their budgets on sports which benefits MAYBE 5-10% of the entire student population while the music and arts programs often give a better future for 25-30% of student body into adulthood since music and arts can translate to possible careers while only 1% of student athletes get scholarships or even go professional

I first sang "The Awakening" in 8th grade choir and it quickly found a special place in my heart as one of my all time favorite choir pieces. It wasn't until 10 years later this year at Phi Mu Alpha's 57th National Convention that I had the opportunity to sing this wonderful piece again in the Men of Song Chorus. After everything that has happened over the past 10 years, the meaning of the Awakening has only become more profound. I am grateful for this song that has brought me and thousands of other people across the world joy and hope in difficult times.
