GSC 6.5L diesel DS4 injection pump replacement and passenger valve cover re seal.

This video is a continuation/addition to the original injection pump replacement video.
In this video I explain replacing the passenger valve cover on Casper my trusty 6.5 diesel due to a large leak. During that time I also replaced the weak injection pump as well.
Hope this video helps other owners out!

Thank you for video. My 1993 has 151 thousand miles on it and I've replaced many new parts on it but the injection pump install is above my skill level. Like I said I've taken it to a mechanic twice and he never repaired it right. Thanks again.

Great video! I’ve pretty much re worked everything on my 6.5 recently and am having issues with the timing on the injection pump. Do you have any tips or pointers using the tech 2 scanner? We have replaced everything from the inline fuel pump, to injectors, complete overhaul on cooling system, intake, turbo etc. and we are hung up with this skip, rough idle, exhaust smoke. According to the scanner the unit is too far advanced. We have moved the pump towards passenger side, towards driver side with the proper tools and get no change on the scanner after doing so.

You have to force a TDCO relearn and set it to -0.5 to -0.9 by moving the pump and adjusting time via the scanner relearn while the engine is at temp. I don’t have a good video of that unfortunately since it’s a harder process to film when trying to be in three places at once.

Another great video boss. I installed a champion dual 16" electric fan in my 6.5 , flushed coolant and all new stuff with 180. Truck is fine on straight road with or without camper but going thru mountain passes, starts to get really hot. Quite frustrating what next to do. I thinking of removing trans cooling and running a second trans cooler, removing it from radiator if that help both trans and water coolant. What do you think from your experience

Good video… just recently install the injector pump on my 1999 6.5 and having trouble getting it started. Anticipated that you would cover the proper bleeding process. What I’m finding is that there is good flow from the fuel canister and good flow from the return side of the injector pump, but after cracking cylinders 1 through 7 and cylinder 2, little to no fuel appearing. Any advise? Keep up the good work.

If you are having minimal flow there is a good chance you have a PMD issue or it is far enough out of time that it isn’t firing off completely.

I’m looking at a 95 right now. I want it for a daily driver and I would like to make over 300hp. What’s the best turbo for this and what is the limit of the stock injection pump? thanks!

  • @gingersnapcustoms

If you want it as a reliable daily the most I would do is a Quadstar tune. Fass. HX35/Super54 from Quadstar. 4” exhaust. Upper intake upgrade. Fluid damper and oil cooler lines. This makes 285-300 based on ET slips/weights and has been reliable but the fuel economy suffers from it. The limits on a 95 is about 285 at the wheels and it would last a long time like that.

@@SnackyPaper Quadstar tuning. You’ll have about $5500-7k into everything they require you to have before you can run that pump. Better off doing a water to air intercooler. I’m going LB7 duramax powertrain swap because I’ve found 6.5s are not the happiest above 300 horse.

Hi GSC, I owned my 2000 GMC 1 ton dually with 6.5td for almost 10 years. I had to change out my lift pump again, 3rd time. But now I can't figure out WTF is going on. When I'm waiting for glow cycle, lift pump primes, ticks away and I start it up. Starts fine. But when I shut it down I don't hear it , it use to run for approx. 2-3 seconds after turning off. When running and opening up T-valve it pisses like a racehorse and doesn't skip a beat. I'm worried that I'll burn out my injection pump if it's not running when it's suppose to. I'm on a very limited budget and been wrenching on my own vehicles for 35+ years, but can't figure this out. New fuel filter and ignition switch after this problem, but no luck. And old fuel filter only had 10,000 kms on it, looked almost like new. As far as I know, my OPS on a 2000 6.5 isn't connected to lift pump and is controlled by ECM, is that right? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. PS. Thanks for all the videos to keep our 6.5 running long and strong..lol!

The OPS does affect the lift pump on all 6.5s. You can also check the fuse block and make sure nothing is blown. It’s definitely a good idea to order the relay harness from Quadstar or Leroy diesel to make sure you don’t run into a powerless lift pump down the road.

Make sure none of the main caps didn’t end up on backwards. This was a topic in the forums forever ago and I would have to find the write up. It basically came down to putting your bearings in. Timing set on. Balancer on and then re checking that surface. Also make sure the mains aren’t cracked and causing the crank to move.
