I said I can sympathize, doesn't mean I agree or am equating the marginalization subcultures face with minorities. Also. Cultural appropriation is definitely more of an injustice when the culture in question is an "oppressed" group, but that doesn't define the term. It's still cultural appropriation when non-christian asians wear crucifixes as accessories, for example.

Guys guys guys guys, calm your shit. First off, even if Smells Like Teen Spirit is the only Nirvana song she knows, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. She never said she loved the band and knew all their songs, she just used it because it was very popular among Grunge people. She also never said she was grunge, this is only a grunge inspired tutorial, she makes tons of tutorials for tons of different looks. She never claimed to be anything, and it's not bad if maybe she doesn't know Nirvana, or to some of you "real grunge people don't wear makeup" or something stupid like that, she has nothing to be ashamed of. She was only making a tutorial on what her idea of grunge is, and in my opinion she rocked it, and if you have some kind of complain similar to to the ones I listed then all you are doing is making real grunge people look bad. It's about accepting your flaws and embracing your ugliness. This generation doesn't have that mindset, so it's disingenuous, and it's exploitation. It's also about politics, and being anti establishment, and non conformity. For women, the girl in the video, it's not original grunge, but it's taking bits of the Kinderwhore look which is a part of the Grunge look as well. In that case, the lipstick shouldn't have any black in it; it has to be extra red, like vampire red. And don't put anything in your hair to make it look dirty. You should only wash your hair once every two weeks. But that's what I mean. Kids today could never commit to that.

Gene Kelly Thanks for the tips. My scalp gets very greasy and itchy beyond 4 days so that part would be out, but I think there are ways to mimic the grungy hair look.

I think a "grunge" look would be almost no makeup. The whole point is not caring. If she had stopped after the first eyeshadow (camel) and the first lipbalm, I think it'd look more "grunge". If it were me (and yes, I know it's not me), I'd put on a base and throw on some dark eyeliner and smudge it around a little. Add a flannel shirt, old band t-shirt, jeans and converse sneakers or beat up boots, don't shower for two or three days, and that's basically the grunge look I know and love. The lip color in particular is so dark. It's more Halloween-y than grunge when all's said and done. Anyway, I like the look. Just don't think it's "grunge".

Smells like Teen Spirit was a hit from the nineties and the classic embodiment of the grunge era. So it makes sense that she used this song. Fact time!: Kurt didn't know that Teen Spirit was a deodorant that his GF at the time used when his friends spray painted on his wall Smells like Teen Spirit. He thought that it meant actual spirit and rebellion within teens. After the song was released sells of the deodorant skyrocketed.

Actually, blush was not a part of the look. Only some smudged eyeliner, mascara and lipstick (and a bit of foundation of course). Everything else is extra. Also, lipstick was not that glossy.

I love the grunge voice. So sick, strong, fierce, & lively.

To everyone saying "oh the only nirvana song you know is smells like teen spirit." Michelle also isn't really into this style of music so this is probably the only song that came to mind, besides smells like teen spirit is an awesome song! But all of "those people" are making it a bad thing to like it.

Even though I don't listen to grunge, this outfit is really fashionable !

Chokers, no. Flannels yes. Flannels have always been grunge. But not the small, tight flannels that kids wear today. These are the large, oversized, XXXL flannels. The flannels around the waist trend was created in the grunge movement two decades ago. Flannels were not popular before Grunge. Chokers are just a 90's trend in general. It's not oriented to Grunge.

I think the uneven outlining is due to the lipbalm that she applied earlier. If you use a colored lipbalm, you should remove it or at least make the outlining of the balm as smooth as the lipstick so it doesn't show :)

That's also possible. Sometimes they apply a lipbalm for moisturizing and then remove it right before the lipstick is applied. But I think the entire video was for advertisement.

I think Michelle Phan is the queen of makeup DIY looks, she's amazingly successful and even though she stopped producing makeup tutorials I definitely think she has become a pioneer for beauty looks.
