People mistake hissing for a sign of aggression, but in cat-speak, hissing is just a way of communicating boundaries. Cats will do it both when forced into an uncomfortable situation, and when they've decided to expose themselves to something outside of their comfort zone. Luna's hisses aren't aggressive, they're her way of communicating she's not ready for snuggles, play time, none of that hooblah, she just wants to observe right now, and maybe she'll be ready later.

Luna looks like she is saying "I remember you an your siblings when you were that age. Keep them away from me." or " I told you this is what happens when you hooked up with that Tom Cat."

Three generations of the same feline family! Luna is quite majestic. And the sweet mews of one of the hungry kittens is precious! 😊

Grandma is very serious.

Luna has seen everything and is teaching the younger generation the ways of life.

"when I was a kitten, we had to work 25 hours a day and sleep in an old cardboard box at the bottom of a rubbish dump. You tell that to kittens nowadays and they wont believe you. We had it tough".

Shame about the hissing, but I think Luna's coming round. She's been gentle with the kittens, and it's lovely to see Luna and Freya lying next to eachother at the end. Merry Christmas to all the cats, and I hope they all get something nice from Santa Paws this year!

hissing is normal for cats around kittens cant remember the full reason but its part because of all the new scents and the changed scent of the mother

In my experience having had cats all my life (as well as the matriarch having a similar reaction to bringing a kitten home but being fine with an adult newcomer), I had assumed the hissing - without any growling or body language indicating aggression - is one of two things: expressing that "This is something new and I'm uncomfortable with it," or it's in service of establishing hierarchy. Just complete guesses on my part, though.

No Hope (.as a newborn .) .animals will.Ive never seen or heard of any animals not protecting their babies ,doing Everything to keep them safe ...Unlike human mothers .Abusing them in many ways and even killing them .,when they are purely innocent ,done nothing ...except for being born from a Monster !

Luna is tolerant, but she's not exactly overflowing with goodwill and Christmas cheer! At least she's sniffing the kittens, so she's getting more familiar with them. Luna has been a mumma before so she is very gentle with the Grand kittens ❤❤

That family of cats is blessed to be together I never see grand parent cats.

Remember the old saying, "Someday you'll have kids of your own."? It is like Freya was saying, "You were right, ma."

lol Luna just wants her space and visit the grandkittens at her terms! (good luck with that when they'll start running around for the whole house) They're still rather foreign objects and we know she likes to be on her own. I like though that she's warming up to them (again, at her terms) and that Freya is not bothered when Luna hisses, she clearly know she's not menacing or anything. The last scene with mom and daughter on the bed is sweet and it doesn't seem that there is any lingering tension.

What a beautiful cat she must be so proud of her legacy

Lol cats can have kittens really young and it’s not good to breed them older so while I don’t know these cats, Luna could be between 2 and 6 years old as a grandma cat which isn’t even middle aged so I don’t think she’s quite at the ow my back stage! She just maybe looks older than she is because of the Maine Coon features. Cats hiss when they’re scared and unsure and when there’s new smells. I think she was just nervous at coming near the mum cat (even though it’s her daughter) and going near her kittens but also because the kittens are cats she’s not familiar with. My cats have lived together for years but they have favourite bedrooms they hang out in and rarely see each other when they’re at opposite ends of the house, so sometimes hiss because they’re stupidly scared of this cat they know but haven’t seen for 2 days… Think it’s an instinct thing as most wild cats don’t live in groups but go around by themselves. 😊
