This video shows the growth of plastic strains in a bolted connection. The simulation is based on the following load steps:
1) Initial bolt preload
2) Preload relaxation due to embedment & elastic interaction
3) Applied tension load
Notice how the plastic strains remain constant until the applied tension load causes the joint members to separate. After this point, the strains increase rapidly.
