Growl (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
Ойындар
A playthrough of Taito's 1991 arcade beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Growl.
Played through as Jack on the normal difficulty level.
I remember playing the arcade version of this one quite often in a pizza shop back in the mid-90s, and I remember it being pretty in your face and over the top, and usually pretty funny because of how ridiculous everything was.
The Genesis version retains a lot of the goofiness, even if the 2P mode and voice samples were cut and the graphics were heavily scaled back. The important part, the gameplay, is still intact and pretty fun. You still begin the game in a bar being blown up, and whip/shoot/kick or otherwise maim illegal traders to free the animals. The freed animals also will come to your rescue at certain points, stampeding through the enemy or diving down on them from above.
It's a bit on the easy side and awfully short, but it feels like a reasonable beat 'em up of its era. Think of it as a rough draft of Capcom's later arcade beat 'em up Cadillacs and Dinosaurs - a very rough, but still enjoyable, draft. The arcade version is definitely the preferred way to go, but the Genesis port really isn't too shabby.

Well that escalated quickly. Went from conversation to grenade on the table to picking up a rocket launcher.

Love that he subdues the lion whopper with a point blank rocket launch

Didn't think much about it till now you mentioned it, lol. "Hey bartender, another drink over here..OH SHIT, JUST LOBSTER" (pulls out flamethrower)
Less than 3 minutes in and we've got this glorious moment from 2:07 to 2:14 where he throws a grenade, and dives for cover by DIVING ON TOP OF THE GRENADE, then proceeds to live while the explosion kills everyone else.
Growl isn't Taito's best ever arcade port - not by a long shot - but it's a fair facsimile that still serves as a fun, though shallow, beat 'em up.

even better as Runark.
Double Dragon 2 MD: 3 enemies at a time + slowdown Growl MD: 11 bigger sized enemies at a time + no slowdown (and still 60 FPS) The programming competence really shows with this game.

The first two DD arcades have that slowdown flaw, but yeah, DD2 for the Mega Drive is a joke.

@@Vectormantudeoz Yeah, the first two (actually three. DD3 slows down with 3 player mode) games weren't the best optimized, but considering how DD2 MD doesn't even look better than a Master System game and still slows down, it's absolutely pathetic in comparison
Oh how I loved the arcade version of Growl! It's got all the best craziness you want on top of a pretty fun Beat 'em Up game.
What I really like about your descriptions/reviews is that they're all unbiased, reasonable, and prove fair views on any type of game. The videos are also recorded well, unlike World of Longplays...

Love how that Eagle just picks up a guy who’s built like Schwarzenegger 😂
This was better than the arcade
so nostalgic, music is so good! i really like much runark!
Loved the game and the message of saving wildlife. Though it could have done without the alien baddie concept.

If you lose to the final boss there's a Bad ending.
I didn't know this gem existed! Funny thing is when he's throwing the grenade duck for cover with his stomach on top of the said grenade :P I think he;s doing it wrong but hey it works for him for some reason :P
beautiful :)
SORRY MY FRIENDS AND ALLIES THE DISSAGGREER HUNTERS FROM BOTH WORLDS
I'm here because John Riggs told me to check out the final boss
But those 4 firing rocket launchers weren't invented in the early part of the 20th century.

Aliens mutilate cattle, and we tryin to save the animals.
Needs more "Shbroom!"
At least the tank is well made here. In the arcade it is very ugly! By the way, the last boss is very similar to the boss of the factory stage of the Master System version of Streets of Rage!
"And I will give u anything u want" Jack: sorry I don't take orders from WWE wrestlers who are planning to be like PETA *stabs* "My guts" *Falls to the ground*
Once you play the beautifully chaotic arcade version, and you see how watered down this port is, you tend to get disappointed. Taito seemed to struggle somewhat on the Genesis.

only for genesis?

Or if one has a modded PS2, they can get the Japanese Taito compilations, where the game is intact.
