Battletoads & Double Dragon (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

Ойындар

A playthough of Tradewest's 1993 beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team.
Played through as Rash.
Like the SNES version of the game, Battletoads/Double Dragon on the Genesis is a heavily upgraded port of the NES game of the same name.
You can find my video of the SNES version here: • Battletoads & Double D...
And the original NES game here:
• Battletoads/Double Dra...
The SNES and Genesis ports do have sine differences between them, though. While the SNES game has better graphics and much higher sound quality, the Genesis cart features much improved cutscenes and more characters on-screen at once, some altered level layouts, and it overall feels a bit more responsive.
Both versions are great, but I think that the Sega game has the definite edge here. That being said, despite the constraints of the NES hardware, I still think that the 8-bit original is still the best overall version of the game.
Still, you can't go wrong with any of the three. They're all good, classic beat 'em ups, and it's clear that Rare poured a lot of care and attention into all of them.
If you like the idea of combining unattractive skin conditions with martial arts, Battletoads and Double Dtagon is an ace pick.

@@Dorian_Scott Eh I have this version, the SNES version, the Game Boy version, AND the NES version. I'd highly recommend the NES version, it feels better for some odd reason, as though the Toads were meant for an 8 bit console more than a 16 bit one.

I find it really interesting that while the SNES version were content to increase the colors on the NES version's toads, the Genesis version here actually have redrawn sprites altogether for them!

  • @mresturk9336

    @mresturk9336

    3 жыл бұрын

Both versions redraw the toads. The Both SNES and Genesis version use larger sprites for the toads than the NES version (about 42 pixels tall for both 16bit versions compared to about 32 pixels tall for the NES version). The Genesis version is still considered the better port overall due to the SNES version cutting a few corners (lost visual effects, dialog, music, etc). One oddity is despite having noticeably different toad redraws the double dragon redraws are virtually identical between both ports aside from their palette. Its something of a trend for the two ports: some redrawn sprites are shared between both and others are completely different.

This is probably my favorite version of Battletoads & Double Dragon - Rare definitely handled this one with a little more care than the Genesis port of the original Battletoads. Most people know Dave Wise for his SNES music, but he was also one of those composers who knew how to make the Genesis sound grand... even if this game isn't exactly the best example to go by (Snake Rattle 'n Roll holds that distinction for me). I also like how this version corrects some minor visual weirdness that was present in the NES and SNES versions... namely the elevator animations - I know I can't be the only one who was bothered by the elevator doors in Blag's stage opening by sliding upwards when they clearly weren't meant to.

I agree. This is better than the NES & SNES versions. This was the version of Battletoads & Double Dragon I remember trying to beat as a kid. Seems closer to the NES version than the SNES version, but isn't a perfect conversion. Billy and Jimmy on the Select Screen look worried compared to the NES mugs and the bosses' sprites (Big Blag and Manus most notably) don't match the close-ups as well as the SNES did. It also lacks the Missile landing in the Level 6 intro and it makes the transition a bit too sudden.

I'm so confused seeing so many people online claiming the SNES has better sound. Maybe you need to play it with a proper CRT in person to really hear the difference. But in literally every video I've watched comparing all the versions the SNES sounds considerably more muffled than the Genesis with a notable difference in sound variety. The music doesn't even change for the boss fights on SNES! And to claim the NES version is superior to all of them I find kind of silly. The SNES has some key differences but the Genesis version is superior to the NES is pretty much every single way. Don't get me wrong it's a great game no matter how you play it but there's no way the definitive version isn't on Genesis. In the end I guess it all just comes down to nostalgia.

As one of I’m assuming the few women in this comment section who grew up playing this game, I have no issues with it. It’s a video game. And looking at the series as their separate selves, Linda Lash actually had an equal role in the Black Warriors to the men, one of the first female video game characters to be in such a position. The Dark Queen on the other hand is the supreme commander of a space army trying to conquer the galaxy, one of the first major villainess in video games. She’s the one kidnapping the princess instead of being the helpless token female in so many other games at the time. Seeing only the violence against them (in a beat-em-up game) is an insult to their characters and the overlooked impact they had on females in video games.

A great game, but the developers should have done more research into the source material.... "Roper"? That character should have been "Willy"...also what is up with the "Shadow Boss"? I don't remember any enemies like that in the Double Dragon series..
