I dealt with a Ferguson TO-30. 12 years old, and I had to jump on both the clutch and the brakes, and the L brake was in the L side, well behind the clutch. How I didn't wreck things is still a mystery to me. Never cottoned to MF after that, even after they caught up with the rest of the world for pedals.

What are your thoughts on a covington planter?? i bought one in may and have had the worst time getting it to plant uniform and not too deep even though i have the disc openers at 1.5 inches for my beans. im looking at either removing the shovel on the front of it and/or buying a JD 71 planter and sell the covington....

@@Richard31406 I see more old covington planters at the auctions than any other kind. I think the 71s are considered to be superior to them. I run a 7000 planter on most of my produce. The covington and 71s are easier to get parts for (not at the JD place) than the 7000, but the 7000 is the best if you’re planting acres. If I was planting big gardens I’d stick to 71 or Covington. Does your Covington have a down pressure spring? JD planters have down pressure separate from depth set. If you’re running too much down pressure that could be your issue.

@@Richard31406 a few things that may help if you’re not doing them already: 1. Uniform speed around 3 mph. 2. Prepare ground then let it get a good rain (or irrigating) on it to firm it up some. If ground is too soft seed depths will be wildly inconsistent. 3. Run the planter about 1” above the ground for 40’ and see if it’s dropping the seeds uniform. If it is then the planter isn’t the issue. If it isn’t then there may be a worn out (or multiple) sprocket or you may need different plates. 4. Are you in clay? If so you may be planting them correctly but then getting a crust over the top that is preventing emergence. I always scratch behind the planter and find the seeds. This lets you know how it’s spacing them and what depth they are. They come up better if you plant into moisture than planting in dry dirt and then irrigating. You’ll want the top of the ground dry but the seed zone to have plenty of moisture. 5. Of course don’t plant too deep. If the seeds are deeper than the main knuckle on your finger then it’s putting them too deep. You will get a sporadic stand when planting too deep.
