Growing Plants with Zero Natural Light!

    I’ve been going through all your videos the last few days. Love your channel! I live in Colorado very close to an awful forest fire. The sun is hanging out behind a terrible plume of smoke all this week and has been on and off the last few months. The amount of sunlight my poor plants are getting has been a lot less than normal and the sunlight just doesn’t reach as far into my house as it usually does. I currently have most of my house plants cramped on window sills which isn’t my style but my 2 year old loves🥴. My husband installed LED lights throughout our house earlier this year. I’ll check into the details of our lights but I am excited to know that maybe I can move some of my plants back to their home and out of the reach of my toddler!

    Fascinating... So they can obtain a spectrum of light from an LED source! I'm a disaster with plants... Had trailing ivy in my (frosted window) bathroom but I gave up after 3 plants and invested in an excellent fake Boston Fern instead. Didn't know whether I was over or under watering. However I have some sprigs of ivy that thrive in a vase of water... Cuttings I guess you could call them and they root and shoot well!

    Thank you ❤🌿 Honest answer: at first I didn't want my fiance knowing I was leaving lights on all day while we were at work! 😆 If they turned off before he got home he wouldn't be wise to it 😏 The cost to keep them on was not noticeable in the bill at the end of the month so he didn't care, but then I never changed the schedule! 😅😆 The lights are probably on close to 12 hours a day or more once I account for them being turned on by us in the evening to help light the apartment 👍🏻 excellent point that I should have raised! Thanks for bringing that up 😁

    You should check the Sansi light bulbs then, people use them to grow tomatoes and vegetables in their basement. But plants do not work as air filter, in order to purify enough air from the pollution of a city or even small town, you'd need to be surrounded by threes for it to have an impact... so that means actually live in a forest or the countryside and not a city. The whole "purifying air" is just another marketing device to sell plants.

    @2:08 I haven't watched the full video yet, but I think you can get plants to thrive even without "real" sun. Some LEDs Growlights are so powerful and performant nowaday that my biggest sansi grow light bulb (we nicknamed it the "machine sun" in reference to Jeb, also if some people are able to fully grow tomatoes in their basement with these, they definitely are enough) is actually giving sunburns to some of my full sun succulents that were outside in full sun all summer and I had to move it further away. it also burn my eyes even just looking at the reflection in aluminum lol. I think it just comes down to choosing the right full spectrum growlight and not using only regular LEDs that are on the blue spectrum. I also have a less powerful growlight that only does red, blue and some green spectrum and this is not powerful enough to get plants to thrive (however, it's also half the watts/hour consumption) but it definitely helps supplement my plants because my flat ONLY has north facing windows (but thanks God half of these are velux windows, so they produce a lot of indirect light which my alocasias seem to love). Also sorry if the goal of the video is to show how you can use regular/human-aimed LEDs , then I misunderstood, but these lights are always blue LEDs with some sort of coating making them appear white, so you would lack several shades of the spectrum with these for plants.

  • @PlanteriorDecorator

    @PlanteriorDecorator

    This is definitely great info!! I was intending to show that your regular run-of-the-mill LED bulbs from Costco will get the job done if you leave them on long enough haha 😁 but you're 100% correct! Growlights are fantastic and I use them to grow my specialty plants in rooms with 0 sun as well and they grow way better than in sunlight! It truly feels like cheating 😆 love the growlight nickname haha

  • @Leafwatcher07

    @Leafwatcher07

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@PlanteriorDecorator yeah as I was typing the comment and listening to the video, I realized this was your intention but didn't wanna erase the whole thing xD. it does truly feel like cheating yes, some of my succulents are now thriving more than this summer lol, I have an Aeonium Schwarztkopf (we call it Schwarzi lolz) that tripled in width whereas it was struggling a little at the end of the summer because it wasn't getting enough direct light. That's the kind of thing that make you realize the whole" if it's natural it's healthy" is bullshit, cause even plants love better cycles with specialized spectrums than what the sun can offer xD. Another example is how dart frogs can live over 30 years in terrariums and die usually before 10 in the wild (not to mention the killer mushroom that's been spreading and decimating amphibians in central America for a while now). Anyway sorry for typing books everytime, just love talking about these topics. It's very nice of you to have answered so fast and read it all haha, love your channel, I'll stick around ;P (oh also I see you have quite a few A. So I have a couple questions: 1. I don't need high light for props?! I was actually looking at getting one of the IKEA cabinets for propagating but now it looks like I don't need to! 2. I have no windows in my bathroom either, but currently I have 4 led daylight lightbulbs in there (6500 lumens). Is that too bright or perfect for a sad looking, humidity loving plant?!

  • @PlanteriorDecorator

    @PlanteriorDecorator

    1. No you don't! Roots grow best in the dark, so generally most probs do well in a shadier location. I've rooted many cuttings in windowless rooms with tons of success 😁 2. That should work! Definitely monitor while transitioning - you'll notice pretty quick if any plants don't love it! They'll totally appreciate the humidity!
