Growing dahlias month by month episode 7: May
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A step by step guide to growing dahlias. In this episode Geoff shows how he takes the growth point out of his dahlias to make them bush out, and he also shows how he prepares the soil prior to planting the dahlias out.
Dahlias
Dahlias start flowering in July and will continue to flower until the first frost, so they have a very long flowering season.
Their flowers come in many sizes from the tiniest pompons to the giant dinner-plate varieties, there are several shapes, including the round ball shaped decorative varieties, the spiky cactus types, the delicately pretty waterlilies and the pin-cushion shaped anemones.
They come in every colour apart from blue, and there are dahlias that reach 9 feet / 3 metres tall, whilst others only reach 18 inches / 40 centimetres.
So there is a dahlia suitable for every garden, and they can even be grown in pots.
Geoff and Heather have been growing dahlias for many years and use the different shapes and sizes to help create a tiered effect in their garden in Cheshire. Together with salvias, fuchsias, and bedding plants they have managed to create a riot of summer colour.
Each September they open their garden to the public as part of the U.K. National Garden Scheme.
In this video, and the other videos in the series, they show you how they manage to do this, providing guidance on how to grow perfect dahlias.

A bit of a handful wherever I fancy 😂, Thanks for making all these videos they are really helpful for beginners like me 🙏
🇨🇦🇨🇦Hi Geoff and Heather, Garry and Betty visiting your channel and your garden from The Ole Church 5 Acre Homestead!
Keep it up Geoff and Heather. These are the best videos on Dahlias, especially the bits about "pot tubers".
Sun, warmth and affection from Italy! My dahlias are ahead of a month and, thanks to your advices, they are bushy
Thank you Geoff and Heather for these wonderful, informative and helpful videos. I love your down to earth and practical style. You’ve inspired me to try pot tubers this year, and it’s loads of fun! Looking forward to the next video, keep well!Greetings from Munich.
Thank you for these videos, very informative. Please keep 'em coming, I'm obsessed with Dahlias and your garden is the best!
We NEED to know what you two are up to. We even worry! Hope you are well and looking forward to watching your next video !!! Lots of love !
Thank you for making these videos, they're so enjoyable and informative. "A bit of a handful where ever I fancy" is the most practical method for measuring fertiliser I've heard, and definitely how I'll be doing it!
You made me look at my plants with new eyes, this will be a good year ! Thank you for taking the time to show all your tips and tricks 😀
Greetings from Northern California, zone 9b. Thank you so much for your explanation on "pinching" Dahlias - I’ve tried to research that topic and yours is the BEST and most easily understood. Also, I wanted to share I followed your suggestion to spread the snail bait a couple weeks prior to planting my potted Dahlias, I use Sluggo, and it appears to have worked excellently. It's 90degrees Fahrenheit as I write this and I have already planted most all of the Dahlias I potted up back in February - which are growing nicely I should add. Thank you again for sharing your wealth of knowledge - Goodbye for now.
I would have forgot to pinch out the growing tips if it wasn't for your video today so perfect timing. Started growing dahlias for the first time last year and they were just wonderful, thanks to following the guidance of your videos. Best videos on dahlias for sure. Thank you both from Ireland.🙂
Love your Work, Love your Humour! I've seen all of your videos! Greetings from Greece!
Love love love Geoff and Heather : )
Love you two!
looking forward to the next video. hope its up soon
I started Dahlias last year and am now obsessed. Your videos are so much better to follow than others. My greenhouse is full and dahlias are all sprouting. Can i plant them out safely yet. Im in Leeds UK.
Fingers crossed indeed enjoyed the video happy days you two.
Hi Sam. It probably is safe to plant out, but the longer you leave them in their pots to grow taller, the less likely they are to be eaten by slugs!
Look forward to it thanks
love your videos
Awesome energy from you guys! Loved the video!
Love your way of explaining things ,I had a look at Ken Scott video ,not a patch on your videos so interesting love em all . Ime from Notts so understand all 😅😅
Lovely video thank you guys! Heather❤the peg! Last year I really struggled with aphids nothing worked, they would just keep coming back.I sure will try sb plant invigilator. Gareth Rowlands bible of dahlias on my shopping list I would love to try make new varieties! 😀
Mine are barely growing I’ve started Late because of the weather too. I live dahlias but ever year I lose my corms overwintering , close to giving up but I love them 😍

Me too but last fall I just said “the heck with pulling them up” and I left them in the ground. That proved to be far better than I could have planned. Because they are planted close to my foundation they survived and started themselves up this spring. I was surprised and very happy.I’m in zone 6b.

seame61 funny you should say that...yesterday I found one in a pot behind my shed with a healthy corm that I'd forgotten was there 😊 so I'm gonna give them a chance and leave them all there next year maybe they'll survive , thanks
Slugs: I was told to put very few pellets down, not a handful; too many will attract more slugs. The best advice was to put slug pellets down in September as a 'slug birth-control' system'. This would either minimise or wipe out the next lot of eggs. Nothing beats beer or cider in a basin hidden behind the border. Or keep a pet hedgehog!
I love to see your garden and how you grow dahlia, thank you
I love to watch you, God bless you both. What a wonderful video you are so inspiring helpful thank you so much for all the information
Missing you in this 2022 season. I hope everything is fine.
Our Dahlias are mostly still just very small shoots. Only one have I taken out the growing point. We're going to take cuttings for the first time this year.
Again really helpful video. What time in the month do you plan to plant out the dahlia? And what does it mean when their leaves wilt but they are well watered? 🤔
Thanks for this. I’m in Scotland and the dahlias are just getting growing need more sun. Don’t we all.
Brilliant thank you !!
what do you use for outdoor gnats
Be patient remember the apple will only drop only when ripened we are looking forward to your beautiful garden
To Khoa Tran. Unfortunately there is no cure for gall disease, you need to throw the plant away to stop the disease spreading.
Hi Geoff. Only my second year growing dahlias. My tuberous ones were planted in my raised bed this week but I collected seeds from various friends gardens and successfully germinated them all (ended up with 40 as I couldn't part with any). I wanted to see what they looked like before I planted up into final position to save compost and obviously all the time it would take planting them up but they have become very pot bound and although there are flower buds I still cant tell what they're going to look like. I will be planting some in pots and some in the ground. My question is can I let the flower open and then cut the top off to promote more side shoots but with them being pot bound I am worried I am doing more harm than good leaving them.

I think you should be ok to let them flower. If the flower is good, deadhead it when it’s done and you should get more. I don’t think you can hurt a plant by leaving it in a pot, it will produce a tuber you can use next year. I leave the ones I’m growing as “pot tubers” in very small pots for the whole summer.

Thank you so much for replying. It is really helpful to know you leave the ones you're growing as "pot tubers" in small pots all summer - I don't feel as pressured now to plant them on immediately. It's great to have experinced guidance from people like yourself. Thanks again.
How do you treat on leafy gall disease on dahlia? these videos are the best!
Oh and by the way, that slug stuff is very tasty to dogs and it’s not good for them so be careful.
