Growing Cucumber Timelapse - Seed To Fruit

This one was a bit tricky but it turned out alright after a bit of work.
The beginning went well but after i started filming the first three cucumbers they suddenly rotted away at the same time at day 45.
After that i started to take better care of the plant and and added a piece of plexiglass so the fourth cucumber wouldn't be in contact with the moist soil. Also removed the lower leaves when they started to get a bit dry to get a better view of the cucumbers.

When I was a kid my mom planted cucumbers near a 30 foot tree and the vines claimed the tree and we had a tree full of cucumbers. It was fun climbing the tree to pick them and drop them down to my mom. We made many jars of yummy pickles. They were great on burgers or just as a snack. Summer of 94 was great.

@@newvocabulary They need to be pollinated. If insects aren't doing it for you, look for male flowers to do it manually. Female flowers will have a fruit behind them like those shown in this video. Male flowers lack the fruit. Gently remove the male flower from the plant, then dab and twist it into all the female flowers to spread the genetic material. Look for videos of manual pollination if this isn't clear enough for you. You should have growing fruit very quickly. Good luck!

To anyone whose not seeing germination within 5-7 days: you probably have a bad seed. The best way to see if you have viable seeds before planting them is drop all your seeds in a cup of water. Wait 15 minutes. All the seeds that are floating on the top, throw them out. I didnt realize this trick until i planted my third bag of seeds, so some of the seeds i planted before were wasting my soil and water resources. Its a good thing to do. I will just use the ones that didnt sprout as more filling and topping soil Edit: All the seeds that sunk to the bottom are good to go for planting in soil and will likely germinate👍

@@Genshinlmao123 ... We don’t plant outside until June 1st. Our spring is that short, about 3 weeks. When March 20 came this year we had 7 days of beautiful weather. Then we got 2’ of snow and temps in the 20s. This lasted 2 weeks. Our overnight lows did not rise above 32 until about 10 days ago. The day time temps were 30s - 40s until recently and have peaked at low 50s until recently. We had some scattered nice days. Most days are cloudy with very little sun. It’s toasty (sort of) in the greenhouse when there’s sun. I started tomatoes in the greenhouse early April. They didn’t germinate until early May. Since then they have grown like wildfire to 1.5” 😂 Greenhouses do not get warm, unless there is consistent sunshine and outside temps are reasonable. I’m planning on building a smaller shed this summer (for next year) that is heated, just for starting plants.

Those leaves are from the seed itself (they start off as the plant's initial food supply) and generally last long enough for the plant to start growing more leaves. That's the oversimplified version since it also depends on the type of plant.

My seeds germinated and sprouted in about 48 hours; I have a really good compost that I mix with Espoma's seed starter blend. The root systems have developed faster than the true leaves though, so I was stuck at about day 6-7 for 4-5 days. Once that first leaf unfurls from the stem though, you're pretty much good to go so long as you don't over-sun or underwater the plant.

Those must be male flowers. Male flowers have only long thin stalk on them whereas female flowers sprout with cucumber like thick stalk as you see in the video. You can pluck off all the male flowers. Please google “cucumber male vs female flowers”. Male flowers pollinate the female flowers but if male flowers are allowed to grow to full bloom they can make the cucumber bitter. What you have on your plant right now is all male flowers and that’s completely normal. Give it a few more days and you will see female flowers soon. I hope I answered your question. Please feel free to ask me anything else if you need. Happy growing!
