Growing a Years Worth of Garlic | How and When to Harvest and Cure Garlic

#GrowingGarlic #AcreHomestead #CuringGarlic #HarvestingGarlic
Instagram @AcreHomestead - / acrehomestead
It's been my dream to grow my own garlic for many years, and today that dream came true! It was so fun to harvest my homegrown garlic. Half of growing garlic is knowing when and how to harvest and cure it. You want to harvest your garlic when it has three dead leaves and then curing your garlic for 14 days. Curing your garlic will allow it to be pantry stable.

I have grown stiff neck garlic for 5 years in Iowa. The cool thing about growing garlic is how hands off it is. And we use the plants from that year for the next year. We grow 96 heads of garlic. Each heads produces 5-6 cloves. So we set aside 18 plants to plant in the fall that will grow till next summer. We started this process from one bulb we bought in Galena IL. That year we grew 6, then 12, then 24, then 48, then 96 plants. It’s amazing how so much can come from so little. We find 70 or so bulbs gets us through the year and I thought I used a lot of garlic. I don’t know how you can use 578 plants! But I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Hi! I’m studying microbiology and I would not recommend this!!!! Garlic stored in olive oil is the perfect oxygen free environment for botulism growth, garlic stored in oil should never be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours and if stored immediately in the fridge it should be tossed after 2-3 days although rare, botulism poisoning can be really really deadly and I don’t want anyone to get hurt!

We have been growing our own garlic since 2000. I bought 1 pound of garlic from a young man at the International Plowing Match (for $1.00) that year in Elora, Ontario, Canada. He taught me the fundamentals of growing and have been growing it ever since. We usually grow about 50 plants which is enough for us and family members. We use our own heads to plant the next year's crop in October which we cover with a very thick layer of straw to protect it during our long, cold winters here in midwestern Ontario,, Canada.

WOW, so much garlic!! I just ordered some to try as I have never done it before! For labeling I bought white plastic nursery markers I bought the taller ones I think 6 or 8 inches. I attach the markers higher so it is easier for me to see, if it is on the ground they are hard to find as everything gets taller and they get buried!! On the cattle panel arch I stick on on the post facing the variety and in ground I like using one of the metal straight electric fencing poles and I attach it at the top. This also makes it easier for me to make notes on my garden testing chart (I got the idea from The Seasonal Homestead). I put it into a spreadsheet for myself and hang it on a clipboard in the kitchen so I can mark how much the produce weighs (I am not great at this) but at least if I can mark that we got 10 squashes it helps to know how much we got, if we like the variety, if it did well for us and want to grow it again or not! The clipboard helped a lot as I can take it out to the garden if I want too! Next year, I want to add my garden plan on there too so I can plan things better but we will see I am trying to start a garden journal so I don't forget the varieties of fruit trees/bushes I already have planted.

For your hardneck garlic, they grow garlic scapes up the center of the stalk that I think produce cloves if you do not prune them off. I've read that pruning is recommended for your garlic to put it's energy into forming the bulbs. The garlic scapes are delicious so definitely don't throw them away if you prune them off next time!

This year I have 290 cloves planted and 13 elephant garlics. Elephant garlic is not a true garlic and is more from the leek family. I gave away a bit as whole bulbs and then the rest I left in a dark dry area. I had enough to plant for the next year. To work out how much you need to grow, work out roughly how much you go through in a week then multiply that by 52. If you want to grow more for family and friends add another 20% - 30% Make sure you have good soil, plenty of manure, compost and good drainage. So keep this in mind. I stuck with hardnecks as the taste was amazing. I sold it locally for $20/lb. It's a lot of work on harvest weekend. Family helpers made it doable. Love that plant!

I had some of the weird little baby cloves in some me of my stalks of garlic as well. I wasn’t quite sure what they were or what had caused them and I haven’t had a chance to look it up so I’m glad you addressed it in this video.

I've never grown garlic before but I'm wanting to. I can't believe you planted over 500 for the first year, or any year lol! You are going to be so busy for awhile. I'm anxious to see what you do with it. I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to grow it. I'm thinking in one of my containers so that it won't interfere with my spring planting.

I grew garlic for the first time this year and planted it in one of my raised beds. Nothing seemed to bother it (deer or rabbits) so this fall I am going to plant it out in my landscape so I’m not using up one of my raised beds.

I live in a village in rural Croatia and we grow a lot of our own food. The soil here is naturally extremely fertile and the season long and fairly perfect for agriculture so most people grow their own vegetables, roots, fruits and berries et cetera and this is our habit too, but I don't seem able to grow garlic and I love garlic! I need to learn a bit more. I planted garlic cloves in the autumn and in the summer they all are one, onion-shaped clove. I left them in the ground. We'll see how they develop (if they do). I had no idea there are garlics that have different growing stages as explained in this video. Very interesting.

Although it is time consuming I totally recommend doing the garlic and honey ferment!! I have been waiting for the year mark before getting into a jar of it. By the smells that come out of the jar while it ferments made me have to starte more jars from this years harvest to preserve the same way.
