Great video! Yes, this year (2022) we are growing 4 varieties of squash (zucchini, yellow, butternut & spaghetti) and of course 4 varieties of cucumbers. We got 6 cattle panels this year to grow vertically (tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peas, beans, watermelon & melons). Judi

Very Cool! I was thinking I was not going to get to grow any zucchini or crookneck squash because it would take up too much space! I've typically devoted my space to all tomatoes, beans, onions, & a variety of herbs, but the current situation around the world has me branching out. Nothing like going to the store and the only produce available is on it's last leg or wiped out (been the situation here for a month). So now I already have Chard, Beans, Tomatoes, Salad Mix, Arugula, Sun Flowers, Dill, & a variety of Peppers all in the seedling stage and am now going to start the zucchini & crooknecks soon! One of these days I'll have room for corn! Will be buying property hopefully sometime in the next 12 months. Praying!

I followed your advice and grew zucchini and yellow squash vertically in my garden this year! I usually grow 6-8 plants and wanted to free up some room in the garden. I have to say it was a success! I loved how neat and tidy the plants looked as I kept them pruned. The only downside was that the production was less because I had to stay with a single stem and not let the plants branch off and sprawl, but that just meant I didn't have summer squash to give to the neighbors.

I like your garden video’s. I’ve seen a lot of garden videos but what I like about yours is you talk about one subject at a time and they’re simple and direct. I always thought that zucchini couldn’t grow on a vine because I always thought that they rooted as the vine grew along the ground.

@@NextLevelGardening I grew zucchini on stakes a couple years ago and had great success. The biggest challenge is staying on top of the tying since they grow so fast. I pruned the old leaves as they grew and harvested tons. It's so much easier to find the fruit before they get too big.

When I grow spaghetti squash or melons on a cattle panel, I make a little hammock out of old pantyhose to support the weight of the fruit/veg. Just tie it directly onto the panel when the squash or melon starts getting some size on them. I would think that you could use any lightweight fabric.

last year I grew spaghetti squash on a cattle panel trellis, only I had my full length cattle panels arched over so that you could walk under them. The vines loved them and I did get a couple of mature spaghetti squash. My short growing season was the problem though. The method really does work though.

I tried growing spaghetti squash from ones I bought at the grocery store on 2 different occasions. The first time I had no success, I was outside Phoenix and had too many critters. The 2nd time I had more success. I trained the vines up a trellis (wood slats) but didn't get any mature fruit before my vines froze one night early September, it was in Alaska. I didn't want to just throw everything in the compost, so I pulled the 6 fruit I did have and brought them inside. I peeled the first one and sliced it up like a cucumber. It was crunchy, juicy and slightly sweet - amazing. I saved one in the crisper to see how long it lasted. It was soft and unappetizing within 24 hours.

I didn't cut the stalks of the squash at the bottom and just have one stalk. I zip tied all of the stalks to the stake. Now they are growing vertically, but the squash is at the bottom and is not maturing. The other stalks are blocking the full growth. I think they might be 1 inch tall. My question is can I cut the stalks now in order to get more squash blooms at the top?

@California Garden TV I just transplanted my first zucchini into a furrow (not a raised bed, since I only have one built right now, and it's getting my tomatoes and peppers). I made the furrow 10-12" deep and worked the soil until it was sort and loose (not easy). Then I used a pitchfork to turn lots of my homemade compost into it, since you said they love compost. I also lined each hole with a layer of compost and sprinkled a little rock phosphate in there, since I am pretty sure the soil I turned isn't all that nutrient rich. Anyway, what I would like to know is how long I should wait before trying to train these transplanted starts up posts (I have been growing them in pots, and they alreayd have several sets of decent sized leaves, and one even has some flower buds starting up), and also how high of a post I should use. From where you put your hands in the video to indicate the canopy, it seemed like a zucchini should be about 3 feet high, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for the great videos! This is my first year gardening and I have been watching videos like mad. Yours are some of the best I have come across. P.S. (Can you please do one on how to make good compost? I have a hard time keeping mine hot.)

I made hammocks out of netting for the fruit at first. I took a week off and returned to find some had slipped from the hammocks and waited to see what would happen...the whole front half had full size fruit hanging all over the place!! Last year, my biggest sweetmeat at 15 pounds was 5 feet off the ground on my 45 degree lean-to....good grow every one....Peace

Brian: Summer squash can be blanched & dried then frozen. I do this every year. Last year, we had a bad squash & zucchini season. Thank goodness my cousin had extra.

Hi there! It's my first year growing squash and I wish I'd seen your video first. We put in some trellising but didn't know how to get the zucchini to use it - now I know! Question: Can I cut the leaves off of my straightneck squash in the same way you're cutting the zucchini leaves? The plant structures look identical. Also, is it going to shock the plant if I start cutting a bunch of leaves at once now that I know I can? Thank you so much!

Loved your video! Thank you! I was trying to grow my zucchini and summer squash vertically and have a trellis-type ready, but I think I messed up and waited too long to lead the stalks up the netting. I now have large leaves and several blooms / small fruit starting... is it too late for me to direct the plants upward? If you don't think it is too late, do you have a video that shows the next step from this video and show us how to manage the growing plant? Thank you!

@@NextLevelGardening I got an alert, which is the only reason why I came back after you posted this. Don't get all butthurt dude, just get an editor. It was a good video, but like many KZread videos there's a lot of rambling and I kept fast forwarding to the meat Rather than just dismissed this is rude, just take it as a criticism and maybe you should tighten up your videos. Trust me you're not alone in this. I like the video overall, I wouldn't even have bothered to comment.

Question please: Why am I only getting male flowers, profusely, on my two grey zucchini plants (in Tucson). I've grown zucchini before and never experienced this. Grown from purchased seed, organic--always. Perhaps I'm letting the plants range too far? They're growing both up a stake and out over the edge of a tall raised bed. Can't figure it out. Will be very grateful for a reply

I need a little help! We started our first garden with 2, 12*4' beds using sq.ft. planting. We took your advice and took our squash vertical. We installed 6.5' tall cattle panels for the squashes and zucchini. Suddenly, within the last two weeks, my spaghetti squash went from little plants to ~ 7' tall as of today! It's over my cattle panel! What do we do now? Thank you in advance!

Great video. A couple of questions. I’m trying to also grow my zukes upwards. What do you use to tie the “trunk” to the stake? 2. Could I use a triangular tomato cage? Thanks for the idea of growing the melons and squash on opposite sides of the trellis!

Thank you for watching! I tried a tomato cage but it was difficult to get the leaves in between each space. And some of the leaves got messed up. I'm using elastic bands to tie them. I use that for most of my vegetables. It's super inexpensive and you get a bunch of it. I put a link in the description of the video to what I use.

Luz Adriana Unfortunatley, elastic is hard to find, due to COVID mask-making,. If you sew or know a quilter or anyone who sews, ask them to save the selvage pieces for you. These make handy ties for plant support. (Colorful, too!)
