I planted the Clemson Spineless and Burgundy Red side by side this year and came up with opposite results from you. The Burgundy Red got tough in smaller size, and did not produce as well as the Clemson Spineless. I am in upstate SC. I will not plant Burgundy Red again. I don’t know why we would get such different results but I just wanted to throw that out there for what it is worth! I will try the Cajun Okra next year. Thank you for the info.

Well, I've been growing Clemson Spinless for probably 40 years... but I planted me some of both of these this year... I think with that many years of experience I'll be in a good position to say if the yield is different. Hoss seeds are more expensive than at my local hardware... I'm trusting they are doing their homework, and bringing us better varieties, and honest advise, they have given me no reason to doubt them to date. The incremental cost of Hoss seed really isn't that much for the hobby farmer (although I take offense to that term). I work very hard in my garden, to keep my family with quality produce and safe food... and I plan to continue as long as I'm able. Hoss Tools is actually making that better, at least for me. I did Drip this year for the very first time, and I can say for sure, even with the trouble I've had with it (pest problems, not product problems), that I have WAY fewer weeds. These guys don't give me a thing except advice, and entertainment. I don't know them, and I don't get paid in any way... just my opinion... which I am never shy about giving one way or the other. I have shopped various things they sell, and their prices are competitive on most things... I'm trusting the additional cost on the seeds will be worth it, if not I really haven't lost that much. Along with the drip I was able to pack more into my garden then usual, given I'll be using fertilizer injection as well... lots of first for this dirt farmer this year... Have lots to learn, but what else an I going to do at my age. :) That little kid sitting on my knee is a grown man now... time goes by quickly!

"I" simply won't even walk in the okra patch without a long sleeve shirt, even when it's 90 outside... it's just insane. I have also started planting Red Burgundy, and I like it as well. The only thing I dislike about Jambalaya is it's a hybrid (can't save seed)... but from a production standpoint... it puts on the okra! Hope this helps.

  • @gardeningwithhoss

No it won't. Pruning does reduce the production because the plants will make okra on those side shoots. But I'd rather plant more plants and not have to fight through all the foliage when harvesting.

I tried the jambalaya okra in Northwest Al. It did start bearing at about a foot tall but it got tough extremely quick..The Clemson spineless in a side by side test out performed the jumbila tremendously..the jumbila got tough much quicker and in our soil and temperature here I was not impressed at all. At our location, Clemson spineless is a much better producer..Thanks.
