Groups of the periodic table | Periodic table | Chemistry | Khan Academy

Keep going! Check out the next lesson and practice what you’re learning:
www.khanacademy.org/science/b...
The s-, p-, and d-block elements of the periodic table are arranged into 18 numbered columns, or groups. The elements in each group have the same number of valence electrons. As a result, elements in the same group often display similar properties and reactivity. View more lessons or practice this subject at www.khanacademy.org/science/c...
Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We offer quizzes, questions, instructional videos, and articles on a range of academic subjects, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, history, economics, finance, grammar, preschool learning, and more. If groups 8, 9, and 10 have the same amount of valence electrons - namely 8, why are they not grouped as one? What properties differentiates groups (families) 8, 9, and 10 - if valence electrons do not doffer those three families (also called "VIIIB")?

  • @NushratNur

    @NushratNur

    Helium, having one shell and that being it's outermost shell, has 2 shells. Atoms need 2,8,18 electrons consecutively for every shell to be stable. As it has the needed 2 electrons for shell K, it has no room for donating or receiving electrons, making it incapable of reaction. This incapability for forming bonds makes an element inert.
