GROOVY BABY! Fully Customized 1977 Chevrolet Hippy Van! Abandoned for 29 Years! Will it Run?!?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We saved this 1977 Chevrolet Caravan full-size van from being scrapped after sitting in a backyard for 29 years! It was fully customized both inside and out when it was brand new! Let's see if we can get the 350 V8 engine to breathe fire once again and get it back on the road! If you're interested in owning this classic piece of late 1970s history, it could be yours for only $1,200 American dollars! It's still in the as shown condition but I did find a pair of rear leaf springs that just might fit! Obviously they need installed as we've moved onto the next project. As always, thanks for watching!

wow! this took me back in time. I'm 68 years old and back in 72, I was shopping in our local junkyard when I came up on a cool van with the side ripped open. I looked in and it had red shag carpet and there were hundreds of plants 6 inches tall growing on the floor. They had sun and rain to reproduce Columbian plants again. You have to remember the seedless varieties hadn't been perfected yet. I think Duff would have liked it better if it had the doghouse cover on it. Loved the video.

When I see party vans, I think of our next door neighbor Jim in the 80's. He had a new at the time early 80's Chevy Shorty van, no rear windows, metallic Maroon, lots of chrome, with matching Maroon custom shagging interior. It also had a small matching Maroon speed boat. Jim was a cool dude. He also had an 80's V8 Monte Carlo in similar Maroon color. The Monty got traded in for a new 1989 Turbo Chrysler Conqust TSI widebody with the rear window louvers. The Mitsu Starion twin. It was white, but in true Jim fashion, the interior was Maroon leather. I remember seeing that sharp edged Conquest body as a new car when I was a kid, full of digital displays, Turbo engine, amazing alloy wheels, it seemed like I was looking at the future. My father also had a bit of a party van when I was very young. An early 60's Ford Falcon van, or E100 econoline. It looked normal on the outside, just a white Straight 6, three on the tree work van on OE wheels. It was a short van with no windows. It was insulated inside, and covered with a purple fur material, similar to the roof of your van. It was purple fur interior on all the walls and ceiling, with purple shag carpet on the floor. No rear seats, just bean bag chairs. When I was 2-5 years old, I always rode on top of the engine, in between the front seats. The warm hum of the straight six always put me to sleep. My parents couldn't take me anywhere farther than 10 minutes away without me passing out on the engine lid.

Had a friend named Don with a early 70's Chevy van. We called it the Don-O-Van.. Your van brought back a foggy memory of a Saturday night in the early 80's cruising rural Iowa doing bong hits and drinking a fifth of Brass Monkey. Our buddy Don was driving and managed to get us lost in the middle of nowhere in the dark. It didn't help he was already lost within the corridors if his own mind (acid).. lol. Took a while but we turned up in a one horse town with a single bar so we figured out which way was home from there. Not sure how we survived our youth.

Best van story...My dad bought a '78 g10 for $150, in '93, from a guys field. The guy had stored bags of garbage in it for years because after he had rebuilt the 350, he couldn't get it to start. I had to pick ground in potato skins and other organic crud out of the brown shag carpet. It had a "U" shaped wrap around in the back that converted to a bed, and swivel buckets up front. Somehow or another the guy messed up the wiring. Dad got it sorted out, we put headers (yes headers) 2" pipe and glasspacks on it, did the bodywork and painted it jet black (gloss). He had 8" truck rallys with 31/10.5/15s on it. we jumped every set of railroad tracks in town. He named it Jumpin' Black Flash...it was a gas. Great video...If only I needed a van...

Best thing is the big Chevy 350. Just don’t overload yours top-heavy like I did mine snd roll it at the lake like I did. Those front seats should rotate around 360. The fact you literally called it free candy van at one point was a winner. Honestly wish I had the money to buy this and do something with it in regards to drivetrain work. Honestly it's well worth taking the motor out putting a set of manifolds back on it replacing the exhaust brakes leaf springs fixing that unit in the roof in the back that kind of thing. I haven't seen one of these Vans with that little rust since I was a kid anything I've looked at in the last 10 years there may be 10 or 15 years old and they're rusted like they're from the 1960s. Vans like that are getting pretty rare especially in that condition underneath. Hearing somebody say the words yanking the drivetrain off of it just made me feel sick inside really hope somebody grabs her and does something decent with it. Van is well worth putting the work into. You wouldn't want to see what they're charging five grand for here in Nova Scotia!

If you drive out the roll pin the accelerator pump lever pivots on, you can install the carb top straight on, making it a LOT easier to get all the metering rods in the right place. I would remove the secondary metering rods hanger and install them after I got the top back in the carb. My folks had a 74 GMC van, and one evening Dad and I removed the doghouse and the air cleaner and went out on the highway. I learned more about how a Qjet worked under partial and full throttle. We probably burned 5 gallons of gas that night, but I think it was worth it. Great video!

I know this video is over a year old as I post but like everyone else, I have a van memory: My dad had a '74 Ford SuperVan (a rreal thing,.look it up) with a 302 v8. It was work spec. Sliding right-sise door, and barn doors in the back. Inside, nothing beyond the front 2 sests. It did have rear A/C but think delivery van. My dad put shag into it, blue velvet seats our of an Old/Buick, built a removable table, cabinet for a cooler & storage, and a seats that converted to a bed in the back..This was the late '70s & no sest belt laws, so us kids just sat, played, walked all around as we floated down the road with Manalow, Elvis, the Saturday Night Fever 8 tracks rotating to provide tunes. Good times.

From my wrench turnin' days of the 60's & 70's some of the most wisest advice I received: "Keep the instruction sheets from that first QuadraJet carb you rebuild... and follow the exploded-assembly view it every time you rebuild one!" In 2020 terms: "Look it up on KZread man!" The only other major cringe moment was tossing those rare 45's around and scratching them up. Major OUCH! On the upside, "Vanning" is very much a thing again and those 70's Chevy vans especially are in high demand. Someone stole my 100 mile 1977 Chevy "Shorty Van" a few years back, and if I lived closer I would snatch up this project van in a heartbeat, before you knew what you were giving away! A '77 Chevy Van with 350 & A/C that runs is easily worth 3 times the $1,200 you are asking. This one is virtually rust free except where some dummy packed in fiberglass insulation in the door panels. Anyone serious would plan on replacing the exhaust system anyways after 45 years. lol

Bud, when you first made the Now THAT'S Thinking With Your Dipstick Jimmy joke and posted it, I almost cried laughing because I've always loved that commercial. Another really funny one was the Geico commercial with "the First Heckler" where he told the jouster that his "armor was forged by a feeble fingered peasant woman". Maybe you could use a quote from that in the future...lol

I had a 75. The lack of rust says maybe that is original miles. Bonus, back in the day, if you had a four bl in a truck or van, you likely had a four bolt main block. Mine was. Mine also had headers and NO mods made to anything to make them fit if you use the right ones. The van wore out long before they rusted out. since i own two G20s a 71 and a 79 i really got a kick out of this episode. They really are good vans and easy to work on, the gas tanks are easy to pull. I must say you really should have worn the long haired wig in this episode. Good show tonight.

You keep pick up every vehicle that I like, the G-van, the Nomad chevelle wagon, 4 door Pimpala..... I need to live closer so I can just buy all your "will it runs" so you can recycle the "will it run" videos in 15 years after they just sits in my field. Haha.
