As a young bass player in the mid-1970s, my first band was multi racial. The brothers in the band taught this white boy all about 70s funk and this song is still at the top of my list. Love it! Rock on kids!

Right there with you guy. I left on the road with a disco, show band in 1980 playing bass at 17 years of age. Multi racial, a female singer, and blew everybody's mind as the little white boy who could thump and slap his ass off. Good times!

They were SUPER STARS long before FIRE came out. "SKINTIGHT" was their first Platinum ALBUM. Their bedroom ballads " Honey" "Sweet Sticky Thing" "Heaven Must Be Like This" plus many more are one of the greatest funk R+B BANDS EVER !!!
Real musicians who played their own instruments. Someone already suggested Skin Tight which is even MORE funkier than this which doesn't seem possible but is IMO. Love your reactions

We used to play the Ohio Players song "Love Rollercoaster" as we were warming up in High School in the late 70's for basketball games, way up in New Hampshire. Love Rollercoaster was also featured in the movie Beavis and Butthead Do America, Has to be seen to be fully appreciated, Band B in Las Vegas, dancing to the Oho Players. Unbelievable.

Best show I ever saw---Paramount Theatre, Portland, Oregon, 1977---K.C. & The Sunshine Band and the Ohio Players as the opening band ...it was hard to say who out-performed who that night, but every one of the 9,000-plus crowd went home happy, sweaty and exhausted from dancing so much!!
The legendary Sugar Foot on lead vocals. RIP. You guys need to watch the video for the song. SugarFoot had the coolest Fro.
I can tell you, if it's funk, r+b you want, it needs to be The Dazz Band (another) from Ohio (Cleveland). They are top 5 of all-time r+b funk. Another really good band (again from Ohio, it must the water) is Lakeside. Not as well-known (Coolio sampled) Fantastic Voyage, their biggest hit.
great reaction! their music can fit in any time of music history. many hits and classics...keep them on your rotation.
My favorite lyric not just based on the words but how he sings it is “I'm 'bout to choke from the smoke, got to tighten up my stroke”. It’s…well…FIRE!

Dang this takes me back to when I was a youngin! Y'all talkin bout the skatin rink, I remember doin my own showin off to a lot of the old groove tunes! Lol
These guys were huge when I was in high school.
First concert I ever went to when I was 16. Still have that song on my phone!!!
Ohio players have deep history. They used to have a female singer, Towanda Barnes. Northern soul classics like "you don't mean it".
That drum semi-solo towards the end always got me moving.
You should listen to their hit “Love Rollercoaster”. All of the great Funk Soul bands of the 70s came out of Ohio.
The Brothers Johnson "Stomp" will get you groovin'
The bruddahs had the BEST album covers back in the day! LOL!
One of the greatest songs of my childhood.
I was grade 6 when this beast hit the airwaves. Amazing funk
They were incredible and we danced to them at parties all the time. Their song called roller coaster is totally iconic. It's got this really cool beat Rhythm to it that I've heard sampled many times over many years following.
One of the greatest songs EVER!
BJ killing it with the MOVES!!
Sugarfoot is just amazing with his vocals and he plays a double neck Gibson SG the man has skills. This whole band is just a solid music machine, horns, bass, keyboards, drums, conga drums, so much talent.
LOVE Ohio Players!!!! Hope you listen to lots more. Don't forget to listen to Brick House. ✌

How about Multiracial/Brown?🤣2010's Funk Kiwi style, it's not as funky but it's smoother with a fusion of genre's while still retaining that familiar groove. Listen to L.A.B (Studio versions) - In The Air, My Brother, Personify, Fashion Dread
Literally Fire!!! I had a 75' Volkswagon "Rabbit" with rims and a hatchback... blaring this in between Led Zeppelin and Foghat... I had a play list before there was such a thing ... Pionneer Cassette Deck turned up to 10! Good Times! thanks for your great reactions! gt
VH-1 had a special hosted by QuestLove a few years back called "Finding the Funk" where he goes over the history of funk. The Ohio Players are part of that discussion as well as other funk bands from the Dayton (DayTown!), Ohio area. Anyway, worth a watch for sure.
Did somebody else say this first? This song is FIRE!!
the Ohio Players were on the jukebox at the town pool...i'd play their tunes on it, and you could see everyone get their swagger on...the 70's was such a great time to be alive...so much good music
I recommend you react to these songs by Ohio Players “Pain, Heaven must be like this, I want to be free, Skintight”.

Nobody quite like the Ohio Players. Confunkshun, Cameo, Slave, Lakeside, and so many others tried but couldn't touch Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner and the rest of the players - they ruled the R&B Funk and no one compares with them to this day. Love the songs you mentioned (especially "I Want To Be Free" their absolute BEST!) and would ad "Funky Worm," "Ecstasy," "Jive Turkey," "It's Your Night," & "Sweet Sticky Thing" and really too many others to keep naming.
Yes, BJ, that was "PLAYERISHESS". I like your new word. This song was a big hit at the discos and clubs back in the day. I remember grooving to this song many times. Loved your reactions!
YES! Rollerskating! This was an item back in 1973 when we skated. I was 15 going on 16. All it took was hearing the fire engines in the beginning and we were beatin' it to the floor. And, yes, we did the boogie moves while we skated. I so miss that so much. We also jammed to Love Rollercoaster which was the favorite. Skin Tight was also played. If you haven't done Love Rollercoaster yet, you need to. You would not be disappointed.
THE 70'S WAS THE GREATEST HITS IN MUSIC INDUSTRY BACK IN THE DAYS. THEY WERE CALLED THE GROOVES BACK THEN WHICH THEY CALLED THE HITS NOW, I'VE GOT MORE HITS FOM THE 70'S THEN I DO ANY YEARLY RECORDS FOR WHICH I STILL GROOVE TO WHENEVER I BE DRIVING TO FROM HERE TO FAR.
they were extremely underrated
It’s a pre-disco song. Ohio Players and Earth Wind & Fire dominated funk in the early to mid-1970s. I bought this record along with Love Rollercoaster and wore them both out. This is a vintage Soul Train era jam.
These guys had quite a few dance club hits. Definitely a groove more than a vibe. 👍
One of my all-time favorite bands EVER!!! The Ohio Players are among the gods of Funk music along with Sly & the Family Stones and Parliament......Just Funky!!!! Great musicianship!!! I feel this BJ singing and expressing this song to Asia!!!! lol.......y'all Hahaa
Ohio Players were also known for their risque album covers with the foldout front and back -my mom had a fit when she saw those covers!!
The Ohio Players were all about that Funk in the 70's. Great songs by the Ohio Players are ""Love Rollercoaster"(1975) "Sweet Sticky Thing"(1975) "Skin Tight"(1974) "Jive Turkey"(1974). Other great Funk music in the 70's were B.T. Express "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)"" (1974) and Slave "Just A Touch Of Love" (1979) and "Slide" (1977). Also a great Funk group out of Miami was Cameo with "Shake Your Pants" (1980) and "Flirt" (1982) with many others.
The 70’s, the era of the best black funk bands giving you that good dance grooves and slow dance love songs! The Ohio Players were one of best and most talented singers, songwriters and musicians , you bought the albums, grooved to the music , and went to see them live in concert. This song was the hottest of that year, on the radio , at the parties and clubs everywhere! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ohio Players always had the sexiest album covers.
Yes!!!! This and so good. Was suggested during the live! They have a few other songs too, I’m from Ohio so this makes me happy to hear!
Pain, Pleasure, Ecstasy, and Climax...those were the names of the Ohio Players' early albums. And then they woke the world up with the albums Skin Tight, Fire, and then Honey. There are a ton of great cuts to pull from those albums.
If you can sit still while this is playing, you're dead! 😂🔥🔥
Still one of my favourites. Especially Marshal “Rock” Jones on bass.
Aside from my childhood memories, whenever I hear this song now, I also think about The Movie Roll bounce
In the 1970s, I went to school in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which has a fairly large black population. In Grade 5-6, I heard a lot of funk including the Ohio Players, and it led to this Jewish boy’s lifelong love of all things funky. Loved Soul Train too!
Still an A+ jam after all these years! Check out Sweet Sticky Thing!
Watch the live version its awesome!!
Lord, I remember dancing the bump to this one until I couldn't dance anymore. Great song to dance to with someone you were into, it could get pretty r-rated...

I wore this cassette out in my car back in the day. saw them live in 76 at the l.a. sports arena..Was FIRE!
Fire and Love Rollercoaster by these guys may be two of the most funked out songs ever. And they were all real and talented musicians
The ohio players gave the instrumental to stevie wonder. The band hadn't titled it yet. After he heard it he said that's fire. Then they went off of the title & wrote the lyrics.
There had to be an alternate mix of this song (with the sirens turned off) for a lot of radio stations to play it. Back when radio stations considered it important to be a member in good standing of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), they had to abide by the NAB Code of Good Practices. That included not airing sirens, as doing so could cause traffic accidents caused by unsuspecting drivers who were listening to their radios and hearing sirens playing then pulling over to the side of the road to let the emergency vehicles (which didn't exist) pass by, while other drivers who weren't listening to the same radio station at the time would have no clue why these other drivers were pulling over. The mix of the song that I remember playing on the radio in the '70s didn't have sirens. So naturally, I find them shrill and annoying. But it's a great example of '70s R&B and funk. The Ohio Players had quite a string of hits from about 1976 to about 1981 or so. Check out "Skin Tight" and "Love Rollercoaster." Get on the floor and dance! By the way, I see that you're in the Dallas/Fort Worth "metroplex." I spent about 25 years there "playin' the hits" on the radio and livin' life to the fullest. And when I think of this era of '70s R&B, I can't help but think back to a song that we played on KNUS-FM (98.7 FM, now an oldies station called K-Love) that very few top 40 stations in America had the cajones to play. But I added it to our playlist, and DFW listeners went wild. Now think just how totally outrageous it was in 1975 to hear Leon Haywood sing "I Wanna Do Something' Freaky To You." Check it out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fWyDvNexZsvWYbQ.html and get nasty!
yup, platform shoes and bell bottom pants ... and that was for the men. A little more modern version of when we wore Zoot Suits.
