Grocery store cat may face eviction
Local grocery store Top Ten Produce has long been home to feline mascot, Mickey. But a recent ruling from Vancouver Coastal Health has now threatened the cat's future at the store, upsetting both staff and customers.

Any sensible lawmaker will see that the law is full of loopholes. "...must not allow the presence of a live animal..." also goes for the presence of rats, the natural prey for Mickey. The reduction in health risks from rats getting into food storage far outweighs whatever risk any well-kept, working cat like Mickey pose to his/her immediate vicinity. Mitigating health risks which come from the presence of a cat is also easier and can be done much more effectively than controlling pests like rats or roaches. Anyone with three functioning brain cells can figure this out. But some people these days...😑

When I visited Vancouver, it was a beautiful place; but I was horrified when I accidentally wandered in to a drug safe zone of junkies shooting up and wandering the streets in Gastown. I’m a former addict, so to see how degenerate such a beautiful city’s streets are really shocked me. None of the politicians care.
Growing up in the 70s here in Ireland we had a baker with two cats they sat in the shop while he kneaded bread and they often had flour on them lol nobody minded and everyone loved them and it didn't affect the delicious gorgeous produce the baker made . When I visited Holland about five years ago or so there are many cats in bars cafes coffee houses ect I was in heaven lol . In this world at the moment filled with wars poverty crimes and horrible things how can anyone be so miserable and complain about a beacon of joy and happiness that the wee cat brings to so many people ,he was the heartbeat of the shop and some dried up old cow stopped that .

My mom has severe health problems from once getting MRSA in her lungs, apparently...but along with chronic breathing problems now, she has psoriatic arthritis - misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis for almost 2 decades, which is treated differently and negatively affected her - along with a chronic weak immune system, and she has very sensitive cat allergies (she has been receiving "exposure therapy" on and off for years now, but still has to limit her daily exposure)...... Okay now that we know how sensitive her allergies are, she herself showed me this news story, angry that someone would call in a complaint about this cat and that she thinks a cat like this, especially in this COVID/post-COVID world, is something that can bring a much more positive atmosphere to stores like this, and even said she believes that we could see less angry/aggressive customer interactions/confrontations if there was something like a cat or dog that can be emotionally therapeutic in such a hectic world. And if she would start to notice her eyes getting watery or feeling burn-y, or her nose running more or coughing more when she's shopping here or shortly after leaving, she would just go to a different store, because she wouldn't want her allergies or sensitivities to become everyone else's problems. Unfortunately, I guess there will always be those people who just refuse to adapt to whatever limits they get handed in life, who refuse to "suffer alone," and make their problem become the responsibility of everyone else! We can all either learn to adapt to the world around us, or try to force the world around us to adapt to us and our specific needs.

The one that filed complaints: "The cat took our jobs."
They seriously said they don't recognize a cat as pest control (1:00) despite the fact that practically every civilization in human history dating back thousands of years has employed cats at one point or another to keep rodents in check? Wow. I'm pretty sure what they meant was since they can't control the cat, they won't acknowledge it's usefulness.

This cat is actually providing a service that benefits everyone. And yet no one says anything to those people who bring their fake "service" dogs to the store and put them in the shopping carts. Since the time of the ancient Egyptians, cats have been used to keep the rodent population down for human's food supplies. But I guess some people think spraying pesticides is better. Personally, I rather have the cat around.

To those that prefer pesticides, you might want to re-think that! I was poisoned by too much pesticide exposure years ago....and to this day I have seizures, and asthma attacks whenever I am around most chemicals. Some of the same chemicals that are in pesticides are also in colognes, perfumes, air fresheners, scented laundry products, floor and countertop cleaners, hair products....you name it!! @@LucasTheBoi No, we definitely domesticated dogs first. There's discovered remains of dogs (as well as their wolf ancestors) with humans over ten thousand years before the first settled agricultural societies. Dogs were useful for hunting, and we were hunter-gatherers before our ancestors turned to farming. This "agricultural revolution" began roughly around 10,000 BCE, and only after that is when we start seeing evidence of cats cohabitating with human settlements and being buried with humans.

I see my Canadian tax dollars hard at work on crucially important issues like this! A sweet, friendly cat who is clearly loved by all and who has spent the last ten years of his life in this store, keeping mice and rats from multiplying, now getting kicked out. It's been a decade and no one has ever gotten sick or been hurt because of Mickey. On the contrary, he is clearly loved and admired by the store's customers. He's probably good for their mental health! What's crazy is that we have two cat cafes in Vancouver where food and drink are served throughout the day, without any problems. How can that be allowed, but Mickey's not allowed in the store? I think there are bodega cats all throughout the world and you don't hear of people dropping dead because of it. As long as Mickey's happy and being treated well, and he's not peeing on the food, I don't see the problem here.

Who said that someone is unhappy? I watched it again and didn’t hear anyone say they were unhappy with the cat there or said it was bad thing the cat was in the store. Didn’t you watch this video where the reporter said it’s the law, under the health inspection law. I love cats, dogs and all animals but it isn’t safe to have a domestic pet inside a grocery store. Fur sheds all over, people have bad allergies, also dander flies in the air and if the cat goes outside a lot, it could attract flees and flees will jump onto humans if they’re close by or just petting a cat. You don’t see many cats inside a store where food is sold. But no one said they’re unhappy.. Health inspectors are just doing their job for healthy and safety laws.
