I must write this in English so more people understand: when I moved to the Netherlands there was no one who could help out in this basic day to day things so I had to learn the hard way. Looking like a fool hundreds of times, always avoiding to use English, and not understanding most things that were being said to me. Still I pushed and always tried to learn from errors. There were a few (and they still exist) blood sucking languages "coaches" that would charge you a fortune just to go to the shops with you and learn Dutch in "real life scenarios". These people are criminals. You Kim, on the other hand took your precious time and posted this free video on KZread, which I am sure will help lots of people. This is pure gold if you just want to get by without ever using English in the daily basic interactions. My advise is that you do more, many more of these. At the Pharmacy, in the supermarket cashier, all the way to "at the doctor" etc. In order to help you finance the purchase to have better gear to films these real life situations, you should start a crowdfunding campaign. Kudos also to your "cameraman"! I will share this video on all my social media channels.

Thank you so much Luis for your great comment! It just makes my day! I have a crowdfunding platform, which is Patreon, and a lot of lovely students are backing my project! It's amazing! I have great gear (it's a Rode microphone) but I was just unlucky that it was "kapot" ;) They are repairing it, or I will get a new one. For me it's more important that I get support for making it possible to make my videos because it's so time-consuming that I work a lot less now, meaning I have less income. So a small monthly contribution goes to the groceries I can buy at the market ;) hahaha Have a great day! 🌞

@@romanakondrlova247 Kim is super talented and highly qualified language educator plus she is a good actor too so she excels at that. A linguistics PhD. but only crazy ones learn Dutch or Irish. Little real life use unless you are moving there and even there English is well understood and spoken. Few others come to her calibre I juggle some 60 language teachers with 22 languages so I KNOW She has set the bar pretty high for online language courses. Do support her.

@@sleepsmartsmashstress740 that is your point of view. Whether or not there is a real life use of learning Dutch, in my opinion, depends on your personal circumstances. There are quite a few countries where speaking Dutch can be very useful. If you are living in these countries or frequently traveling to them, then I believe there is what you call ‘real life use’.
I like how slow you speak, I can actually hear every single letter of the words you speak. Most of the Dutch I have heard before was spoken pretty fast. I really like your videos🤗

aww, I love videos like this one. I am an English teacher back in my home country and that was how I enjoyed learning (with daily life real situations). If you could make more videos like this one, I think it will be very useful (like ordering food at a restaurant, getting a train, and so on) :) I am learning Dutch as I am going to move to the Netherlands and find your explanations really clear. Dank U

I actually found you through the Ecolinguist channel about a month ago, with the "Can English speakers understand Dutch" videos. I had a lot of fun with those (and hope you and Norbert will collab on more videos!). I'm intermediate level in German, so that helps a LOT in understanding Dutch. A fluent speaker would have an easier time than I do, but I enjoy the challenge and enjoy seeing the similarities between Germanic languages :) So I'm subscribing to this channel as well :) Bedankt voor de geweldige video's!

Just discovered your channel, I really like your videos and the fact that I understand you perfectly while you're explaining everything in Dutch without turning on the English subtitle. I've been learning Dutch at home for some time now and in the beginning I had this impression that men usually speak better or more clearer for my ears and I found flemish easier than Dutch (maybe because of the pronounciation). I changed my opinion when I saw your first video (it was the topic of werkwoorden met voorvoegsels). I live in Spain so I don't have many opportunities to put the knowledge into practice as I don't know anyone who speak Dutch here but your videos help me to keep my mind updated. I appreciate your work and all the effort you put into these videos! Ik wou dat ik je eens op een dag in Den Haag kan ontmoeten :) Prettige weekend!

I don't want to tell you how to your job, but as a general practice it's always good to have redundancy in any critical components. For example: If your camera fails you probably have your phone as a backup camera. The same would apply to audio. Just plug a cheap lavaliere mic into your phone (a decent yet cheap one is the Boya BY-M1 for 17 euros on amazon), and always have that running as well. Btw, I just found your channel today and so far it's awesome 🙂

This was a good video for me. When I visit the market, it is a scary place because the noise and my slow Dutch makes it very hard to keep up with the shopkeepers. I don't live in NL. I have to pause like every second bc I have Dutch subtitles and am trying to pronounce everything as I watch your videos hahaha. The slow pace and explanations at the end really help! I'm still a little confused by the informal vs formal language. I'm a native Spanish speaker so I understand the difference exists, but not in Dutch yet.
@sleepsmartsmashstress740
2 жыл бұрын
You can partly fix the problem with frequent pausing by slowing the playback speed. Too practice speaking Dutch type down the text of the subtitles or any other text. The formal vs information works in Dutch German French all languages just as in Spanish. Try to figure out why Dutch is giving you problem. It is same as tu vs vosotros in Spanish. If you are not fluent at reading Dutch then hold of on the speaking part for a while until you can read very well. My better suggestion would be just try to understand speech first. I learned French Spanish etc. , just by watching TV or youtube. I am doing the same for Dutch. I am fluent in German that helps a lot. But when Kim speaks I try to catch 3-5 words in a sentence and read off one or two meanings. Dont try to grasp the whole sentence perfectly. Given time your brain would make this up like zig saw puzzle. I am a brain doctor and speak 22 languges Never bought a book Never took written notes. I just type on word files.
@sleepsmartsmashstress740

Another suggestion I would make is to learn German first. There has to be very good reason for anyone to learn Dutch. German is lot more popular and useful and when you are good with German, learning Dutch would be a piece of cake. I know it is telling you to stop Dutch but that is not bad idea actually. Put it on hold for 3 years to learn German first. It is easier with pronunciation than crazy Dutch with kh kh (Ja ja) sounds. If you want to go berserk with pronouncing try learning Irish. it is crazy
