just got mine last week. seems to work really well out of the box. i'm sure i'll fine tune it soon.

There is a nut/bolt up above the depth stop that you can adjust to fine tune that measurement. It is a single adjustment that will impact all the stops.

I had problems with the dewalt 735. Which is the bigger dewalt. The bed is made of sheet metal and warps if you have a cold shop. Granite seemed like the affordable solution.

Thanks for the honest review. Did you have problems planing boards wider than 6 inch? Some guys on the grizzly website complained about it

No, I didn't but I didn't give it much of a shot. I actually returned it within the return window and bought the G0891. I need to put out an update video. I will try to do that very soon. The reason I switched was that I wanted a truly "pro" machine. I can't afford that, so the G0891 was a good compromise. I love that machine. This machine, I could get it stay relatively snip free for a while, but then it would go out again. The only way to completely correct this would be to build a custom bed for it, there are many videos that show you how. For the price and for a "lunchbox" planer, out of all them... this is the one to go with in my opinion. Thanks for watching and the comment.

Good review! The information that had the biggest impact for me wasn't in the video. It was your reply to omer keinan that you returned this planer for a D0891! Is that the G0890 with the helical blades? I didn't see that G0891 model on their the grizzly website. That certainly looks like a wonderful planer! I was considering the G0815 but at 388 lbs without in-feed or out-feed tables and designed to support table rollers I may end up with a G0505 or the Dewalt D735. Thanks for taking the time to review this item.

Yes, that is the 0890 with the helical cutter head. I really like it. I need to get that review up. The 0891 is a completely different animal of course and quite expensive in comparison, 3x the cost. I had the 735 too, I returned it because it has the same snipe problems and just isn't robust of a machine. You can put a better head and build a proper table for it, which just takes time and more money, or just buy a much bigger, beefier machine to start - which is what I opted to do.

I don't know if you are still checking for comments or not. but curious if you still like this planer. Would also like to know if there is any kind of carriage lock? Thanks for a very in depth video.

Thanks for the review! Grizzly planets arriving damaged seems to be a consistent theme in review and comment forums. I’m still leaning towards buying a Wahuda planer which has the spiral vice helical cutter but has other features the Grizzly doesn’t. One question: are the carbide inserts two- or four-sided? Makes a big difference in long-term costs.

They used to have a PA location where you could pick up the machinery yourself. That way it would not be damaged. Unfortunately, they closed the PA location. It's a shame to do that to the customers who were loyal for years.

If I recall correctly, they were 4 sided. Don't quote me on that though. Their support is very good and it would be a 3 min call, generally.

I just saw a review of the Wahuda and it is not a helical cutter. It is spiral but the cutters are perpendicular to the wood you feed and has not angle.

@Michel Cote exactly. I was disappointed, I would have gone with the Wahuda dual, if they slightly skewed each of the blades. Also there isn't very many of them either and thus the need for 2 speeds and higher rpms. Having their blades perpendicular to the surface cut makes it more of a chopping effect (and many reviews show thin lines left that have the be sanded off (having more of them would resolve that). But the big showstopper for me is that each of those blades don't cut into the wood with a slith skew creating more of a slicing action. Additionally pictures of the cutterhead doesn't even look like a spiral and the staggering is an odd pattern.

Did you have an issue getting this to move up and down out of the box to get the foam out?

  • @rabbitholejunkies

I did not. Are you speaking to the foam block that is between the carriage and the inside top? If so, no I just attached the handle and lowered the carriage.

Same as the Craftsman from Lowes.. Painted different color is the ontly difference.. You'll never get a 2 post planer snipe free. You can get it to a point that is tolarable but it'll never go away completley. The head of the unit moves. No way of changing that..

Makes sense to me. I do need to do an update to this. I can get it to run snipe free for about 10 passes, then it wonks up again. I think I am going to swap it with something else with 4 posts and little larger.

The only things that set this planer apart from any other cheap benchtop planer is the granite table and the spiral cutter. I have a cheap WEN planer that works great and cost WAY less than this Grizzly. All planers have snipe until you adjust your feed tables to mitigate it. My point is the price on this is too high for what you get.

Other than the granite table and spiral cutterhead? You mean the two parts of the machine that make a noticeable difference in cut accuracy and quality? It's incredible they're able to put those features in at the price point they managed. Nothing wrong with straight blades and I don't blame you for not being able to justify the price, but helical blades are game changing. They produce a much smoother cut, last longer and are much cheaper and easier to replace. For anyone that uses a planer enough to need to regularly sharpen or replace straight knives the increased helical cutter cost will easily pay for itself over the life of the machine.

Don’t give reviews for a living. I almost fell asleep listening to you hem and haw. This was not a good review
