    @@WoodenThingsAndStuff Thanks for the review. I am getting ready to buy my first planer. I do mostly smaller projects...and plan to be thicknessing cuts off of my (Rikon) bandsaw. Nightstands, boxes, crafty stuff like that - 4/4 thickness and below. To reduce the time I spend with my hand plane. I was sold on the Dewalt, but now I am swaying towards the Rikon. I have their benchtop bandsaw and I like it. And I like the idea of switching out single cutters as opposed to the full blades. Any words of wisdom or caution? Thanks again for the review!!

    @@kevinklein1826 I think Rikon sits in a good place in the market for hobbiests like us in terms of quality for the price. Cutters are only two sided instead of 4 like you get on somehing like a Shelix head, but I'll never go back to straight knives now that I've gone segmented. Just about to turn mine for the first time almost a year in, but I put some dirty wood and epoxy resin through them, which doesn't help with longevity.

    Currently one can buy the Rikon vrs WEN at around $100 more, lowest I saw WEN for at reputable (big box) store is ~$400. While they look very much the same and maybe from the same factory, the Rikon is a 2 speed feed while the WEN is single speed. The warr is 3yr vs 2yr, maybe not a big deal. I may look into part availability between the two ...

    The blower on the 735 ejects chips and dust crazy effectively. This one doesn't have a "blower" but it spits them out pretty effectively. I just vacuum it out after each planing session to make sure the gears don't get gummed up with dust and chips.

    I didn't, but I would venture a guess and say it might actually be the same planer from the same factory with different paint job and branding. Even if I had looked at that planer, though, I'm guessing it would have ended up more expensive by the time it got to me. That 499 is likely USD, so that's somewhere around $700 CAD already, before shipping. Plus I'd get hit with another bill for it coming across the border. I'm in the market for a planer and while this model and the WEN are both "helix" style, they do offer easier blade swaps than a traditional full straight blade design... you can replace just one cutter (rotate it), as opposed to the full blade saving $$$. They may not cut quite as good or quietly as a real helix, but are far cheaper with most of the same advantages. I'm giving this one a serious look since it offers two speeds, as opposed to the single speed the WEN has.

    The DeWalt is much loader with the stock 3 blade head, but when you swap it out for the Skechers helical head that has like 40 blades on it..The helical head is much quieter, it sounds almost like a big drill motor. It's also slightly less noisy when you plane with it, than the stock DeWalt 3blade head. But, from what I hear, the the helical blade head thingy is too much for the DeWalt motor under the DeWalt motor in will end up giving out. So, if that person is listing, do some digging and find a better, stronger motor, and for 3times the money, you can have best darn 13" planer.

    Everyone's on their own path. I can totally see doing the Dewalt and then upgrading to a helical head later thing, because it's $700 (ish) twice instead of $1400 at once. I mean, for $1400 I could get the planer and a couple of nice hand planes to smooth things out after getting things to thickness. There's no right answer for everyone.

    I have a question, if you happen to see this comment. You mentioned saving up for the dewalt so like me you probably have enough income to do this stuff, but not simply enough to buy everything all at once. Now, for me, buying the equipment was probably the cheapest aspect of all this, it's just there was a lot of equipment to buy just to get to stage 1 where I can start building things (milling wood and whatnot) and then I noticed your bench. Hardwood, good respectable bench you have there. Do you mind if I ask how much, ballpark, the material for that bench cost you? The material is the bit that's giving me the most trouble. The cost of lumber has been going up, and up, and up for years now and even just an 4'x8' sheet of 3/4" plywood (not even cabinet grade) is over $100 where I live (bay area california). The prospect of buying that much hardwood to build my own bench (I have one, but it's 2x4s and OSB) seems almost insurmountable at this point. Cheers.

  • @WoodenThingsAndStuff

    @WoodenThingsAndStuff

    9 ай бұрын

    Sorry, I just saw this comment. I do have a 2-part series on building my workbench if you scroll back on my channel that you can check out, but I'll give you the quick info.... It's actually not hardwood. It's made from Douglas Fir that I got at a local lumberyard for relatively cheap. I did accent it with strips of cherry to get it to the width I wanted, but even that was one of the cheapest hardwoods I could buy at the time at maybe $7/bdft. I don't remember exactly how much it cost, but I bought the cherry one board at a time whenever I had a few extra bucks ($30 every couple weeks is easier to stomach than dropping $300 all at once) and the Douglas fir couldn't have been more than maybe $150? I totally agree that good wood is expensive. Try to make a habit of buying good boards (at good prices) when you see them as often as you can. Like I said, it doesn't hit so hard when it's $30 or $60 a dozen times over the course of 6 months as it does when you suddenly need $700 for wood for a project. As another example, I have probably 120 board feet of sapele waiting for me to build a sideboard that I paid probably $1000 for. But I bought it a couple boards at a time over the course of about a year, so it didn't hurt that badly. Hope this helps.

    I've addressed this before in the comment section, but I don't blame you for not reading them all. Wen doesn't (or didn't at the time, anyway) have a retailer in Canada, and even on Amazon, it was more expensive than what I paid for the Rikon, and I couldn't have even seen it in real life before buying, which I don't like. If it's a comparable tool for less money, by all means take a go at it. A lot of tools in this "middle tier" probably come off the same assembly line (or out of the same factory) with different paint jobs or slightly different parts. I think my King Industrial jointer is the same as Rikon's, Cutech's and Craftex's 8" benchtop, for example. Wen probably has one, too.

    DeWalt 735 is def a bench top tool. BUT for a bench top tool it’ll hurt you when lifting it by yourself. I had mine on the ground when I got it and after I lifted it once my back was out for a week. Played leap frog between two Black & Decker workmates to never ever have it on the down ground. I put it on a cart I made with a chip box under. Based on the Rockler plans. The Rikon looks like a good one. Glad they offer a hybrid cutting deal. Turning the cutters and the cost is nice. Flat blades haven’t let me down yet but I’m not throwing very pretty wood through.

    At 7:17, you claim the cutter is "helical" style. It is actually spiral, not helical. Helical cutters are arranged in a helical pattern that puts the cutting edge of the individual cutters at roughly 6° to the rotating axis, which results in a slightly shearing cut. Spiral cutters like the ones in the Rikon are parallel to the cutter axis, same as the two or three blades are in conventional planers. These cutters actually chop the fibers, same as a regular blade cutter. The just cut smaller portions at a time. Oh! Then at 7:25 you actually say that. It irritates me that Woodcraft calls them "helical." Further, Woodcraft says that all sides of the inserts are sharp when only two edges are sharp, not all four. I am writing this 14 Dec, 2022, and the Dewalt is $644 on Amazon, while the Nikon is $800 on Woodcraft. I don't want to pay $156 more for Woodcraft to lie to me. Shame on you Woodcraft. @11:50 you haven't read the manual, or watched any youtube about the NiKon, or you would know that it has a depth stop and what that is for. It appears to be plastic, which is a shame. When examining that depth stop, your camera points out that the Nikon has elevation screws, which look like they are ACME thread much finer than those on the Dewalt. Dewalt is very proud of their "all four corner" lifting screws, that look like they are around 1"-8 thread. The ones in the Nikon look about half that size with way more than 8 TPI. Metric ACME threads are called Trapazoidal threads. Close to the same as ACME but not identical. The Dewalt is louder. Dewalt won't put the noise specs on their website and they don't publish them in any ad I've seen. I like the "almost no" snipe. I have heard that the chips plug up. I'd like to know if you have had that problem. The Dewalt is 42Kg [92 lb.]. Then when you ran the Doug Fir though, you saw some chip-out on one side, but didn't look at the other side. If you looked only at the wrong way side, that wasn't clear. Doesn't quarter sawn plane better than regular sawn? I liked the video even though I disagreed with some things. Conclusion: Even though I didn't see any plugging on the chip exhaust, I'm going with the Dewalt with an exhaust fan and $156 cheaper. If I want a helical head, I'll buy one later and get a real helical for double the price of a spiral. For the things I do, I might be able to live with three blades. Thanks for the info.

    Good analysis. I agree with everything you've said. I'll see if I can address a couple of your questions... I still have "almost no snipe" and what I do get is easily managable. I've raised the infeed and outfeed slightly, but I still get enough to notice, but only if you're realllllly looking. When I bought it, there was only a $50 difference between the Rikon and the Dewalt, so it seemed like a no-brainer to go with the segmented head, even if it's not a true "helical." I totally agree with your disappointment that it's only a 2-sided cutter, so you only get one rotation. That being said, I still haven't turned them (will be doing it in January, cuz I have a couple knicks at this point leaving lines) and by now I'd have sent my knives out to sharpen probably twice on my old planer. I hope I can get 4-sided cutters when I replace them after the next turn, but if not, I'm still okay with their longevity. Thanks for your thoughtful input. I'm sure you'll be happy with the Dewalt, just as I'm sure I would have been, too. This one will do me just fine until I (and if I ever) get into a bigger space where I can get a bigger floor-standing model that can take up a bigger footprint.
