Hello. When I had chickens, they would eat freshly broken beer bottles. Glass was pooped out with smooth edges. So maybe they need round and ragged minerals, so that they rub against one another : releasing some minerals. Thank you.

That is a bit scary but the round stones in the gizzard do a nice job at grinding. In nature they eat the round stones to use to grind.

i just bought a 20kg bag of Vanrobaeys super grit and minerals and a 20kg bag of Beyers grit which is oyster shell and redstone . I can get finally crushed oyster shells at a much cheaper price but because it does not come from a pigeon feed company as strange as it sounds i am scared to use them .

Both are excellent grit mixes. You cannot go wrong with these.

I would think a person could use a "tumbler" to round and polish the sharp grit.

That is a good point and maybe a tumbler would make the granite round and remove the edges.

Good video, Frank. It's plausible that some grits could scratch internally and allow bacteria to spread.

That is exactly what is happening. Ground granite irritates the birds gizzard causing issues.

Did you think the gravel used for fish tanks would be OK to use as grit?

There are natural stone gravel for aquariums that should work just great. They would be small river stones. You will need to add shells for calcium

What kind of grit are you feeding? The pigeons love the redstone in the Belgian Grit. If the bird are eating grit like crazy they may be mineral deficient. Do you have all different minerals in front of the pigeons?

Give them everything and let them eat and eat the grits and minerals until they do not eat anymore. They will hit a saturation point and then only eat a little at a time.
