Grinding False Edges: Knifemaker's Friday Five #43

False edges are a common feature on knives. They are ground to resemble cutting edges, but the edge is left unsharpened. In this video, knifemaker Walter Sorrells shares some tips for success in grinding false edges.

Walter, thanks for all the great videos on knifemaking. If I might suggest....try grinding in your swedge/false edge first. It is much simpler. All you need to do is grind an even depth bevel across to get the angle and height you want. When you flip the blade over and start grinding in your main bevels, the taper of the swedge/false edge will take care of itself. Much easier.

The idea of practicing with a wooden knife worked great! Thanks!

Enjoyed the tutorial. I've been around a long time in many trades, Blacksmithing (industrial and ornamental), Silversmithing and Whitesmithing (Pewter) attained Journeyman in each area and the single most important tip I can give is to... Slow down! It's not a race! We learn from those who came before us myself included. I learned the above tip from a Mastercraftsman from Denmark originally. His most important tip he gave me was what I just left for you! Only when you understand what you make is Art... Can you become Master of your Skills.

"Leave yourself room to screw up." That has been my philosophical tenet. Alas, but I have left myself too much room. Not a knife maker, just a knife lover. Enjoy the videos. I have one of these knives, and I carry it often.

This process seems straightforward enough, and thanks for the video. My experience is that it takes a lot of time to develop your even strokes at the grinder without using a jig. Sadly, it seems there's no substitute for practice!

Couple questions first ? Can you re- grind false edge on a parkerized blade 🤔? Second question is can it be re-parkerized too look like New again? 3rd question can I send you a 1970s KAbar and have you do the false edge ? And last and final question who does parkerizing and is good that you'd recommend?

Walter, do you grind the false edge before or after heat treat? I used to do it before but found it caused problems with the tip overheating.

I think that a false edge is fully sharpened. You are showing how to create a swedge in this video. I'm not trying to insult you, it's a confusing term from the days when swords were much more common than they are now.
