Grilling JR #87: Chyna

Спорт

On this episode of Grilling JR, Jim and Conrad profile the life and career of Joan Marie Laurer, better known to us wrestling fans as Chyna. As you're about to learn, tragedy is part of Chyna’s story, starting early in her life. But, there are many highs along the way, as well. The guys explore the highs, the lows, and everything in between, on "The Ninth Wonder of the World" Chyna!

When I was a teenager I looked up to Chyna b/c she represented "girl power" and she was like Xena warrior princess come to life. It was nice having a female role model who wasnt just something pretty to look at. I was a feisty girl myself and seeing a woman kick butt and take names spoke to me. Makes me sad she had such a hard life.

This entire thing just makes me SO sad. It confirms that HHH did in fact, cheat on her with Stephanie. Not only that, they knew how DEVASTATED she was over the love of her life cheating on her with and subsequently leaving her, for the bosses daughter - and decided she was more of a liability than a broken soul that needed to be comforted and told it was gonna be ok. A few months after she left the brand split began and she could’ve been put on a different show than HHH and Stephanie. I’m sure at the time of her departure they had an idea that the brand split was going to happen. Bottom line, they ruined her life. Justice for Joanie !!!!!

I agree, i think they should’ve handled it that way as well. If they could’ve had a real separation of the brands then, that would have been ideal for the situation... and if they that was coming soon, just give her time off to heal her heart a bit, maybe work part time and let her work in movies too. Such a shame. Basically kicking her when she was down (putting it lightly). It sounds like JR got sick of listening to her cry, which is sad. I know he’s not a therapist but she’s human and needed to talk to. I can’t imagine how devastating that break up was. She 100% deserved better.

I HATE to be nitpicky but it drives me nuts when they get the timeline wrong.. ex: “Chyna won the corporate rumble then the next week turned on HHH” .. not how it happened. Chyna turned after the royal rumble. She had a funny match with brisco and patterson before the rumble i wish they discussed. Also, i dont think that was a failed experiment. I loved that storyline as a kid! Led up to Kane vs HHH at WM and then Chyna and him reunite, then they turn on DX, turning HHH into the heel role that really elevated him to the next level. They missed so much in ‘99! Probably my fav year of Chyna. She doesn’t get the credit due taking HHH to main event status. She led him all the way to the WWF title.

Good job, Conrad, taking JR to task here. As for Joanie, I think hit her ceiling anyway. It was believable seeing her throw down with SMALLER guys like Jarrett, Road Dogg or Jericho when she was 180-200lbs of muscle herself but that wasn’t how she was in 2001. She slimmed down big time to get more acting roles and got too small to wrestle guys but equally there weren’t any Divas at the time who could believably beat her ... or Chyna wasn’t interested in selling for them. Look what she did to poor Ivory. Might’ve been different if Victoria or Jazz had been there at the time. I think Chyna’s in-ring career would’ve stalled anyway, even without the backstage misery

She was in a odd situation where she had beaten some of the boys before (Jarrett, Jericho) but in the long run they couldn't keep putting her over against guys anyway and it was hard to sell a woman actually having a fair fight with her after beat many guys and was intercontinental champion.

TY, JR for disclaiming AB her book before hand: tons of misinformation. WE APPRECIATE Honesty. ALOT. I saw CHYNA'S entire career play out in the height of my fandom and it was so UNBELIEVABLE,and not in the good way. Even as a bodyguard she was always out of position and lacked timing. Her wrestling against men devalued her opponents and never elevated anyone. She actually was taking a spot from one of the men on the roster whenever she wrestled. It's just very SAD to hear what happened to her in her personal life as well. Hopefully she hurts NO MORE. R.I.P.

Chyna was OVER bro. Who's spot was she taking? "The One" Billy Gunn? Crash Holly? Gimme a break. Chyna played her part well and made that company a ton of money. She deserved better and so did the fans. It's fine you didnt like her, but to deny her impact and drawing power is asinine.

It's NOT BELIEVABLE, it's LAUGHABLE.. So yeh, you had her wrestling for the IC TITLE.. It's NOT GOOD. ITS NOT. @@jordandupe398 while I agree with some of your points of views I have to admit chynas name in wwe at the time was bigger than jerichos as far as wwe fans so in my opinion she helped Jericho in creating a name for himself they were practically the same size and not to mention it was the attitude era fans back then were different than todays fans we all knew like it was entertainment and fun not real life . We had sable power bomb mark mero , we had rikishi rubbing his butt in peoples faces and not to long ago we had Ronda rousey beating up triple h so it was all for fun not meant to compare to real life in a sense .

I mean listen to how he talked about Sable (who had just as much of an ego as Chyna) and listen to how he talks about Chyna’s ego. Ya know if she did ask for 1 mil can u blame her. Superstars had to pay for their own travel, lodging, and had no health insurance. She had ovarian problems so I'm pretty sure being able to pay her medical bills is important. Plus Vince was not to keen on them receiving third party incomes while under contract. She was a huge mainstream star so most of her money was coming from outside parties like Playboy. Damn right I would have asked for more money. I'm not putting my body on the line 11 months out of the year for peanuts

She was there when DX started. She wss in the Royale Rumble. She was the first IC champ that was a woman.. She went on a hell of a run. The storyline with Eddie was over. She was at the top of the business with Triple H and Shawn. Did she ask for too much? Well at that time. That was a lot of money. There weren't but a few making that kind of money. Steve, Taker, etc. Shawn didn't make that much when he was the hottest in the business. Brett was making that much but he was a lot of years in. Chyna was a star no doubt but that was unreasonable. She wasn't a regular worker.

Problem was the direction they were taking her character she would of never headlined anything or been with top guys or even apart of a main event when she had a story line with ivory . I don’t think she deserved as much as Austin clearly but I do think she deserved better than what she got .

While I agree with a lot of J.R's views on this typical scenario, he isn't giving enough weight to the fact there was now a conflict of interest with her boyfriend leaving her for the boss's daughter. Either way you slice this, the Boss's daughter (boyfriend is culpable too) takes her man, and then J.R inadvertently pushes her out of her job. This should be on the same list as the Montreal Screw Job.
