ILPelideAchille Manlio for me I like sokolov because of his quality and clear notes, more importantly you can feel his own interpretation in every piece. He let out his emotions smoothly and not over exaggerating. I’m not sure if you can get what I’m trying to say since I’m not a native English speaker.

@@hyresw7295 thank you for the reference to Grigory Sokolov. He is from the generation of pianists directly following the generation of Olympians, such as Rubinstein, Arrau, Gilels and Richter. Sokolov is considered to be the best of pianists, performing around the world. And rightfully so. His technical and artistic skills, his depth of understanding composers thoughts, have been praised by other artists, connoisseurs and composers. But there are many other well deserving pianists, that appeal to the public, depending on their tastes and their ability to compare. We, the audience, vote for the title “The best” with our feet and money. Sokolov has proved that.

Bravissimo Sokolov!!
He is one of a kind. I am playing this piece now and this is so far the only version that realizes my imagination. How did he manage to make EVERY note count?!!!

That is the beauty of his interpretation. Every note clean in its own right yet an important part of the whole. Very few pianists, even famous ones, can match him
Absolutely superb playing …a joy to listen to…absolute magic..the music and the playing!
Great great pianist and musician.

this is the top of the top for me. great interpretation.
Wonderful tempo - not racing along prodigiously but actually giving the notes space and expression.
The power comes from how he can make something so interesting for a piece that isn't your typical flamboyant show off piece that all the other grand pianists are always playing.
Excellent!!

The gold standard for this piece is Murray Perahia. But this is among the best interpretations. I also like Magaloff. And Cherkassky. And many others. This is one of the most important keyboard works in the repertoire, so it attracts much talent.

We all have our Personal preferenes, subjective by all measures, but at least we are willing to except different interpretations! No great pianist ever played the same music like others, Schnabel, Rubinstein, Horowitz, Gilels, Brendel, Zimmermann, Sokolov are examples of that.
Was this recorded on a calculator? When it zooms in to his hands

Makes the piano look small like a toy! xD
The reason why I hate Sokolov is that it is too addictive. After listening to this version of the impromptu 100 times, I get annoyed when I listen to other pianists' improvisations. It also takes quite a while to get used to another pianist's improvisation. What's more depressing is when you feel the beauty of various pianists' improvisations and come back to Sokolov's improvisations... All those times of adaptation become meaningless again. The only and best Schubert impromptu for me!!!
imagine if he decided to record all of his concerts, instead of being against recordings what a lost...
Может темп и не плохой ,но нет текущего ручейка,нотки ,как горошины ,звучит резко,форсированно ,хоть пианист и профессор.
He is a fascinating pianist but the semi-detached articulation used here, to me misses the smooth, rolling, wavelike character of this impromptu. Brendel is my preference.

His artistry is unique. Without rushing and smoothing, er smudging, as many do, he delivers perfect, clear sound.
@marksmith3947

The tempo is also slow
.
that non legato
Why doesn't he play it "legato" and the tempo is slower?
Tastes in performance have changed over the years. Sokolov's "perfect" rendition is certainly different from most. It doesn't look back, nor forward. The present is very much Sokolov's. But what about Schubert? This is an Impromptu with the character of a dance with a Viennese lilt. The missing feel of the dance is what holds us back. Sokolov sacrifices the flow of the triplets over the shifting melodic lines in the bass. The B thematic material is also problematic. It is at an unrelated tempo to the opening section. this is disturbing to the breathing and flow. Then the return to very even non-legato triplets with a disconnected melodic line again. It becomes formulaic and on repeated listening, tiresome. Yet from a technical point of view Sokolov is unique and supreme. From a musical point of view , it is for me, playing with huge potential but for the over controlled manner that keeps suffocating it. Now this is not a performance that "accidentally" happens this way. Sokolov has conceived the piece this way . However it is emotionally underwhelming to listen to it this way. .

To be able to pick his nose...is that all you can say about Grigory Sokolov?
Speed up to 1.25x, it sounds better. His touch was way too heavy!
@stonefireice6058
3 жыл бұрын
That’s the artistry of his delivery: no rush, each note sounds clear, without smudging. Too many pianists rush it through with overuse of the pedal.
Krystian Zimerman Schubert Impromptu No 2 is more nice then sokolov Schubert. i dont like this sometime so slow tempo... zimerman is more good speed and more sensitive!!!
I am one of the few people who disliked this video. Of course Sokolov always has perfect technique and control. However, there is always something in his playing that makes me not to enjoy listening to. For example, in the beginning of this piece, instead of flowing notes that like a stream, he breaks it into staccatos. I don't like the effect of that. In the middle section, his phrasing and accents are too "heavy-handed". There are some occasions that I found the music kind of dragging and lacks "forward motion". As a whole, Sokolov's playing is always cold and serious. I believe that every music played by an artist is a reflection of the artist's internal world. I prefer playing with grace and warmth and self confidence. For Sokolov, his music makes me feel that he is not a happy man.

Agree, I am a huge Horowitz fan and when I compare both, Horowitz sometimes makes a lot of little mistakes but that does disturb me in any way, as the overall playing is that warm and intuitively well balanced. With Sokolov I have more the impression as if it is played "intellectually" but it does not really touch me it is too straight, not flexible enough.
