This sums up what a true genius and a wise man is. He was willing to go further to where no one is unable to go just to be able to solve it for mankind for free. He has shown that not everything can be bought by money. If money and prizes solved everything, then a genius man like him won't be needed at all. This is the illness of our society, that too much materialism when he showed to the world that he could live less and be abundant in the inside.

The difference between him and, say, Cédric Villani is that CV sees his role as a spokesman and promoter of math, while GP is not taking on the role. Sure, some "famous" scientists get wrapped up in the fame and money, but most just see themselves as people who address the public. Einstein and von Neumann didn't ham it up, rather, were as helpful as possible in explaining their work.

Imagine just what else he could have contributed in new areas for up & coming fellow peers to delve into....we'll never know. I liken him to another great Soviet mathematician, Alexander Grothendieck who sadly went the route of self-imposed isolation despite his level of brilliance in the field. Despite it all, they are both giants in the mathematics pantheon of rare geniuses & worthy of admiration! 🤔

You got most of this wrong or confused. There are a set of millennial prizes for math problems that had not been solved. All have a $1 million dollar purse. Perelman solved one of these and composed many other math theorems of the most difficult nature. He won the Fields medal which comes with about the same prize and turned that down. The Fields is the Nobel Prize times 4. He has always had difficulty in relationships and lived with his mother in Moscow until middle age. If he is homeless it's his choice, he could go to any top university and get a few hundred thousand a year. Just has to ask.

We don't want to admit that someone with such gifts and likely a wonderful soul that has given us, the world, so much knowledge, is also mentally ill. Logically, and mathematically speaking, there is almost no other reason for his behavior. We all know this, and we all lament it. Most of all, I'm sure, the people that love him.
