Gridserve's 2nd Electric Fuel Station - Norwich

Фильм және анимация

This is a live stream so may not be our best quality video.
Today we're at the opening of the new and second Gridserve Electric Forecourt. This is based on the outskirts of Norwich and houses enough chargers for 36 EV's to charge simultaneously.
It's 45p p/kWh which will average out to approximately 11.5p p/mile.
It's a quick look but should give you an idea of what you can look forward too.

    A great video of what is clearly the future of public EV charging. I was delighted when Gridserve announced their plans for the hubs and I think they are to be applauded for their forward thinking and genuine commitment to build 100 of these incredible new EV charging hubs. I know they are first and foremost a way to rapid charge all types of EV's ....... but I think the design of the building is simply stunning! I will stick my neck out and say these hubs are going to be recognised as iconic structures in their own right in years to come.

    Indeed... In fact, the red Mini Electric James' MG5 was parked next to is run by a wheelchair user, who has also uploaded a You Tube video about this Gridserve Norwich launch - he deliberately chose to park in a 'regular' bay and found that he still had enough room to maneuver his chair around his EV, his argument being that ALL charging bays should be designed to be accessible, which in this case, they are. 👍

    The more infrastructure increases, along with faster charging times, the more battery swapping becomes pointless. What happens to your 8 year battery warranty if you have it swapped out? How could you be sure you wouldn't get palmed off with one that had been abused?

  • @richardgoldsmith7278

    @richardgoldsmith7278

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Brian-om2hh Tesla had designed a great way to compensate for those anomalies when they proposed their battery swap solution : they would hold your original pack for up to 3 months after you swapped yours for another en-route. They would use BMS data to determine the difference in capacity/life between the packs and if you did not return to the first swap station to get your own pack back they would invoice for the difference if you had benefited by not swapping back. You would pay for the service at a much higher rate than taking 20 mins at a supercharger to be on your way in 2 minutes. I think they technically and fiscally cracked it, personally, but I would always wait and charge rather than pay extra to move on, and so did the Tesla owner community at the time apparently, so much so that the service was shelved permanently. If that service was not viable and Bettaplace went bust trying in Israel which was a suitably geographically constrained operational area, then I fear for Nio and I feel they are flogging a dead horse. Time will tell.

    Europe and Germany in particular have been to slow to transition to wind and solar energy and all electric vehicles. Wind and solar energy do not need to be imported and can be produced locally in any country. Europe needs to provide incentives for homes and businesses to install electric heat pumps and get rid of old polluting gas and oil boilers. The move to electric vehicles will also be sped up. There is no good reason to help fund Putin's war by buying oil, gas and coal from Russia.

  • @Brian-om2hh

    @Brian-om2hh

    2 жыл бұрын

    Home charging on a specific EV tariff would see your per mile costs drop to around 2.5p per mile. Your Mazda at 70mpg, probably equates to something like 13p to15p per mile. Although that's a rough-ish guess...... Plus with electric, you don't have to *drive* to a filling station.... Servicing is heaps cheaper too.. Chances are you'll use more costly public charging no more than around 6 times a year. You'll charge at home 95% of the time....like most EV owners do. And if you have a Sainsburys or Tesco near you, it may be possible to grab a free top up charge there too.

  • @Jamesandkate

    @Jamesandkate

    As mentioned you need an EV tariff. Charging out an about is very sporadic so I don’t think about the cost tbh. For me it’s not about money, it’s about emissions. We really need to do as much as we can to lower what we burn.

    I'm just a random guy and obviously I can speak for Gridserve/Enfield in particular, but generally the etiquette is that there would be absolutely no expectation for you to move. In fact with multi-stall charging sites in general, usually the capacity of the site is built with the expectation that not all ultra-rapid chargers will be using anywhere near their maximum capacity at any one time, so what you're doing would be generally within the standard usage of the site. The only thing I would suggest is that it would be preferable for a CCS car to take a CCS only charger, instead of a CCS/Chademo charger, so that it avoids the likelihood of a Chademo car turning up and none of the few Chademo stalls being unavailable.

    Absolutely not. The only problem I foresee is if you were sat at 96% drawing very little and there was a queue. If someone’s waiting I’m outta there as soon as I can be.

    As that appears to be a service area for EV alone I can't see the sustainabilty of the services provided being profitable, I can't see it being that full from what I have seen of other places . I regularly used to deliver next to a Teslar charge area in London that never seemed to have more than 2 cars charging at any one time.

Once the installation of more charging stations come along, each service area will have fewer customers, and the amount of customers at one time having a cup of coffee won't support a food restaurant.

    @@davidsworld5837 whilst I agree it would be great to have a Gridserve hud in Gateshead with ultra rapid chargers, but to be fair there are a number of 50kw rapid chargers options nearby: 2x instavolt at McDonald's, 1x CYC at the stadium, 1x Podpoint at Tesco, 2x Osprey at Team Valley next to a costa, and 2x FastNeds at The Angel (great photo location). So whilst there is not a 'hub' there are plenty of options for rapid charging in Gateshead, if you look on zap map.

    Hi James, thanks for an excellent video showing the impressive new facilities :) But as a disabled EV users I’m once again very disappointed by the missed opportunity to create a facility that really is fully accessible for everyone. I know that there are at least three dedicated disabled charging bays… but the layout is fundamentally flawed I believe. Just having a wide blue bay doesn’t make it fully accessible. 1 - the placement of the charge unit blocks access to the boot of a rear charging EV. Many wheelchair users store their wheelchair in the boot so they will be trapped in their vehicle once they have stopped to charge. 2 - I believe the layout should be angled at about 30 degrees with the charge unit sited in the natural void triangle space, this would not obstruct the front or rear of the EV. 3 - the cable management of these units is very poor; which can cause issues for some disabled users. 4 - the interaction with these charge units is also very poor as it often requires the user to be able to stand to read the screen clearly. I’ve been saying this to the infrastructure providers for years now; but frustratingly none seem to take the issues on board. I’m hoping things improve as their will be a lot of disabled EV users in the future; many of which will never have access to charging at home as many are without off street parking :)

    Hi Ian. So, I believe the bay is so wide so rear charging cars can park either side to allow boot access. The cables are also very long. There’s no kerbs either, it’s completely flat and the screen height is relatively low, although I’m not sure if it works well for wheelchair users. They seemed very pleased with it.

Speaking purely personally, all I'd want from a charger is a charge. I don't anticipate going the Tesla route anytime soon if I'm honest. I went with an eNiro 2 years ago, and I've no regrets.
