Making the Top
-Check out my website. I would be happy to make an unfinished guitar, bass, or any string instrument for you. The standard method to support what I do here, both as Ideas and projects that you will see on the channel. Do you have an idea that you think would look awesome in one of these videos? Let's make it! If you need a router template set to make your design, I make those too!

    Thank you! I know I may upset the status quo from time to time. I don't always approach problems from a traditional origin. I think Luthiery is all about solving problems in different ways. Every maker has a different sets of problems with different jigs and fixtures to solve them. It takes this kind of thinking to work out the complex geometric challenges. I hope you will continue to watch and contribute.

    That topic you will see in the next video, I plan to make the bracing the same way the Gretsch falcons do if you are familiar with their unique bracing structure.

    @@TwoCherriesIns trestle bracing! Right? Whats the functionality behind that? Does it produce a tonal feedback in response?

  • @TwoCherriesIns

    @TwoCherriesIns

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Addictiveminds Simply put, it ties the top and the back together in a way that helps to reduce feedback but retains the hollow-body sound. Instead of using a sold block like the ES335, it uses braces that engage the back and the top. Sure the tone is affected, but it's just a way to reduce feedback for louder stage environments.

    Hi!! Trying to do the same with a 330 build! Did you use urea glue for the lams or PVA? Also, what thickness are the laminates and are they cross grained? Thanks a mil!!!

    I'm just using Tightbond original for this one. I wanted a top that is just over .125" depth and I uses a three layer laminate so around 0.04".

    Really nice work! I wonder what the tone difference would be between this kind of top and a single piece of the same wood pressed into an arch. Any thoughts? Would it have to be thicker? Braced differently? Sound different or louder?

  • @TwoCherriesIns

    @TwoCherriesIns

    There are so many variables in this equation, the outcomes are infinite. We can make some broad sweeping claims about the tone. Certainly, for acoustic value, a well constructed and tuned spruce top would make the string harmonics much more pronounced. This is an electric instrument so it doesn't factor in the same way. This topic has been argued back and forth forever and it will continue to be. I just try things and see what happens, I'm sure this guitar will sound great.

    @@TwoCherriesIns Yes, I'm interested in acoustic archtops. I know most are made by carving, but I wonder how it would sound if one started with a thickness-planed piece of Sitka Spruce and then bent it into an arch. I think it's been done, but I don't know specifically what makes/models. You did essentially this with your Selmer-type guitar, but of course that's only a slight arch. Quite loud though, I think, right?

    What wood is used for laminating? I’ve looked everywhere for bare wood veneer without paper backing but I can’t find it.

  • @TwoCherriesIns

    @TwoCherriesIns

    This is maple, I cut and thickness sanded these veneers myself. Veneer in the specific dimensions need to make these guitars are not available. You can uses a figured wood veneer for the outside lamination but to get the correct thickness you will need to thickness sand your own veneers.
