I've just returned this evening from auditioning the 2622 model at a "big box" music store. Plugged it into a Fender Hot Rod Jr, a Fender Champion 100, and a Bugera V22. I like markings on volume and tone dials, but it's a minor issue. I've no idea who's producing those pickups, but ladies and gentlemen, Gretsch has hit a massive home run with them, particularly if you like to venture off into jazz, blues and funk. If you like being pleasantly surprised, this may scratch that itch.

I’ve been considering this model lately as I’d love at least one semi-solid guitar in my quiver. And I like that these sound so good and are so lightweight. I’m not too keen on the upper fret access but I’ve got an SG for that 😊

I’m a lefty and saw a 2622 up close today, no bigsby but I’m not fussed about that. Looks and feels gorgeous, so close to pulling the trigger on it as it’s a great guitar that doesn’t break the bank. It was the Torino green finish.

I just got a 5120 and I have to say I've been very pleased and I've never really been a Gretsch guy to begin with. The neck is smooth and easy to play, the pick ups sound great, it's not as heavy as it looks, and it holds it tune pretty well.

well done, with no showing off. I'm going to try to learn some of those guitar licks. I just bought the g2622 without the Bigsby. love it. i tried one out in GC and played for about an hour on a clean channel. Went back to make sure about my choice and played for 15 minutes on a dirty channel and was sold. i was impressed with the sustain on the 2622. ordered it and received it about 1 month ago. i haven't picked up the strat nor tele since then. the overdriven sound is so damn cool.

Have read one review which suggests it needs a complete set up and another which says it plays straight out the box! Am torn between this guitar and the g2622t so your advice will certainly help. I bought a 2655 in single barrel stain(brown woodgrain) about a week ago. It is not just light, it is INCREDIBLY light! Even after I swapped the knobs for the solid metal Gretsch arrow knobs, it's still under 6 pounds!? It is a joy to pick up and play. The sound is incredible. It has humbuckers, but still manages to NOT sound like a Les Paul. The inlays are very well done with no filled gaps from bad woodworking. The neck is the perfect profile, fret ends are acceptable for the price. I wanted to put a B7 on it, but alas even though it looks like it would fit, the space between the tailpiece and back end of the body is about a 1/4" too far. A B5 would work with a vibramate, and the guitar would still be fairly light. My only complaint about it so far? The master volume! If you run it at ANYthing below full blast, the tone control acts as like a volume control also. Try it... Put the individual volumes and tone control all the way up, strum a chord. Great, right? Now drop the master to about 2/3rds, play a chord, lower the tone, and then play again. The volume drops considerably. Honestly though, I will just use the master as a kill switch to keep the amp quiet while taking a break. It seems to drop off quickly anyway, so I will just leave it cranked and use the individual controls. I tried another one at the guitar store yesterday, and it did the exact same thing. Just a quirk of Gretsch wiring I guess.

  • @miguellott9038

    @miguellott9038

Not scratchy yet at 3 months, and I never touch the master now unless I am putting it on the stand for a while. I honestly don't know how they made such a badass guitar for this price. If it was an Epiphone it would be $200 more. I went to the dealer and every single one of them did it, even the ones that cost a lot more, so whatever. A non issue as long as you never touch it.

How is the balance on a strap? I'm a little wary of guitars with the strap button on the back of the neck instead of the upper wing. I've found Gibson SG's annoying to play because of that.

  • @Bikedueder

@@aniquinstark4347 At just over 5 pounds, it hardly matters a whole lot. I never use a strap, so I am not much help anyway. Get an acoustic style strap, and tie it onto the headstock instead.

Can someone please explain the 3 volume knobs to me? I have played a couple grestch guitars and watched a tone of videos and I don't get the point. I have 2 les paul inspired guitars that have the 2 volume and 2 tone. I like to set the bridge pickup on 10 and the neck pickup on about 5 and you can go from a clean tone to an overdrive tone at the flip of the switch. With the grestch wouldn't the master volume override that?

Fantastic playing! I own a G24t hollow body and a G53t Jet, I am looking at the G26 range to complete my collection. Is it only me or is the G2655 brighter than the G2622? The only down side to being a Gretsch lover is their tuning stability issues. Has anyone had tuning stability issues as well as me? The Jet is the worst of the pair that I own and I am going to replace the machine heads in the New Year with a set of original Grovers or Gotch tuners on both my guitars.

Well here is a fairly fair comparison of 3 guitars with the SAME pick ups and different body build specs. All played by the same person on the same amp. WAS there a difference? YES! Not a big 1, no but there was. So at least some if not materials, (Tone wood (mass)debate) at least the build TYPE does effect electric tone. A hollow body does NOT sound the same a solid of similar size or materials, with the same electrics! The big body Gretsch was warmer and fuller sounding, the 2 semi thin lines were brighter and more focussed in attack etc, but the basic sound print was almost identical given the same pick ups in all 3 axes. And YES all 3 of these guitars are beautiful! Sound great. I wouldn't kick either 3 out of bed! ;oP

Amazing tone range with these, considering the pickups are close to identical. The solid block models get better driven rock tones, each with their subtleties, and the G2420T achieves close to warm jazz tones while excelling with pushed rockabilly. I just got a 2420T on a whim, just for the Bigsby (licensed) and it's on its way. I hope mine Sounds as nice. Inexpensive guitars sometime vary in quality. Thanks for the very well done comparison.

awesome comparison. Tried these three myself yesterday and the build quality, compared to the Epiphone Dots, is way better. also the PU sound is so much more individual and clear. The sound has a special character. The Ibanez AS53/AS73 aren't bad either, but the sound on the Neck is just muddy and the attack is missing on these. I'm going to buy the G2622T next month. She will get used on stage, so I need the center block. Actually the G2420 sounded a bit fuller but I'm afraid about feedback when it comes to some "gainyer" tunes ^^

Andrew West. The quality and versatility of the Gretsch is way ahead of the Ibanez guitars. Intonation works great, even with the bigsby. But you must try some strings to find the perfect ones for the guitar. Elixirs and other coated strings are too soft for these guitars. I'm currently using 11-52 Ernie Balls. These match the sound of the guitar pretty good. Nevertheless I recommend to use a valve amp. These guitars are just made to be paired with valves ^^ My recommendation is a Peavey Classic 30.

Its funny the G2622 style -thin wide body maple even with same pickups always has more punch and definition than the scaled down G2655 or the Jumbo G2420T. The Gibsons are the same way ES335 has a better sound than the ES339 though with effects you can get the same results I'm sure, for the money these guitars even though owned by Fender corp. still are there own entity, imo.

I bought my first Gretsch, a 2655T, when they first came out in 2016. I was impressed at first but then it started having issues with staying in tune. I couldn't even look at the Bigsby without throwing it out of tune. WAY out of tune. I had it re-strung, and had the nut and bridge smoothed and lubricated, no help. I ended up trading it back to the dealer for a less expensive yet much higher quality 5435, with no Bigsby. It had the signature "Great Gretsch Sound" from the first note I played on it, something that I chased on the 2655T but never found. And it stays in tune.

Bigsby's are a challenge to get working correctly sometimes, and need to be tweaked, upgraded rollers, roller bridge. The import Bigsby's most of the time need to have the string roller pulled out and the nylon bushings sanded down to stop them from binding. The hardest part is getting the snap ring off.

I was gifted with the G2622T for Christmas and it’s my first Gretsch. I’m sorry that it’s been so long that it took me to discover Gretsch. It took me 38 years to discover that it’s my voice as a guitarist. I reckon I never tried one out as I was never a hollow body or semi-hollow body enthusiast and because they were so dang expensive...so with this guitar at the price point it’s offered at...well it went on my list and I was given one. It’s a really well built guitar. It has a great feel and acoustic tone. The Broad-Tron pickups are a little too “std. issue humbuckerey” for me. I almost always change out the stock pickups in my guitars, so there’s no surprise there. That’s just me. Nothing bad about the guitar. What one hears on the video is accurate as to what the guitar actually sounds like. For $500-ish, it’s a good deal.

Same. I just got my first Gretsch 3 months ago. An orange double cut, 5622T. The one with the f-holes, not the cat eyes. I'm 37, been playing since I was 12. I LOVE it! It even inspires me to play more, and learn more. I get a rush playing it. And it sounds fantastic, especially in middle position.

They sound far better than their price would imply. Perhaps Gretsch are investing profits from the expensive models back into these to get more people into them?

Agreed, excellent sounding guitars, and they seem to have easy playability (at least in his hands). The one criticism I'll make is they don't really have the trademark Gretsch tone. That's okay, I suppose, since they have so many in their line to cover that, so these are different flavors for Gretsch.

Do these sound like traditional Gretsch guitars? No. But, they sound more like vintage Gibson than Gibson's new recreations do. Maybe I'm just hearing things on here differently than in person. I ordered the fully hollow one so, I'll find out soon.

Lalairu I absolutely love it! I take it with me when traveling because it has some acoustic qualities. The sound is a very familiar humbucker sound. The Humbuckers are made by the same company that makes PRS SE pickups G&B. I bought a TV Jones but, haven’t put it in yet. I don’t regret buying it one bit.

I own a g2655t. It plays great ,but the electronics suck. At least on the one I have. I bought it for $300 so I didn't expect a whole lot. I bought for how it played. I think I'm going to try an electromatic.

jgmedina it's all personal preference. The 2420T is larger and has little to no difference in sound quality compared to the 2622, but might I add that the models without the trem seem to have slightly more kick and sustain.
