Gretsch G2622 Streamliner Walnut Stain - Affordable Electric Semi-Acoustic Guitar Review

Ойын-сауық

This weeks review of the country gentleman inspired Gretsch G2622 Streamliner started out with a plan to play some Beatles medleys but the guitar had better ideas and took us on a detour down a 1980's mission inspired gothic rock rabbit hole. No worries... we found our happy place!!

I played a whole lot of these guitars and the more expensive electromatics. And ended up with one of the cheapest models. The guitar with the p90s. It sounded amazing and still does. The sound of our band is build around that guitar.

Their p90s and staple p90s are amazing in these new Indonesian Gretsch guitars. The BT25 humbucker on mine, not so much. Best 300 bucks I’ve spent on guitars.

I just tried the one with the P-90s as well. Really spoke to me. Great voice unplugged. Stuff I hadn't played in a couple years came right out. Only draw back was the fret work. A couple of them up around 12-15 were poking out on the edge. The P-90 is the way to go tho.

Great review! My first Gretsch (a few years ago) was this same guitar and I still love it. I like it so much that I bought a G2622T-P90 and that one is really special. Overall as good as this review with the fantastic P-90 pickups and the Bigsby! And if you want to mod it, don't forget that Epiphone and this Greatch have import (or metric) hardware that is not the same as Gibson (US spec). And be warned, they are so good that once you buy a Gretsch you want more, I'm up to 4!

Another excellent review! You really dig into the guitars and provide one of the most comprehensive reviews I’ve found. Thank you! I just started playing guitar this year. I started on an acoustic, and received massive amounts of peer pressure from a friend to get a guitar. I was looking at an Epiphone Les Paul, that is until I picked up a Gretsch Electromatic G5230T. I love that guitar, but the more I play, and the more I watch reviews, I’m seriously considering adding a Gretsch hollow body or center block to my collection. I love the sound. Thank you again. Keep up the awesome reviews!

Thanks for this in-depth review and honest opinions. I was considering getting my first hollow-body and your great run-down of these great models convinced me to give it a try. And WOW! i own a Gibson SG and Epiphone LP, both worth more than this Streamliner but WOW! Gretsch is putting some form of secret sauce in these things because it is better in every way than my (double the price) SG. Better balance, lower action (from the factory!) with no fret buzz, better feeling fretboard, better neck, better tone from pickups, and stays in tune better! My SG isn't terrible but the G does tend to try to slip more than the other strings. Not so with this baby. I can't recommend this guitar enough, it's a real sleeper. I even tried a friend's Silver Sky for comparison and though it felt slightly better, this streamliner was VERY close for my tastes. Gretsch really deserves more love I believe. Great video and thanks a ton for turning me onto Gretsch Streamliner!

I bought one of these (a left-handed one with the 'single barrel stain' finish) about 6 months ago. This review is spot on. The guitar has had all the money spent where it counts in terms of design and construction and, whilst time and money has obviously been saved in a few places, it's all very cleverly hidden away. You won't find a single defect in the finish, even the f-hole edges (often rough on cheaper semis) are top notch. As one of 2 'main guitars', it's been pretty heavily used.. played it just about every day since I got it and it's still asking to be picked up. Playing it is never a chore. Sound wise, it's not a guitar you can just plug into anything and play anything and it will sound amazing, but played a certain way and with certain settings it's punches way above it's weight. Lot's of ring and sustain in open positions when plugged in, great with drive (as the reviewer mentioned) - not so good with intonation and playing up the neck with an ever so slight tendency to choke on bends (in my hands anyway). This is a shame because, with the right gear/amp sims, it's surprising good at smooth, compressed LP style lead tones on the neck pickup too (think Sweet Child o' Mine). The laurel fingerboard looks great but feels a little 'dry' - again occasionally working against you for string bending. All in all, I'd say it works great as a second guitar, but maybe not as a primary workhorse unless you've got quite a narrow range of tones you want to achieve.

Another awesome video Colin. Thanks. I’ve bought 3 Gretsch this year. The build quality, fit and finish has been excellent. Each circa $1,000 Australian. But vastly superior to a $5500 Gibson LP I looked at recently. I’ve also bought a good number of epiphones the past 6 months which I am really enjoying and the quality fit and finish is significantly better to those as well. I also feel the electronics need an upgrade though, but does numb the experience a little. Not as dynamic as the Epiphones. I felt the pickups were also a bit dull. But they’re all pretty colours with gold hardware and Bigsbys!😂

Country Stoner... Had bought a gretch jr. few months ago and it had unbelievable feel, it was so lightweight to pick up sounded fantastic. What two things prompted me to take it back was the bigsby and the instability of tuning, (maybe I could have worked hard and created more stable unit by spending money and time). And also the knobs, one volume pot cut out entirely and the guitar would stop producing any sound abruptly, and also the sweep on the controls was zero it was on or off. But I still really love that guitar and would like to get a hard ail version It felt wonderful, and sounded great, and the fit and finish was perfect. Now that I'm writing this I probably should have kept it! Great video, thanks!

Colin, at the Gretsch website they show a pic of the centerblock. It does start out as a plank like the other brands but Gretsch chambers it and cuts much of it away to trim weight. It is still a full-size centerblock but much of the middle has been cut away.

L as usual thanks for your videos I enjoy them dearly. I really enjoy your playing and you're yeah just you're playing when you do you know your thing at the end and stuff and when you have the you know rhythm and then you do the lead software. You know it's so refreshing to listen to a player who is not just shredding it or going so fast that each note has no time to be played dynamically. You really really I I really enjoy your playing I'm saying that over and over but I do it's tasteful it's musical of course it's just really cool. Sometimes when you play stuff it evokes feelings out of another band and sometimes I can't place it. So you know try and figure out who some of you are influences more. But yeah always look forward to your videos. And I will say that most of the time I don't listen to much sound samples of playing because I just find it boring and I know I'm not going to get a true representation of what is being heard in the room. With you I don't care if I'm getting the true representation I just enjoy listening to it. But I'm wondering if you got your model number wrong. Because if I'm not mistaken all the guitars ending with two two or hollow bodies. I own two gretches myself I own an electromatic jet an old one 5435 love that guitar I probably literally one of my best playing guitars or easiest to play out of all my guitars and I have a guitar that are a hell of a lot more expensive. And number two is my 5422 and my second stretch is a 5422t which is a hollow body and I'm pretty sure the Japanese built ones are the player pro series are also a hollow bodies with and have the ending of tutu so might be a 6122 or something like that but again that's under the impression that all the guitars they make streamlined electromatic and their other series only the only the custom shops are made in America and they're like eight grand and up I think. But yeah so I have a feeling that that this isn't the right model number for if it's a hollow if it's a center block it's all. I can't see it because I'm blind so that makes a difference it's funny my my electromatic has the orange thing which is done flawlessly and my jet has a special limited color which is called blue onyx it's dark blue with a Metallica metal flake in it. Didn't know what that metal flaking it until someone told me when I asked them what the Catholic like LOL anyway thanks again back to your video sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist he has some thinking of getting a newer electromatic jet and also the the electromatic version of what you are showcasing today as a center block electromatic well that's for the future. My next purchase I think is going to be the monoprice 50 watt 2 channel all tube amp head and then I think I'm going to buy the Harley Benton vertical 2x12 with the vintage 30 center. I do also own the model price stage right 15 watt all two guitar amp that also that has a output a speaker output so I can run that through the cabinet when I get it the 15 w I know it's available in Europe on the Harley Benton brand and it's called the two 15 I don't know if they they're doing the 51 amp yet again sincerely was, Bob the blind bedroom guitars

Hey Bob, great to hear from you. I hope you get this reply as I want you to know how much I appreciate your comments and the kind words and support, it really is massively appreciated. So now on to your Gretsch model number question, actually I think I have the answer and that is the first number of the model 2622 which in this instance is a 2 denotes the Streamliner budget range, whereas the first number being a 5 denotes the Electromatic range which is a higher price point. So while your 5422 closely resembles mine visually it is a more expensive version. I think that makes sense, I have previously gone on record as saying that absolutely nobody understands Gretsch model numbering system... so I guess that is the alternative and shorter answer! Cheers again man and thanks again!

I got here early for once. Thank you for another fantastic video! I'll never understand why these manufacturers cheap out on potentiometers. With he volumes they must be working in they could surely get decent deals. I'd rather spend an extra $25 to have CTS pots that work and don't need replacing than having to mod it myself; especially in a semi-hollow or hollowbody. Fantastic playing and excellent review as always!

I DO get your point on that. However; YOU might be willing to pay an extra $25 for upgraded aftermarket pots and wiring, BUT they’re going to charge an extra $100 or even more for the same ones you’d pay $25 for if they come already installed. You can bet on that. They have profit margins they have to reach. I’d rather them keep the overall costs down and let us do what mods we prefer or can afford on them myself. I have a G2627T (the 3 humbuckers model). I kept the pickups because I liked them even though they’re not necessarily ‘that great Gretsch sound’ you get with filtertrons, upgraded the wiring harness, added a Tusq nut, roller bridge, better spring for the Bigsby, Kluson locking tuners and upgraded the knobs to the nickel ‘G’ knobs, added upgrade switch tips and now for just under $700 USD, I have an absolutely killer looking, professional grade, giggable instrument that’s every bit as nice playing/looking as my Gibson ES 339 that cost almost $1500 more and I’m not afraid to leave the house with it. Just my 2 cents. Your mileage may vary and all that, yada, yada, yada.

I have one but it has a P90 pickup for the neck pickup....and wow, the range of tones! I can use the bridge for clear, jazzy sounds (though, they aren't the perfect jazz tone) or I can get a nice, chunky rock tone using both pickups...or just use the P90 and it like.....well, it's like when you drive a car that is a honest sports car and has a racing mode: you hit that mode button, thinking nothing will really change...and it's like the car WANTS to be a race car! If you run just the P90 and crank the gain, it's almost magical...it wants to be a metal/punk/guitar! The natural feedback is awesome, the sound can still be crisp if you want...you will be doing pinch harmonics on accident, at first...then you're throwing them in wherever because you can now! It's a blast of a guitar!

I have a 1997 Epi SG with the exact same bridge with B-2 stamped into it. " a bit rough around the edges" puts me in mind of my first wife....she used to say that to me alll the time and help me straighten them out with a number of hous hold items...I think with many types of factory/production line items that arrive in the shops these days...there is a lack of finishing off rough edges and general casting and cutting burrs seem aplenty....regardless of the country of manufacture...but what a cool and great sounding instrument...great review...mod it \m/

I'd never considered Gretsch because I didn't know they did budget instruments, although I have some top level Gibsons I didn't want to spend that much. Could not agree with you more 😎👍 Gretsch has the best bang for the money without losing tone or playability in my opinion. Have found that while in the middle position on the pup selector, with volume and tone set to taste...if you turn the neck volume down just a touch, the tone changes for a killer rock tone😉😎👍 Tru-Arc make some cool bridges for my G5410T hollow-body, pinned floating bridge, that may find it's way to me...however that's all I would consider to hear any difference. It definitely doesn't need it, but looks cool😉 Gold hardware would look cool as well on it as well...but again doesn't need it.😎👍 On this guitar, that by the way am glad you're keeping, the "V" stop bar is cool looking. I have had one of these for a little while, almost a year now maybe? My main complaint, and it's pretty much the only one. The way the wiring is done, if you drop the master volume AT ALL, the tone control becomes a volume, and it will take the output to zero by the time you get 2/3rds down on the adjustment. Maybe just a quirk of Gretsch wiring maybe, but still somewhat annoying. I got a G2217 Junior Jet in dark cherry a few days ago, and it made me dig this one out again. The Junior jet is a flat top with two Broadtrons, a single volume and tone, and a wraparound bridge. I have been tempted to put an amp jewel in the master volume hole, drill out another hole back near the other three, and make it standard four knob "Les Paul" style wiring. Overall, awesome guitar for the price range, and light as a feather.

Beautiful guitar, the cheaper gretsches are astounding though as you say pickup upgrade transforms them , my friend stuck gretsch filtertrons in a streamliner and it was great, I have 2 old gretsches an anniversary and an astrojet both from 1964, they have character but modern one are more consistent in quality for example anniversary has wonky nameplate and astrojet has wonky 12th fret side dots but I suppose they are made by hand

You made the right choice. Great guitar at a great price. I however, would have tried my best to haggle it down to the 299 range. Still a great deal and nice work!

Hi Colin, great vid as usual, just to say they made streamliners in the 60s the same shape as this, there,s one for sale in Sheffield on ebay in red @ just over 3000. So they have proper history and not just a new idea as most think. Isnt guitar history great! cheers Steve

@@theguitaristas Yep they first appeared in 1955-58 as single pickup versions and then again in the sixties to early seventies based on Chet Atkins model but a cheaper option, they had a metal plate on the stock with streamliner model on it hope this helps. Cheers Steve

I've looked at Gretsch Streamliners many times over the last few years. I was going to buy a G2420 Streamliner, but the night before I was going to buy one I found the G5126 Electromatic and bought that instead. Then I was looking at getting a Gretsch Streamliner P90, but I'm waiting to sell my Tokai Les Paul before I buy another guitars, but when I do it looks like probably being a Gretsch Streamliner. I also wouldn't mind looking at buying a pair of Broad Tron humbuckers on eBay or something. I can imagine that lots of Streamliner buyers 'upgrade' the pickups, whereas I find them to sound nice and bright and with an output not too disimilar to a PAF 👍

I don't think there's anything wrong with these pickups, in fact I hope I proved they sound pretty good, but I fancy swapping them for some humbucker sized P90 Phat Cats... so if you fancy them we could swap my BT2's for your Tokai? ;)

@@theguitaristas Hahaha well maybe if the guitar was still attached to the pickups it might be a good deal 😉 Funny enough, the Tokai has a set of Tonerider Rebel 90s, which are the same kind of humbucker sized P90 👍
