Greta Kline Interview For FORGE. Issue 9

Greta Kline and the massive amount of work she’s produced in the few years that she has been active, have so critically impacted my approach to making art and presenting it to the world, that it’s sort of hard to even pinpoint what it was like before accidentally stumble upon her music just over a year ago. I’m pretty certain that this is true for a lot people who’ve come in contact with the music by the young woman behind Frankie Cosmos. Greta’s music is an odd juxtaposition of being public about what feels private and very much reflects a world where a teenage girl can release a 40+ album discography of demos, available to anyone who’s willing to give them a listen. Since the release of her first studio album Zentropy, put out by the tour de force indie label Double Double Whammy in March of 2014, Frankie Cosmos has garnered critical acclaim and a cult status online and offline. Despite only having one “properly recorded” studio album out, and another one soon to be released with Bayonet Records, Greta’s achingly sincere songwriting and endearing presence have really helped fill a void in contemporary indie music where their hasn’t been so much genuineness in the past couple of decades.
She and her romantic/musical partner Aaron Maine (of Porches.) have created a whole mythos of characters, motifs, and symbols that only add the already mystifying creative output they have done collectively and alone. I met Greta for the first time the day that I moved to New York City at a show she played at the MoMA, which I designed a poster for. After meeting Greta she introduced me to the DIY scene in New York that her brother introduced her to as a young person, and since then I owe a lot of the friendships I’ve made and experiences I’ve had living here to her and her music. Just over a year after seeing Frankie Cosmos perform for the first time, I met up with Greta in Prospect Park to conduct this interview. At this point, after all that has happened, all I can really say is that there is an immense power behind Greta’s music, and it has only just begun to crystallize within the collective consciousness that surrounds it.

thank you so much, this is first in depth interview i've seen from greta, it's great to finally get to learn more about the girl and the whole history of frankie cosmos. also it made me discover porches, i knew she had a boyfriend but i didn't know he was in a cool similar sounding band! just downloaded all of porches shit from bandcamp and gonna listen to it all a bit later on. i admire her productivity so much, really inspires me to just get all my shit together and just create as many films as possible. again, a massive thank you to forge, probably the best 'interviewing cool artists/musicians' platform i've come across on youtube and believe me i've come across a lot so i know what i'm talking about. makes me really want to interview the rad bands and musicians in my local town.

Why is there so much hate directed to her? I get that she may not have the pin-up looks of her mother, but she is still very pretty in a different way.

THANK YOU! Greta, for referring to it as New York City AND even stating Manhattan. As a New Yorker, I get very tired of folks from NYC saying they're from "New York" when they strictly mean one of the boroughs. It's a huge, sprawling state, very annoying when people in NYC think they're the only NY'ers.

I love Frankie Cosmos and I think Greta is an amazingly talented person. I met her when she was 4 but she obviously won’t remember. It’s a funny anecdote of life that I like to share. I was walking a small dog on the upper East side of NYC and I had to bring the dog back by 8am. Except I didn’t have a watch and probably not even a cell phone, or it had run out of battery. So the first person I saw on maybe E 86 street and who I could have asked the time to, was a gentleman who was checking if his little daughter was all right for school before parting way. I approached him and asked the time. Both he and his daughter turned around to me and he almost in a shy way replied he didn’t know it. The little girl smiled at me with the same exact vibrant class shown in this video interview. They were Greta and Kevin Kline. October 1998.

Warping Warping this is actually a style of music if you know that history of indie and similar style bands. I want to credit arto with coining the term but he called it the rushem approach where you give the listener a quick blast of music that's good and leave the ears wanting more as apposed to a long jam sesh. kind of how punk took that on and is really quick fast and then on to the next.

I think she has potential but saying “like” in everything she says in her speaking was a bit annoying 🤦🏻‍♀️. She would do well if she limited saying the word “like”. Not hating on her, trying to get to know her but cringed every time she says “like”.
