What a wondrous smile she had! I found myself smiling watching her smile. She radiated beauty!

Amazing what she can convey in a split second. Her face could change into 100 emotions in a couple minutes,

Goddess! No-one has charisma like Garbo had.

Enchanting animation is Greta with her hair and face oppose to a photograph. The music I agree is a great touch too.

After her last film, "Two-Faced Woman" in 1941, Garbo was offered many ideas for a possible comeback. Of all the offerings, only one film came close to production. In late 1948, Garbo signed a one-movie deal with producer Walter Wanger, for a film version of H. Balzac's famous novel, "La Duchess de Langelais". Wanger wanted to shoot in Italy and James Mason agreed to co-star. Sadly, after many problems, postponements, and finally losing all financiers, the film was dropped. Wanger hoped to start again but in February 1950, Garbo lost interest and returned to New York.

yes this is from 49 the test was shot in California but the film was to be made in Italy, when she got there the italian press expected a new Garbo and hounded her, she became restless about thee whole situation and the producers, one being walter wanger, backed out and that is the end of the story....even in home film footage I have seen on her she always appears happy and very playful

When I think about it and see what an icon Garbo has become I am beginning to wonder why the imitatators in showbiz have left Garbo alone????

As per historians, in this year, her Hollywood reign was over. Years prior, no one would dare do a screen test of her. This was of her own choosing to see if she thought she still had "it" - she did, however, she felt otherwise and chose to retire, never to look back with regret

It wasn't a case of Garbo not liking the way she looked in these tests. The film's backers could not raise the money and the project was cancelled. She was hurt, taking it personally, and left Holywood, moving permanently to NewYork City. She was 43 years of age when these tests were made.

I wonder why her old studio MGM, with whom she made all of American films did not step in and help finance this film. After all, her old boss, Louis B. Mayer was still head of MGM when this screen test was made.

@wisdaniel; what it specifically was, was a lighting test to see how Garbo would appear. You must understand this situation; Garbo ha not made a film since Two Faced Woman, and in the subsequent decade, films as well as the leone who made them had changed. Something most people not in the business don't know is that (al)most every woman who is at the 'top,' (a current analogy is Angelina Jolie) are NOT thought of as such by the 'industry' after the age of 40. Regardless of what anyone thinks, that's how it went - and STILL does. An example of a woman knowing this and (financially) 'preparing herself for this, is Sharon Stone, who, even though she 'peaked' (her star power was at its highest), with Fatal Attraction, she then made a slew of terrible pictures (Sliver, anyone?) - JUST for the paycheck. The financing for Themis Garbo picture was from a bunch of investors, and while you or I can look back with hindsight and say 'big deal,' in the immediate time-frame this happened, there were MANY people (David O. Selznick, etc.) who were going to 'bet their career' on this project. The weight of it all became too much, and, sadly - the project collapsed.

It was Basic Instinct (1992) with Sharon Stone not Fatal Attraction.That was with Glenn Close but same male costar Michael Douglas.

What a range of expressions, although many are quite somber. I think that women who play with their hair that much are a bit insecure. She was a tremendous actress.

It was a screen test. She was performing for the camera. Playing with her hair was part of that.

The problem is actresses were taking on grittier roles, that showed them aging. Bette Davis in "All About Eve," and Gloria Swanson in "Sunset Boulevard." Greta Garbo wanted to return to movies, like the ones she was making in the 1930's. The movie she did the screen test for, was never made, and she turned down all other roles. So she never returned back to films. Too bad, because she had the beauty and talent to do so.

Hello, does anyone know if this is the famous screen test Garbo made to make a comeback, but then decided not to because she didn't like the way she looked on screen at this age? IMDB has her last movie listed in 1941, this screen test says 1949. Anyone know the story behind this??
