Many years after shooting "Queen Christina", director Rouben Mamoulian was asked what he told Garbo to think about while this famous long closeup was being shot. He smiled and replied, "Nothing. Absolutely nothing." I have my very own Queen Christina story. Many years ago, when I was 22 years old, I spent a summer in Sweden, as the guest of a Swedish businessman who worked with my father. He had a very intelligent and attractive daughter named Inga, with whom I struck up a friendship. One weekend, her parents planned an outing for the four of us to Drottningholm Palace outside of Stockholm. Queen Christina (who in real life was short, humpbacked, and pockmarked. Her singularity lay in her extraordinary intellect, not in beauty) had begun construction on the palace in the 17th century. As the ferry taking us out to Drottningholm approached the palace, Inga turned to me and asked, in her charmingly accented English: "Haff you ever seen de film about Kveen Christina vith Greta Garbo?" I replied, "Yes; but from everything I've ever read, the real Queen Christina was nowhere near as beautiful as Greta Garbo." Inga shook her head sadly. "Dat's kvite true. Da real Kveen Christina looked like Marty Feldman."
