GRENFELL TOWER FIREFIGHTER | THE DEBRIEF | Former Firefighter Ricky Nuttall

Ойын-сауық

In this episode of The Debrief, former 22 SAS Trooper Big Phil Campion speaks to Ricky Nuttall.
Enduring a scattered & abusive childhood at the hands of his step-father, Ricky was torn between joining the Royal Marines or the fire service, choosing the latter due to a poor fitness test performance at Lympstone. In 2017, Ricky, his watch, and 19 other crews, were called to the Grenfell Tower fire. Entering the burning high-rise multiple times that evening, Ricky went over & above his call of duty to aid the rescue of the residents of the towerblock. Now sharing his story of recovery from substance abuse, PTSD & depression, and his time on Channel 4's SAS Who Dares, Ricky is working alongside multiple organisations to improve mental health support for emergency service personnel, and helping to reform prisoners through sport.

The LFB minimum starting pressure for a Standard Duration Breathing Apparatus is 240 bar and the Low Pressure Warning Whistle (LPWW) is set to 84 bar which will give the firefighter approx 12 mins to get to safety (at normal breathing rate - never mind under exertion). 41x Firefighters operated beyond the LPWW at Grenfell... Forty-One! One Firefighter got as low as 2.86 bar - i.e. he had approx 24 SECONDS of air left. Another firefighter got into distress whilst rescuing a family from the 12th Floor. Fortunately, he was discovered by another crew who helped him to safety. Finally, at least 20x firefighters are recorded as going into the fire 2 or more times despite knowing the danger to their own lives (some BA entries didn't have a name recorded so this number could be higher). What LFB firefighters did on that night was nothing short of heroic! May the 72 people who died rest in peace.

These podcasts are always great, but this one was exceptional. To understand first hand what went down on that day, from someone who was there, makes it all the more terrifying. Ricky and the others that went into Grenfell on that day are all heroes. Thank you for everything you did and I’m sorry for the personal pain and turmoil you had to endure after it

The doctor (now left) at my school was the first paramedic on scene at Grenfell. She left the ambulance service shortly afterwards and joined my school. You can only imagine what she went through. Loved the episode ❤

Prior to going into the Army, I joined my village's volunteer fire dept. as a cadet at age 14. I can tell you when you're crawling on your hands & knees with SCBA on your back, dragging a hose with you, depending on the fire a lot of times you can't see your hand in front of your face, let alone someone's race/skin color. You literally feel your way around typically along the walls as you sweep an area. I stayed up all night watching coverage of Grenfell from here in the states. This guy and his buddies are heroes.

The cat in the tree bit, set off a memory. 1976, when the firies went on strike and our servicemen filled in. I think it was Oldham and they got a shout for an old lady’s cat stuck up a tree; they weren’t busy, so responded. They duly rescued the mog and the grateful lady gave them tea and bickies. Unfortunately, when they drove off………… 🤣😂.

What a great hero, such a shame about the PTSD, which is a natural reaction to un-natural circumstances. So glad you got the help you needed. Therapy is the verbal equivalent of surgery. Going up to the 15th floor is not backing down..
