    A lot Grenadian slangs have a French origin because Grenada was once a French colony. Like Fete or Bonjay

  • @Jeuieb
    @Jeuieb4 жыл бұрын

    Bonjay is stems from creole grenadian language which derives from French Bon Dieu which means Good God. The expression Bonjay translates to American OMG

    What about "yea u take me fa a papootan?" or "u take me fa a stupidy?" - meaning- so you think I'm stupid? "Gal whey u dey?" - Girl where are you? "Ah liming" - hanging out on the block. "how ah yu?" - answer: "ah dey" - meaning: how you doing? I'm good. "Yu basodee or wha?" - not acting with sound judgement. "Mine yu business, yu too fasst" - Stop sticking your nose in other people's affairs. "Yu jooking dem people for tebay" - you want a quarrel with someone. "Yu mouth running" - You can't keep a secret. "Yea come an juke me mouth" - You daring someone to come touch you 1st in a quarrel that would lead to a fight. "Boi go hold-ah-fresh" - Boy go take a bath. "Moove dey" - Go away! "Doh jumby me" - Let's say like someone promise to bring something to you and you get the notion that, the person would not really keep that promise....... from a Grenz in NY.

    Sticking as I know it means wasting time or procrastinating. So if somebody had to check you 20 minutes again and they are taking long you call them and ask them why are they sticking. I never heard it used to mean if you're going to be remaining in a place.

  • @caribbeanman3379

    1:12 Wha' do you = What do you? ~ What's wrong with you? / What's your problem? Might be said to a friend if he/she is acting foolish in an irritating way. 3:27 Bunjjj = Bon Jay = Bon Dieu = "Good God!" ~ Oh my God! An exclamation of surprise or awe. Patois in origin. 5:09 I've read that 12 comes from the police code "10-12" which is used on radio to tell cops that visitors are on the scene they're going to. I guess people learned of the code and decided to use it back at the police by using it to warn each other that cops are in the area; and they just shortened it to 12. 5:36 Bacchanal = wild party; a domestic disturbance that gets the attention of the whole neighborhood. lol. Basically any noisy commotion that attracts onlookers, but it can also be used hyperbolically to mean controversy. 11:07 You bugger = literally means "you pederast!" / "you sodomite!" but it's not typically used with that original meaning in mind. It's equivalent to saying "you scamp!" or "you son of a b!tch!". But I've heard persons just say it as an exclamation the same way someone might just exclaim "damn!" or "sh!t!"

    Excuse me, as a Triniof Greenz parents, please learn your history. Let me relieve you of your ignorance. The Cedula of population allowed Trinidad to be populated by the other Catholic neighboring islands i.e. Grenada and St. Vincent… So many of the free blacks, whites and mixed race people and their slaves mainly from Grenada populated the island and continued to do so until the1970s and to a lesser extent even today. So many of the estates in the West from Diego Martin to POS were owned by Grenadian people. Even Gros Jean the slave credited for being the originator of calypso was Grenadian, as was Eric Williams’ dad, The Mighty Sparrow, Buzz Butler etc. Areas like Diego Martin, Paramin, Maraval, St. Ann’s, La Brea, Moruga and Point Fortin, Marabella, Sangre Grande are full of Grenadians and their descendants. Trust me if anything Grenadian slang infiltrated Trini slangs and in some cases it’s the opposite. Know your history Sir…
