    You guys got a little confused. Water made new ones appear immediately. It was the food after midnight that caused them to go into a cocoon and turn into gremlins. Since it was a gremlin that jumped into the pool, he produced a lot of new gremlins is a short amount of time.

    11:15 - 11:24 The original script was suppose to be MUCH darker. Initially, Billy's Mom was decapitated by the Gremlins, Barney (the dog) was going to be eaten by them, and Gizmo would turn evil and become Stripe. Thank god they didn't go ahead with those changes as it would've been an entirely different movie....😱

  • @mikhar

    Having Gizmo stay as is was a great decision. It enhances his uniqueness: this cute cuddly singing ball of fur can reproduce infinitely with some water, but maybe one in a million turns out like Gizmo? Even rarer? All the others are evil monsters.

    I think people have lost the meaning of a cult classic. This isn't a cult classic. It's just a straight classic. A Cult classic is an obscure movie or one that didn't initially do well but has developed a loyal fanbase. I love watching people react to old movies and I constantly hear them refer to a movie as a cult classic even if it was a super famous blockbuster when it came out.

These Bug's Bunny cartoons came out during WW2. That's why Gremlins is mentioned during WW2. Another thing is the script was more of a horror movie. It was never intended to be a family movie. The mothers head gets chopped off , many town folk die etc.

    I have to tell everyone that Mushroom (the dog) thought Gizmo was a real, living animal because of its animatronics, so he took a liking to Gizmo and wouldn’t leave his side. That becomes cute when you see the dog lying next to Gizmo in the scene when Billy shows his father the new ones after they multiplied.

    When I first saw this as a little kidI was fascinated by Gizmo and the Gremlins and had fun seeing them get crazy. I guess getting introduced to fantasy and sci-fi at an early age will do that to you. But I also took it as a caution tale because I thought they were real too.

    Notice the mom and Gizmo are taken out of most of the movie? That's because the mom was supposed to die around that kitchen part. And Gizmo was supposed to be the real villain. But they felt Gizmo was too cute so they tried to find another use for him. This and TEMPLE OF DOOM were the two main movies that started the discussion of a PG-13 rating. And I think the first PG-13 movie was RED DAWN later that year.

    People tend to forget that the PG rating for movies meant "Parental Guidance Suggested". But, because too many parents just dumped their kids off at the mall, or the movie theater, the MPAA came up with PG-13 and NC-17. As for "Gremlins 2", personally I didn't care for it. For one thing, they took the girl's story about Christmas, and turned it into a joke. It's like the studio decided they needed a sequel, but didn't have a viable story. "But, let's do it anyway."

    Back then, parents like mine didn't look at or care about movie ratings, like PG or R. Cable boxes didn't even have parental controls. My parents would actually take us kids to R-rated movies that they wanted to watch. So to me, as a young child, this movie was just pure fun and is nastlagic on rewatches today. Plus, these parental ratings are like, "Do as I say, not as I do," hypocritical. Like, why are parents watching stuff that they don't think their kids should be watching? If you really think something is so bad, maybe you shouldn't be watching it either.

    Nice reaction - the ppl we like or dislike here are mostly showing good and bad qualities of kids, and Gizmo and the Gremlins amplify this several degrees, and show the chaos that would ensue in society if this tendency were let loose - but one thing that's really clever is how they're able to make us identify w the Gremlins even at their worst - they're our own Id, and they're often doing things that we ourselves want to see happen, esp their treatment of the characters we dislike (Monkey Shines is a movie that explores this)

    What's interesting is I remember a time maybe around the mid 90's to early 2000's there was talk about kids being desensitized to violence because a lot of us grew up on movies like these, but it looks like things shifted because the new generation is honestly a bunch of wussies, look at all the reactions to movies we grew up on and they are always so shocked. Movies like this didn't traumatize us, sure there were a handful that couldn't take it, but the majority of us were just fine, I watched everything from G to R, I watched RoboCop when I was in kindergarten for example and I'm perfectly fine no mental issues whatsoever because even back then I knew the difference between reality and fantasy, they were stories I enjoyed watching even if I didn't totally understand what was going on I knew enough to not take it too seriously.

    Yeah, many PG films in the 70s and early 80s were more for adults than for kids. The movie Tourist Trap (1979) is one of the creepiest films ever and it's rated PG. Hardly any film gets rated G anymore. I think because kids films are all PG now, it creates that misconception of the rating with films in the past.

  • @thorguff

    @thorguff

    PG was still for kids. If it had cute creatures, it was marketed to kids no matter what happened. There wasn't so much the sense of "kids movies" and "adult movies." The knock-offs like "Ghoulies" or whatever were what got more pigeon-holed into the horror category. Spielberg's clout and production sense was what really turned this into a mainstream studio film.

  • @Justin0807

    @Justin0807

    @@thorguff No, I'm saying that there were many PG rated movies that came out in that time were for adults, not kids based on the genre and content. Tourist Trap, rated PG, was definitely not a kids movie. The China Syndrome, rated PG, was definitely for adults. Some movies could be enjoyed by both, obviously, but the rating of movies in the 70s and early 80s had nothing to do with a movie being for kids or adults.

    The style of Director Joe Dante was more influenced by cartoons than it was by film. So I kind of laughed when you said that gong at the beginning was cheesy and I thought, 'They don't know Joe Dante very well.' A film of his I always enjoyed more than this, which has only had two reactors react to it on the whole of KZread, is Innerspace (1987). A film that flopped because it was badly marketed, not because it was a bad film. It stars Martin Short, Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. From the writer of The Lost Boys and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and exec produced by Steven Spielberg (just like this film). Do I need to plug it further? Okay, Ashleigh Burton's reaction to it brought in 69k views. Her reaction to Avengers: Endgame only brought in 45k views, over a longer period. You do the math.

Its a horror-comedy movie that wasnt graphic enough to constitute an R-rating released in a time when PG-13 did not exist as you said so it simply fell into PG. And infact PG-13 was created as a response to this movie alongside The Temple of Doom.
