lp.constantcontactpages.com/s... Music Legend Gregg Allman died at 69
When it came to the Allman Brothers band - he played on everything. They were the quintessential Southern-Rock band even though Gregg disliked that tag.
His management confirmed his death today saying, Allman "passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia, Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times."
He was born Gregory LeNoir Allman on December 8, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was always the main vocalist and composer.
For many years this group had the The Three Musketeers motto, “All for one and one for all.” They lived together, played and traveled together and partied together which certainly helped at the groups inception in 1969 when they were starving, malnourished and looking for their audience. They still stayed up all night raising hell. When they weren't practicing it was party time.
Duane's vision was to have a “different” band with two lead guitarists and two drummers. They even toyed with calling themselves Beelzebub.
Those first two Allman Brothers Band LP's, the self-titled debut from 1969 and 1970's “Idlewild South” were not big hits at first even though there classic tunes on both. The first had "Whipping Post" which Rolling Stone magazine called an "enduring anthem ... rife with tormented blues-ballad imagery" and it also contained Muddy Waters classic "Trouble No More.” “Idlewild South” had “Midnight Rider” which Gregg Allman called, "the song I’m most proud of in my career.” It also featured a future concert mainstay, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" a jazz flavored groovy instrumental.
These architects of southern rock found their commercial footing however on their third. A little light bulb went off for Gregg Allman when he realized that without commercial success the band could still survive as a concert act and their drummers were a huge part on that sound. After all the crowds were building so maybe it was time for a live album?
In July 1971 they released, “At Fillmore East.” It's considered one of the best live albums of all time and it was a hit on the charts peaking at #13 on the charts. Everything changed after that.
With increased popularity came the usual rock n roll carnage, drugs and booze. Duane Allman, bassist Berry Oakley and a few of their roadies went into rehab.
The bands biggest blow came on October 29, 1971. At 24, Duane Allman, was killed in a motorcycle accident. On deciding the future of the band Trucks said, "We all had this thing in us and Duane put it there. He was the teacher and he gave something to us-his disciples-that we had to play out."
“Eat a Peach” did feature Duane and was dedicated to him and reached #5 on the Billboard charts. It feature the gorgeous tune, “Melissa” that was originally thought to be too soft for the group. Gregg wrote it in 1967 and would later play it at Duane's funeral. Then bassist Berry Oakley was killed in another motorcycle accident a few blocks from where Duane died. They are buried side-by-side.
Interestingly they called their next project “Brothers and Sisters” even though the family atmosphere in the band was fading fast via drugs and arguments. It did feature, "Ramblin' Man their only top 10 hits it was their only #1 album. MORE AT www.johnbeaudin.com

His autobiography book is an excellent read !! I enjoyed his honesty, sense of humor, and most of all the stories behind the songs he wrote, along with his personal struggles from childhood into adulthood. I feel that everyone who is an Allman Brothers Band fanatic like myself is deeply blessed to have the honor of listening to the BEST MUSIC EVER !! Gregg I know you're with your brother Duane at last and it feels good to know the long await has come to pass.

I still can't wrap my mind around this. The ABB was always my favorite band growing up, and from the first time I ever heard Midnight Rider I have called it my theme song. I saw the ABB in concert in Washington, DC, in the early 1970's, (after an eight hour drive to get there, see the concert, then back another eight hours in time to go to work.) In the 1990's, I saw Gregg and ABB live in Poughkeepsie, NY, and in the city, too. Because of my love for this band, these folks have been as much a part of me as family. I once owned a place I called "Brothers and Sisters Farm," and me and some friends once went to Georgia just to visit Statesboro. I even learned to play slide because of this band. Each loss along the way has been difficult, but this one is particularly hard, not only because it is Gregg, not only because it comes on the heels of losing Butch, but because it represents the final curtain for a band like no other. “Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet princes; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. ”

RIP Gregg Allman. Most southerners will tell you that growing up in the 60's and 70's that these guys had a connection with us somehow. The Allman Brothers just seemed like the rest of us; made their way in small southern towns like Daytona, FL and Macon, GA and never drifted far from their roots. If you were in high school in the late 70's or early 80's, you more than likely rode around in your friends Camaro or Mustang and drank beer from a quart bottle and had their 8 track playing.

so glad to hear that he had finished the solo album and had listened to it the night before he passed away. I have them all and will add this one once its available. He and Joe Walsh have been playing private concerts in my head for years , his lyrics spoke a language that i was very comfortable with. At his concerts I felt sourounded by the coolest people on the planet cause they also knew the same secret that I knew. I have really enjoyed checking out all the acoustic covers. on the "tube" and will continue to enjoy his music , his lyrics , his style. My best to his family , friends and fans. I might even get a shroom tattoo , maybe. His passing makes me feel older but his music keeps me young in my mind. "Sensations I can not borrow. Your embraces won't ease my sorrow. I just wokeup from a bad dream......

Space Ghost 53 I don't know about "moronic religious thing" You can hit below bottom. He cried for help, after 11 rehabs. Someone heard him. Then the miracle guy showed up. 19 Yrs ago. I know he didn't share Cher's belief. We should get his book, A Cross To Bare. He hated "Dull" I dislike religion, love Jesus! He was so cool! Read some Red words. He came for Bottom Feeders, like me. The religious killed him for it. Its all about love, mercy. He would be hanging out with Bikers. The bad ones. If you read a few words of say, Psalms, it sounds familiar. Like all the songs you love. Talk to him, you'll see! This is hard, explain Love. It exists. Its not moronic. Jesus doesn't ruin the party. They ran out of wine! Then the host of the wedding gotin trouble for hoarding The Best Wine, that Jesus made. Its all good, until religion shows up. I hear you!! Love, JL

A cursory treatment of a legend. I had heard that the band tried to find a different singer but that no one could get it right save Gregg. An underrated keyboardist and the brother had soul. I can't think of anyone who has more soul except, maybe, James Brown, BB, Chris Robinson; that's a small list.

Five out of six were southerners (Berry Oakley was from Chicago), but the Allman Brothers Band simply played the most sophisticated rock ever. (Tedeschi Trucks Band is as great a band as the ABB, but their best songs are covers of George Harrison, Santana and Derek & the Dominoes.

Gregg and the band resisted the label of Southern Rock and rightly so. They were much more than that. It was not until Duane died and Dickey Betts became more prominent as a song writer that they began to do more country-influenced material. Even then it was not so much Southern as it was an amalgam of several styles. They cut their teeth on blues and went from there. Betts was more country-ish but also appreciated Brahms; Duane loved listening to John Coltrane as well as Taj Mahal; They were musical sponges and it made their improvisations take often diverse paths. Blues, Jazz, old school R&B, and Country, with a touch of Latin for good measure. That was The Allman Brothers Band.

+Dwayne Wladyka Don't forget Lamar Williams, Allen Woody and Dan Toler's brother Frank, who briefly played drums for the band 1980-1982. That's eight members, pretty unusual to say the least. Three bass players in a row: Berry Oakley, Lamar Williams and Allen Woody. I knew the Tolers and played with Dan a few times. He was a great player and one of the sweetest guys you'd ever meet. I didn't know Frank much but did meet him and jammed with both of them once. What a great band, my favorite of all time. RIP to all, especially Gregg right now. There are now only two of the original six members left, Jaimoe and Dickey Betts. Very sad and tragic.

Another gone too soon. May he rest in peace. That heavenly band is growing by leaps and bounds. 💔😞

Its funny that Duane (like most big brothers) would chest Greg around and assert his authority. I think older brothers instinctively know to bully the younger to prepare him for jr high, HS, Col or in their case bar fights on the road. Greg said there were no little bro love moments at all. He marked a good day by escaping an ass whipin. I love that. Life is rough. Never start them out shielded or protected. A lesson the poor take to immediately. We were upper middle but my brothers did me the favor of daily ass whipins and dryer rides. Blood was drawn at least weekly. It took me to the top 10 in the sport of wrestling in Ohio and I am grateful.

For the new lineup. Yes. New Eagles. Didn't like when Randy Meisner quit. But a burn out is what it is. Randy was married so had a lot on his plate. The Eagles know now what it means to have a family. Love to Randy. The best for our New Eagles. Congratulations 🎶

It was a recurrence of the liver cancer he'd had before. Do not know if it was the 'NEW' liver or not...but I was relieved to learn it was NOT an overdose that got him. Apparently he was still clean at the end.

I remember chilling out on the couch with Gregg in 2000 watching Soul Train and bass fishing when we ended up in rehab together. RIP brother.
