Greenwich Village Writers documentary

Greenwich Village historically was known as an important landmark on the map of American bohemian culture in the early and mid-20th century. The neighborhood was known for its colorful, artistic residents and the alternative culture they propagated. Due in part to the progressive attitudes of many of its residents, the Village was a focal point of new movements and ideas, whether political, artistic, or cultural. This tradition as an enclave of avant-garde and alternative culture was established during the 19th century and continued into the 20th century, when small presses, art galleries, and experimental theater thrived.

This all-too-short documentary does provide some interesting info and glimpses into that fascinating place. For example: I never knew that Washington Square Park, where I've sat on benches and, entranced, watched the human circus passing around me, was once both a potter's field and an execution ground. I ❤️ New York. Being there gives one the sensations of being involved in something vast, ineffable, and profound. If you haven't strolled the streets of the Village, go there soon. Thanks, Paul.

The Park is haunted. It's known to all residents. The ghosts are friendly, and really like it when music is played in the Park. When we get up a group sing a long, the crowd feels bigger than it is. Locals report being brushed by someone, and nobody's there. Folks also tell of feeling crowded in the group, but .. Nobody behind you. Just the local ghosts trying to get closer to the music.

Nice documentary punctuated by some outstanding readings. It was a pleasure seeing so much of Galway Kinell; I hope his section gets made into its own GK-titled video. The Abstract Expressionist painters, Pollock, deKooning et al, seem a pretty large omission. In the 80s I made out with a girlfriend in Washington Square Park on a few occasions and almost got shot there once.

Your documentaries are SO GOOD. I love the business model of getting older, out of copyright documentaries and republishing them. Thank you

Wonderful to look back. Sad to see those Twin Towers that stand no longer, against the same shade of perfect blue as on September 11, 2001.

It's spelled Greenwich, but pronounced "Grennich". I 'm a long time resident, and love Arabic music. I'm one of those "oddball artists" you've heard of. American born, Irish family, and yes, I know the work of Umm Kulthum. Please come and visit The Village!

This was made the year I graduated high school and also the first time I ever visited New York City although I did not go to the village until a while later. Louis Auchincloss I like. I've read a handful of his stories. And although I'm from the south and from the working class, his rich New York society narratives were not alienating.

The interviews are irrelevant, making poor this video. It is not a good documentary.
