A Moment in Time: 1960s Greenwich Village - Decades TV Network
A Moment In Time: Greenwich Village in New York was once known as “Sapokanikan,” a hunting ground for the Lenape tribe. In the '60s it became known as the home of American bohemian culture, an island of color and calm where everyone was “young inside.”

I used to flock to the village when I was a young teenager. Hang out with the beatniks and stuff. Then I flew away one day, but I'll never forget those angel-headed hipsters.

Dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix?
The village for decades was a place for artists musicians free spirits. Today most of that is gone we priced out our young creative people. That's kind of sad.

Wonderfully narrated by Jean Shepherd (A Christmas Story) when he was at WOR.
Narrated by Jean Shepherd, who had a nighly radio show on WOR 710 from the mid-1950's through mid 1970's and performed almost every Saturday night at the old Limelight, those shows, were broadcast live. This clip seems to be from a longer film. What was it and where may it be found?

@@georgeplagianos6487 Yes, I believe so; but the time I was in the university nearby and old enough to get in there, he was no longer doing the Saturday night shows, so saw him at the colleges.

Great shots. I enjoyed living there in the seventies and early eighties.
At one minute and 30 seconds that was Jack Kerouac with his wife on the stoop. He was the most famous beatnik of them all.

Now it's full of fruits.
I dig the recorder (wooden flute). And I like Jean Shepherd a lot.
I also remember south Chelsea, home of stick ball and roller hockey!
Beautiful era. I'm sure it "exists" in other places, just like Haight-Ashbury moved to communes and other places. It does make me feel a certain melancholy though, as every Bohemian scene is different

@@luketimber4679 Luke, I know things have changed on Mac St. I only left NYC 3 years ago. After tramping around every crack and standing on every corner from the age of 15, over 50 years ago, you learn. It is a process. NYC was the creative center of the world when I grew up. Now it is a sewer. Watch out now, Take care, Beware.

From this "independent republic" of the 1960's to the 2020's, we all are now subjected to woke. Charming, ain't it. 🤠

Frankly I haven't noticed anyone subjecting me to "woke" whatever that's supposed to be. Who is doing this and where? What specifically is it that's the problem? I still love the Village and most of it was always pretty expensive. Certainly the townhomes were always only for the rich. Th Village has been dominated by the ever expanding NYU, with good and not so good consequences. I don't think NYU does much "woking". They have superior law and business schools.
