Definitely agree with what you saying man. Popping has never been really given too much room to grow. like musically I know I can pull 10 popping battles rn and maybe one track will different. For the longest time aswell people only accepted EB so like decades of poppers weren't encouraged to really develop outside of that. it's why i have such high regard for poppers like Wiggles, Shrimp, Greenteck, Slim, kite etc because they learnt from outside of popping and brought it into their dance bringing something new to popping as a result. Like Green be doing Hip-hop, breaking, locking, tutting, animation, all within EB/G-Style poppin and it works really well. but people still stuck refining what poppin was in the 70-80s

This is true plus you can see the generational gap whereas most of the old heads (with some youngins thrown in) would have absolutely no problem with the track choices because that is what they grew up with, its what they practiced to, and what they have the fondest memories of. Whereas the younger generation the taste has changed. Not many young cats out here really just trynna vibe to funk on the regular. Which is why a lot of them are much more drawn to hip hop because it is a much more modern style of music and dance that is constantly changing and evolving. Plus the sounds vary from song to song, where many funk songs just sound the same to them in hip hop you can have songs with different tempos, rhythms, and overall feel and still be considered hip hop. So its like Metal has pointed out popping for a long time has reached a level of stagnation and its hard to get the younger generation excited about a style of dance that for the most part has remained the same for 30-40 years.

Its definitely rough trying to dance to or watch someone dance to tracks that all sound or feel the same. Part of me wishes there was more of an unspoken understanding within the crowd to give more energy if the music is lacking. Its probably be harder to do for an event like this with so many rounds, but it'd be worth it to keep people from becoming disinterested. I actually wanna attend one of these to see if the feeling is different in-person

I 100% agree with you on the point that music is so important! I don't dance just to dance, I dance because I feel the music and my body wants to move to it. If the music is flat, that's too boring. For the crowd as well, as they are not physically engaged and if there is nothing interesting for the eyes to see or the ears to listen to, people will turn away automatically.

Refreshing change from the norm of what we see in a " battle" for me anyway....the music was flat and for me, it was hard to feel what the dancers were giving....🤔 btw, you are HILARIOUS 🤣❗

Srsly, the music is one of my reasons I don't like popping...and usually the moves are to boring. Megaman helped me a little, names like Mt Pop and Greenteck are my real favourites though that I can actually watch and enjoy (at least way more than usually)

In all honesty what they need to do is have the dj's compete for big events like this, same as the dancers. Like the music fuels everything and if what they are playing is some haphazard lame ass playlist it kills the atmosphere. Especially when you have people with renown who show up to these events, it's kind of a slap in the face to have them exert all of this effort and passion to whack tracks. I'm not saying get rid of old school music all together but save it for the prelims. Afterwards when you get into the Top 32 and below it needs to be nothing else but straight heat. The dancers that are going into battle need a soundtrack that replicates their desire to win.

Regarding music, the thing with Hip Hop events right now is that they're diversifying the music but also keeping some old tracks because they're simply banging. In my honest opinion, what I think made HipHop dance evolve (with big help from the Twins too, but it is correlated to what I'll speak on) is the overall range of the music because most of it now is majorly electronic, and electro (and it's myriad of styles within) offers so many paths to choose from for your dance. You got instrumental tracks that can display melodies and harmonies with different synths, mixed with some Bass that gives a track life and personality, rythm patterns to play with, and last but not least, effects that you count by the hundreds ! What Les Twins introduced to the scene is thanks to that, because I believe that the music played helped the brothers introduce a new way of dancing (with it's pros and cons, you know what I mean of course) that made Hip Hop fresh and exciting for new generations of dancers and appreciators. If every Popping battle could have music like in Back to the Future Battles, the style would draw more eyes.

Mixed styles is the evolution. I agree with you 100. On the real tho, yo, you in La? When the next event your going to? I’m temporary out here looking to attend/ learn

possible wild take. But in a sense the EB guys killed/stagnated the scene. the EBs pretty much codified everything in popping (from videos to classes), majority of Judges and teachers are EB, there's always an EB bias in competition. shit, even the music is EB classics. as a popper you're almost pushed in that direction. and the way people learn/are taught technique is super rigid, there's such an emphasis on how to properly do a technique. I've seen people argue about not doing a proper rotation on a twisto. In contrast, Hip-hop feels so free and loose, there's room for guys that have amazing technique and isolation AND for guys that have a more 'feeling' base.

Not wild at all but truth. I would say that only certain aspects were stagnated though. Plenty of OG poplockers from LA to the Bay and around the country never stayed limited by the rigidity of EB style I do think things are changing now, definitely more now than where things were at in 2002-05 era.
